Hyundai Motor seeks to connect art communities worldwide

Hyundai Motor Group kicked off a new art support program that forges connections among local art events and institutions worldwide, expanding its patronage beyond major galleries to regional art communities. The Korean automotive giant announced Tuesday that it will launch the Hyundai Translocal Series, a long-term initiative to foster sustainable relationships between art communities in local cities. Over the next 10 years, each edition of the project will connect art communities around the world, encouraging them to co-host exhibitions, conduct research, plan art-related programs and jointly commission works from local artists. The first edition will feature a collaboration between the 2025 Cheongju Craft Biennale, Britain's Whitworth Art Gallery and India's National Crafts Museum & Hastkala Academy, based in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province; Manchester, England; and New Delhi, respectively. With their shared appreciation for textile artistry, the participating institutions will present a joint exhibition to be showcased consecutively in Korea, India and England from September 2025 to July 2026. The institutions will also collaborate on research into local arts. Hyundai is preparing for the subsequent edition, which will involve the Nam June Paik Art Center— dedicated to the video artworks of the Korean artist in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province —and the Pinacoteca de Sao Paulo in Brazil, focused on Brazilian art after the 19th century. Having previously supported major galleries worldwide, including Seoul's National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and London's Tate Modern, Hyundai is now highlighting the unique qualities of local arts, aiming to share their values beyond national boundaries. 'Hyundai Translocal Series proposes a collective platform for expanding access to the arts by deepening trans-local collaborations that enable a sustainable arts ecosystem,' said Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun. 'This participatory initiative connects institutions engaged in new artistic practices with multifaceted support, empowering them to collaborate and innovate across diverse creative landscapes.'
