Did You Suspect The Rookie's April Fool's Day Episode Was One Big Prank?

The following contains spoilers from the April 1 episode of ABC's . I wouldn't put anything past The Rookie's showrunner, Alexi Hawley, who in his years and years of writing and producing TV has frequently found new ways to have fun with the audience. More from TVLine American Idol Eliminates Half of Season 23 in Hollywood Week - Did Your Favorites Survive the Arena? Ryan Guzman Wants Eddie's 9-1-1 Mustache Back - Together, We Can Make His Dream a Reality Doctor Odyssey Revives TVLine's Fever Dream Theory With Fresh Clues in Episode 12 So as The Rookie's April 1 episode, which was set on April Fool's Day, unspooled and unspooled and got crazier and crazier, a part of me began to suspect that the final image would be Hawley, on-camera, saying, 'Gotcha!' — affirming that the preceding hour was his own version of fan fiction. After all, from go, the reddest of red meat was served to #Chenford 'shippers, as Lucy arrived at Tim's to suggest they prank the department with not-so-subtle hints that they are back together. Which they totally are not. Even though… Lucy also suggested that, being April Fool's Day, 'nothing counts' and they can hook up some more, without strings. And sure enough, once at the station, a grazed hand here and a furtive look there got Celina, for one, suspecting that Chen and Bradford were very much back on. You also had Nolan unexpectedly being assigned a new rookie, Connor (played by David Gridley), who seemingly put in an impressive 11 months with a well-regarded Sergeant McAdams. John cried foul straight away, refusing to be pranked, but Connor's story held up. Well, save for the part about him being any good. After John witnessed the genial lad flounder and flub, he reached out to the former TO and learned that McAdams unloaded the kid just before his retirement, lest he go out on a bad note. Elsewhere, you had an increasingly frustrated Tim dealing with the LAPD's new social media intern (Dog Wihh a Blog's Kayla Maisonet), whose idea of April Fool's jokes 1) flooded the station with people thinking parking tickets were being forgiven, and then 2), much worse, triggered a 'Purge'-like situation by posting that 'all crime is legal' that night. The whole Purge thing is where I thought the episode started to smell funny, especially when the streets grew littered with costumed and masked marauders straight out of Central Casting, and every garbage barrel became a bonfire. #Chenford going at it like rabbits? And a perilous Purge situation flooding the streets with maniacs? It all seemed juuuuuuust a bit too 'out there' for a legit episode of The Rookie. But Mid-Wilshire's finest did their best to keep the rampant crime in check… Nolan's rookie redeemed himself with some smart thinking re: a domestic abuse situation (but nonetheless will finish his 12 months at a quieter precinct)… Angela and Nyla got their guy (an ethically challenged detective) in the 'Ben Dover' case… and Lt. Grey had the last laugh with Lucy and Tim, by feigning a heart attack after chewing them out for an against-the-rule book romance. What did you think of 's April fooling? It's a good thing High Potential has already been renewed, because viewers are going to be fiending for Season 2 by the end of tonight's finale (ABC, 9/8c). In addition to promising a 'satisfying final episode for the audience,' showrunner Todd Harthan teases that the explosive hour 'harkens back to where the characters started this season and shows how far they've come in a short period of time.' 'In this episode, we're going to see the trust that has been built within this newfound family. They're all being tested in a way that they collectively hadn't quite been tested before. There have been some challenging cases that came before, but this one felt like it was a meaningful upgrade.' TVLine has an exclusive first look at the aforementioned case, in which an apparent killer invites the LAPD to play along with his twisted game… or else more people will die. Of course, the season ender has plenty to offer even if you're not a fan of life-or-death stakes. Perhaps we could interest you in a glamorous police gala, complete with fancy dresses and slow dancing? And what would a finale be without an update on the show's season-long mystery? ABC Pauses The Bachelorette, No New Season Airing This Summer

The Bachelorette will not be welcoming new suitors to the mansion this summer. The ABC reality franchise is pausing its female-centric spinoff and won't be airing a Summer 2025 season. New seasons have historically aired in the summer after a Bachelorette has been chosen from the pool of contestants on the most recent season of The Bachelor. More from TVLine The Rookie: Melissa O'Neil Revisits #Chenford Scene She 'Loved,' Teases Drama-Filled Valentine's Episode - Plus a 'Massive Twist' The Rookie's Mekia Cox Says Nyla Has Met Her 'Joker' in Serial Killer Liam: 'He Is Constantly on Her Mind' And Just Like That, General Hospital's Brennan Is No Longer Australian! - Why the Role Was Recast According to our sister site Deadline, which broke the news, The Bachelorette has not been cancelled, and it could possibly return later in 2025. A reason for the skipped summer cycle, however, has not been made clear. The Bachelorette's latest run ended last year with an emotional twist after Jenn Tran decided to give Devin Strader her final rose and, in a Bachelorette first, was the one who proposed to him. (Read full recap.) The pair got engaged, only for fans to learn that Strader later broke things off in a phone call. Tran had to relive the pain of the whole