Scientists develop new tool to predict dust storms

Scientists in China have introduced a new technology called iDust, designed to improve predictions of dust storms in desert areas. According to scientists, these dust storms can block sunlight and cover solar panels, making them less effective. The iDust tool was created by researchers at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It offers a faster and more accurate way to forecast dust storms compared to older systems. 'Dust storms not only block sunlight but also accumulate on solar panels, reducing their power output,' said Chen Xi, a scientist involved in a study published in the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems. This system is important for countries with large solar energy farms in dry and sandy regions. When dust storms are predicted correctly, it helps reduce delays and financial losses. Compared to the current model used in Europe, iDust produces forecasts with better detail and needs less time—generating 10-day dust forecasts in only six hours after collecting data. The iDust tool works by including dust movements directly in the weather simulation, allowing for more accurate predictions while only using a little more computer power than usual weather systems.

Rogue Aluminum Trader Gets Life in Jail After $1 Billion Fraud

A Chinese aluminum trader involved in a metal inventory scam that caused more than $1 billion in losses has been sentenced to life in prison by a court in the eastern province of Zhejiang. Chen Xi, who controlled several trading houses and warehousing firms, was detained in June 2022 over his role in a high-profile over-pledging scheme, after lenders found metal they had financed did not exist. The court ruling, seen by Bloomberg, named him as the mastermind, and also ordered personal property to be confiscated by the government.

Fancy controlling Mac with Android? Oppo's upcoming foldable could let you do that

Oppo's upcoming foldable is already all over the internet for its razor sharp looks and dimensions that should let it grab the title for the 'world's thinnest' book style foldable. Besides the ergonomics, Oppo is making some iterative changes to the foldable, including a bigger inner screen, bigger battery, the latest-gen chipset, and the addition of wireless charging. Ahead of the launch in the coming weeks, Oppo is teasing new functionality that will folks control their Mac with the Oppo Find N5. Chen Xi, the director of design in Oppo's ColorOS team, posted a glimpse of the feature in action on Chinese social media Weibo. The media shows the Oppo Find N5 folded in half, with its top part duplicating the screen from a macOS machine while the bottom half shows a keyboard. The feature, Xi notes, is an extension of the 'O+ interconnection' (based on automatic translation) features. The executive is supposedly referring to O+ Connect, an iOS app currently allows sharing files with Oppo and OnePlus phones with speeds comparable to AirDrop. With this additional utility, you could not only mirror a Mac's screen to the Oppo Find N5 but also control the computer remotely. We can expect certain limitations, such as both the foldable and your Mac being connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It remains to be seen if the feature is restricted to Oppo's home country, China, or also made available in other regions. If the latter happens, it should also be accessible on the OnePlus Open 2, which is destined to be a rebranded Oppo Find N5 and essentially run the same software. We also hope Oppo and OnePlus extend this functionality to older phones — at least the flagships. We expect to learn more once Oppo formally announces the phone on February 20th in Singapore. OnePlus' launch should follow in a few days or weeks, though the two devices are unlikely to sell simultaneously in the same regions. Oppo has already begun teasing the foldable's design and confirmed some of its specifications. The foldable will accompany the Oppo Watch X3, which will also be rebranded as the OnePlus Watch 3 for different markets.

DeepSeek's global success received by Chinese with pride and glee

BEIJING, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Chinese bloggers, state media and local citizens have welcomed DeepSeek's global success with pride and glee, with some saying the homegrown AI startup's meteoric rise is a sign China is beating back Washington's attempts to contain the country's tech industry. DeepSeek last week launched a free AI assistant that it says uses less data at a fraction of the cost of incumbent services. By Monday, it had overtaken U.S. rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple's App Store, triggering a global selloff in tech shares. The Chinese company's apparent ability to match OpenAI's capabilities at a much lower cost has posed questions over the sustainability of the business models and profit margins of U.S. AI giants such as Nvidia (NVDA.O), opens new tab and Microsoft (MSFT.O), opens new tab. In China, it has raised hopes that the country can successfully resist Washington's export controls targeting access to cutting-edge semiconductors. "This also symbolises U.S. containment, persecution, and sanctions against China in the field of advanced technology has completely failed," military affairs commentator Chen Xi wrote on his WeChat account on Wednesday. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that DeepSeek's technology should act as a spur for American companies and it was good that Chinese firms had come up with a cheaper, faster method of artificial intelligence. The provincial government's media office in Zhejiang, where DeepSeek is based, published a lengthy essay on Wednesday that quickly went viral and was read more than 100,000 times. "The moon overseas is not actually more round, whatever others can do, we can also do it and even do it better," the essay said, while criticising online voices that were both overly triumphant and overly pessimistic about China's technological development. "We need to leave the narrow prism of triumphalism," the department argued. Still, the sentiment around DeepSeek echoes public reaction to Huawei's 2023 surprise release of its high-end Mate 60 Pro smartphone during a visit by then U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, who led the Biden Administration's efforts to restrict Chinese access to high-end AI chips. At the time, the state-backed Global Times said that Huawei's ability to produce a high-end smartphone despite years of targeted U.S. sanctions showed Washington had failed in its "extreme crackdown" on China. Chen Jianuo, a 38-year-old employee at a sustainable development magazine in Beijing, said she felt proud of DeepSeek's popularity overseas after noticing it was a trending topic on Chinese social media platform Weibo. "China has made great progress in the development of artificial intelligence, and I hope that the technological development of our country will get better and better," she said. Leo Li, a 24-year-old student, said that he was happy a Chinese company could be on a par with the likes of Meta and OpenAI and that he would consider using DeepSeek's AI tools. "I feel quite proud of it, because as a Chinese citizen, we have this (AI) research and development that has become a global sensation," he said.
