Wei Chong-Kai Wun, Pearly-Thinaah off to winning start in Singapore
KUALA LUMPUR: Fresh off their Malaysia Masters triumph last week, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun began their quest for back-to-back titles in style at the Singapore Open today.
The world No. 7 pair made light work of Taiwan's Chen Zhi Ray-Lin Yu Chieh, cruising to a 21-18, 21-19 win in just 36 minutes.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun, who also lifted the Indonesia Masters title in January, are now bidding for their third title of the season.
They will take on China's world No. 24 Liu Yang-Huang Di for a place in the quarter-finals.
In women's doubles, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah also enjoyed a smooth start, easing past Hong Kong's Lui Lok Lok-Tsang Hiu Yan 21-16, 21-18 to reach the second round.
Interestingly, it was the world No. 4 pair's first-ever win at the Singapore Open since their debut in 2023.
They will be eager to build on their encouraging semi-final showing at the Malaysia Masters last week.
However, a tough challenge awaits in the form of Japan's world No. 12 Yuki Fukushima-Mayu Matsumoto next.
Pearly-Thinaah hold a slight edge in the rivalry, having won their last two meetings — at the Indonesia Masters and India Open — to lead the head-to-head 2-1.