affair during the After the Final Rose live reunion, in what TVLine's Dave Nemetz called an 'exercise in needless cruelty.' The Bachelorette: How Long Each Couple Lasted View List The Bachelor premiered in March 2002 and is currently airing Season 29 episodes — centered on one of Tran's exes, Grant Ellis — on Mondays at 8/7c on ABC. The Bachelorette made its subsequent debut in January 2003, and has aired 21 seasons so far. The dating franchise has inspired other offshoots, including Bachelor Pad, which premiered in August 2010 and eventually evolved into Bachelor in Paradise in 2014; the spinoff has aired nine seasons. Most recently, ABC debuted The Golden Bachelor/Bachelorette, each having aired its freshman run. The Bachelorette's most recent cycle, which aired in July and August 2024, averaged 2.5 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating (in Live+Same Day), matching its Summer 2023 numbers. The Rookie: Melissa O'Neil Revisits #Chenford Scene She ‘Loved,' Teases Drama-Filled Valentine's Episode — Plus a ‘Massive Twist'

'We shouldn't….' Fans of The Rookie's #Chenford pairing have sat with those two little but weighted words for more than one month, ever since TVLine broke the Season 7 trailer that teased a possible re-igniting of the former couple's flame. More from TVLine The Rookie's Mekia Cox Says Nyla Has Met Her 'Joker' in Serial Killer Liam: 'He Is Constantly on Her Mind' And Just Like That, General Hospital's Brennan Is No Longer Australian! - Why the Role Was Recast Doctor Odyssey Plots Shark Attack-Themed Midseason Premiere - Exclusive First Look Fans will get to see that whole scene play out when the light ABC procedural serves up a Valentine's Day-themed episode this Tuesday at 10/9c. TVLine spoke with series star Melissa O'Neil about where the Chen/Bradford relationship has been, where it might go, and more. TVLINE | You and Eric Winter seem to be having an good time this think so…? [Laughs] We have so much fun at work. Of course we're having a good time. TVLINE | Do you enjoy the banter that's been played heavily since the wager scenario?Yessss. Yes. Eric and I are very competitive. Like, we can definitely get into it, and I think that's why a lot of the Chenford banter really shines. Because there's an aspect of our friendship that bubbles up to the surface. It's always really fun. I can see why they wanted to bring it back. Like, we launched into it right at the first episode [of Season 7], and once we got into it…. At first I was like, 'Wait a minute, are we healed enough to be doing all of this?' And once we got into it, it made complete sense. 'Oh, of course. This is so joyful and wonderful, why would we not have this back?' TVLINE | Let's go back to last year's finale for a moment: What was Lucy thinking there in the elevator? She in that moment in the finale is kind of just resting in this impossible, heart-breaking moment. It was really important for me to stand behind him, not only as an actor but also as Lucy, because I really wanted to make sure that it was abundantly clear that she loves him. She loves him. But she cannot show him right now. She's protecting herself, but of course she loves him. She doesn't understand what's going on, but she will abide, if that's what he is asking her to do. And it is. So, yeah. I loved that moment. I think it was a really sweet place to leave off. TVLINE | Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the infamous '' trailer (seen above) that TVLine put out into the world a few weeks ago is from the Valentine's Day episode airing on February 11. What can we expect? You can expect a lot of drama in this episode. I mean, I don't know how the writers do it. They are juggling 11 characters with huge storylines, and everybody has a piece that's happening at the [fundraiser] gala — some that they haven't even teased, that I think people are going to get really excited about, especially with our girl Celina. [Laughs] What I hope they take away from this episode is a lot of the fun, especially around the 'Turn In Your Ex' case. I love seeing Chen and Bradford on a case together; I think they're really good coworkers. TVLINE | They're stationed at a booth out in the public, inviting people to turn in their exes who are possibly committing crimes….Yes. Yes. So we have a crazy turnstile of characters rolling through. One of our writers, who's also a police officer, said that Turn In Your Ex days are always insane. They can be a little bit mundane and boring, and then occasionally, 'What are you trying to say?!' The tiger storyline is ridiculous and absurd and I love it. But yeah, the gala is beautiful. And it's always really fun to see everyone dolled up. TVLINE | [Showrunner] Alexi [Hawley] told me that this season. In the meantime, have you been enjoying the TO arc, where she is learning the ropes? The thing that I really enjoyed about Lucy's training officer arc is that it's so counterintuitive from what I personally would see for her, as a training officer. When I was going through the script, I kept coming up against this inner idea that I have about Lucy, that she would give people the benefit of the doubt, potentially to a fault. And I really appreciated that instead they opted to lean into what I now understand to be her incredible perceptiveness and her capacity as a police officer with regards to her inner instinct, and her nose to sniff out something thats off-center — including somebody [rookie Seth] who is very young and charming and eager and says all the right things, but seems to be shifty in some way. I love that Lucy picks up on it instead of buying it. I think that is a more