Was this Pokemon-shaped Cheeto worth $87,000?
'Cheetozard's' new owner may have had cash to burn Charizard used 'Pay Day!' It's super effective! On March 2, a Cheeto shaped like the popular Pokemon sold at auction for $87,840 US (about $126,000 Cdn). Goldin Auctions, an auction house in Runnemede, New Jersey, that specializes in 'trading cards, collectibles and memorabilia,' sold the strange snack in an online auction. The listing described the item as 'a 3-inch [7.6 centimetre] long Flamin' Hot Cheeto in the shape of the Pokemon Charizard,' and said it was 'discovered and preserved sometime between 2018-2022.' A Cheeto is the brand name for a cheesy corn puff snack made by PepsiCo. They come in a variety of flavours, one of which is the spicy Flamin' Hot. Charizard is an orange, dragon-like Pokemon from the popular Japanese media franchise of the same name. As one of the original Pokemon, it has become one of the series' most popular characters. Can you see a resemblance between Cheetozard and Charizard in this scene from the Pokemon anime series? (Image Credit: Pokemon/YouTube) Charizard's type (an element a Pokemon is aligned with) is fire, so it's fitting that its snack doppelganger is a Flamin' Hot Cheeto. So who paid all that money for a funny-looking snack? Well, we don't know, as the auction was anonymous, but it's not the first time people have paid a lot of money for something unusual. In 2024, an art piece called Comedian, which consisted of a banana duct-taped to a wall, sold for $6.2 million US. Goldin Auctions is now auctioning another oddly shaped Cheeto. This one resembles the Air Jordan 'Jumpman' logo. (Image Credit: Goldin Auctions) And in 2023, what were thought to be the world's oldest jeans sold at auction for $114,000 US. Goldin Auctions has even put another oddly shaped Cheeto up for sale — this one resembling the "Jumpman" logo of Nike's Air Jordan shoe brand. So, the next time you're snacking on some corn puffs, make sure to pay close attention before you toss them in your mouth — you might just be holding a very expensive auction item! Cheeto shaped like Michael Jordan being auctioned after Charizard-shaped Cheeto sold for $87,840
A Flamin' Hot Cheeto bearing a resemblance to Michael Jordan's Jumpman logo is currently up for sale at Goldin Auctions. Earlier this month, the same auction house sold a Flamin' Hot Cheeto shaped like popular Pokémon character Charizard for $87,840 after it was widely shared on social media last year. Advertisement The Jumpman Cheeto is three inches long and inside a small diorama of the 1985 Nike photo that launched the logo and encased in plastic. On the back, it lists Jordan's vital stats and career highlights through his rookie season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984. The auction opened Wednesday and after two bids, the price is at $336. According to Goldin, the 'Cheetozard' was first found and preserved between 2018 and 2022. It was posted on Instagram last April by Paul Bartlett, owner of a sports memorabilia and trading card shop in Georgia and drew more than 500,000 likes. Bartlett told the New York Times that he purchased the Cheeto on eBay in 2019 for $350. There are currently a variety of other Cheetos bearing a supposed resemblance to everything from the Loch Ness Monster to Neil Armstrong listed on the platform. Bidding on the Jumpman Cheeto ends on March 29. The Athletic maintains full editorial independence in all our coverage. When you click or make purchases through our links, we may earn a commission.

A Cheeto Shaped Like the Pokemon Charizard Sells for Nearly $90,000
Jordan Tkacsik was perusing his friend Paul Bartlett's sports memorabilia and trading card shop last year when he noticed something unusual in a section full of Pokémon collectibles. It was a Cheetos cheese puff, but not just any Cheeto. Rather, it was a Flamin' Hot Cheeto that bore an uncanny resemblance to Charizard, an orange dragon-like creature that is one of the Pokémon universe's original and most beloved characters. The Cheeto itself was housed in a small plastic container — 'It sort of looked like a travel-size Q-Tip case,' Mr. Tkacsik said — and the three-inch cheesy treat even had a name: Cheetozard. Mr. Tkacsik was not exactly a Pokémon aficionado, but he knew it was an unusual item. He could also sense that it was important to Mr. Bartlett, the owner of 1st and Goal Collectibles in Canton, Ga. So Mr. Tkacsik offered to design and build an improved case for Cheetozard. 'I sort of made it my mission to see if I could do it,' he said. Still, Mr. Tkacsik had no way of knowing that Cheetozard was bound for global celebrity. On Sunday, the dragon-shaped snack sold at auction for $72,000 (plus fees that pushed the price to nearly $90,000) amid a bidding frenzy. Goldin Auctions, which sold the Cheeto, declined to disclose the buyer's and seller's identities, citing client confidentiality. But at a time when a banana taped to a wall can fetch $6.2 million, a Pokémon-themed Cheeto selling for a mere five figures might be considered a bargain.
