iPhone Fold: Apple's Folding iPhone Design Revealed In New Leak
Apple is working on a folding iPhone, it's widely believed, which may arrive as soon as next year. A new report asserts the dimensions, revealing an interesting shape for the internal display that matches the proportions of the iPad. I like folding phones but they mostly have an internal display which, because of the thin, tall proportions of the outer display, ends up being almost square. I never feel this works well, with app inappropriately sized and video playback hampered by overly wide black bars outside the images. According to frequent leaker Digital Chat Station, reporting on Weibo, this will be less of an issue on the folding Apple device. The claim is that when unfolded, the display will have a roughly 4:3 aspect ratio, similar to that of the iPad. There are good reasons for this: not only does it sound like a better shape to feast your eyes on, but the software designed for the iPad should fit on this new display. The same leaker has previously specified the dimensions of the folding iPhone, saying there'll be an external 5.5-inch screen and an internal 7.8-inch one. For reference, that's very nearly as big as the first iPad mini, which had a 7.9-inch display. (The latest iPad mini has stretched these measurements to an 8.3-inch screen.) The authoritative analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo from TFI Securities, has also indicated these are the dimensions. Kuo also said the iPhone Fold, as it likely won't be called, will address the biggest bugbear for folders: a too-visible crease in the internal display when it's opened. Kuo described it as 'crease-free'. Less welcome is the predicted price, which Kuo says could fall between $2,000 and $2,500. Folding phones are technologically advanced and complicated, regularly the most expensive in a manufacturer's range, but this is an eye-watering price. Though hardly far-fetched. As it's not expected to go on sale for more than a year, there's plenty of time for more details to leak (though sadly not much likelihood of a big price cut between now and then).