compelling and interesting story to play, and it also helps us to underline the fact that she is just really good at her job. It seems to me that anything she puts her mind to, she does well which is nice because…. [Pauses to reflect] Man, it's crazy when I reflect on it. It's not something that I identify as a quality of her character, and yet when I take a second to think about it, everything she does she kinda crushes it. Sometimes other elements outside of her pull the rug out from under her, but she's good at what she sets her mind to — including the things she didn't expect. She intends to [be a TO] completely different from Tim, to encourage this young man and set him up for success, and then she's not even halfway through the day and she's like, 'Why do I feel like you're lying to me, Seth?' She immediately picks up on it. It was nice to see that color from her because I think Lucy in the world of The Rookie is one of our eternal optimists. TVLINE | Speaking of Seth (played by Patrick Keleher), he is conspicuously absent from any photos for the Valentine's Day episode. Is he off tending to yet another tragically troubled girlfriend?[Laughs] So many girlfriends….. I'm trying to remember where he was for that…. I think that actually Patrick [Keleher] was in India at the time. TVLINE | Where is that storyline going? Is there a twist ahead? He has a massive twist coming up. I know that they shelled our some of the synopses for the episodes coming up, that feature him going undercover, and it'll be interesting to see how that goes — and why Lucy empowers him to do so, and what the circumstances are. I don't want to tease too much in the way of details, but I can say that the situation that she allows him to enter, the circumstances inside if it, the stakes are super high. The consequences of what come from it for her, for Lucy… the stakes are really high. TVLINE | Lastly, do you have any fun anecdote from your big stunt scene in last year's finale, surfing the truck while against a Volume screen? Alexi was very proud of how that turned out. My parents were there that day! And my family had never really seen me on-set. My Dad, in the 10 years that I've been doing this now — oh my, I'm getting old — he'd never come to set on anything, so it was really fun for him. Especially because we did the whole LED wall thing. It was a treat to show off for my parents, like a 'last day of school' kind of thing, and on a day that was so incredibly technically impressive.I had fun jumping from truck to truck but they're not really moving. For me, what was so amazing was to watch the incredibly skilled technicians do what they're amazing at. I had a blast that day. TVLINE | 'All those theater camp bills paid off!'[Scoffs] No, I grew up poor, what are you talking about? Theater camp?! No, no… My parents are still waiting for me to go on and become a doctor. 'When are you going to get a real job?' I'm like, 'Guys, it's been two decades [since Canadian Idol]. The Rookie Brought Back Rachel Amid #Chenford Split to ‘Stir the Pot' — But Not in ‘Expected' Way, Says EP

ABC's The Rookie pulled off one of the deepest of cuts when in the Jan. 21 episode, Sgt. Tim Bradford's Season 2 love interest, SSW Rachel Hall (played by Sweetbitter's Jasmine Mathews), suddenly re-entered his and Officer Lucy Chen's lives. Rachel was last seen in the Season 2 finale, en route to a dream job in New York, but not before she and Tim (Eric Winter) half-heartedly agreed to give the long distance thing a go. More from TVLine The Bachelor Premiere Recap: Save the Drama for Your Llama - Vote for Grant's Best Match in Our Poll! The Bachelor: How to Watch Season 29 Online The Weekend View Sneak Peek: Co-Hosts Revisit Their Auditions in ABC News Live Offshoot (Exclusive) They… did not. Upon resurfacing at Mid-Wilshire Division in the new season's third episode, Rachel told Tim, 'I'm sorry I didn't keep in touch,' explaining, 'I was just working constantly, and then my company downsized and I was just trying to keep my head above water until I couldn't. And now I'm here.' Rachel, though, apparently has been in touch with Lucy (Melissa O'Neil) here and there, and 10% knew that #Chenford was once a thing. What's more, she was good with that, opining, 'They were a much better match anyway.' Does Rachel truly believe that, and thus will join 'shippers in rooting for a #Chenford reconciliation? Or is she here to make some mayhem? While speaking with showrunner Alexi Hawley about Season 2 of Netflix's The Recruit (arriving this Thursday), TVLine asked about the reason for Rachel's sudden encore. 'Jasmine [Mathews], who plays Rachel, was such a great addition to the show, but she was super busy, so part of the reason that Rachel went away [at the end of Season 2], at least for us, was to try and get ahead of Jasmine being unavailable to us,' Hawley shared. In the years that followed, 'I was always looking for a way to bring her back,' Hawley added. 'With Tim and Lucy broken up, it felt like a good opportunity to do that — but not to do the expected, which is to make it a love triangle. I thought that would ultimately be manipulative to the fans in a way that I don't like to be.' All together now: WHEW! 'But as somebody who ultimately ended up ghosting the two of them [Tim and good friend Lucy], is there more there to find out in later episodes? There is,' Hawley previews. 'So that was really what it was about. It seemed like a good opportunity to stir the pot a bit, but also to get Jasmine back on the show.' What 'more' do you think there is to 'find out' about Rachel's vanishing act? And how might her return 'stir the pot a bit'?
