Decades later, remains of 22-year-old WWII soldier from NJ identified
Nearly eight decades after he gave his life for his nation, the partial remains of a New Jersey soldier who had been declared killed in action in 1944 have finally been identified. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency has now accounted for U.S. Army Pvt. Roman Cherubini, a 22-year-old twin and World War II soldier from Bridgeton. Cherubini was serving with the 475th Infantry Regiment in the China-India-Burma Theater when he was killed. 4 Roman Cherubini (left) and his twin brother, Raymond, both fought in WWII. POW/MIA His remains were said to have been buried in at least eight different locations, including the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2022, the DPAA had his remains exhumed and tested. 4 Cherubini's remains were interred in at least eight different locations. POW/MIA Late last year, an identification was made using dental, anthropological and mitochondrial DNA analysis. The DPAA said Cherubini 'fought in a series of running battles against numerically superior Japanese forces in the jungles of Burma in 1944. The light infantry formation, known as Merrill's Marauders, was equivalent to a regular regiment in size and was specialized for jungle fighting behind enemy lines.' 4 Cherubini died fighting in the jungles of Myanmar. The Washington Post via Getty Images Merrill's Marauders entered Burma in February 1944 and 'began assaulting the supply lines of the Japanese 18th Division in the Hukawng and Mogaung valleys.' On May 17, the Marauders seized a strategic airfield near the village of Myitkyina with the help of two Chinese infantry regiments. Japanese forces in Myitkyina were finally routed on Aug. 3 after more than two months of grueling jungle combat. 4 Cherubini's death was covered in local papers. POW/MIA He died June 16, 1944, in the midst of the battle for Myitkyina, but the exact circumstances around his death are unknown. The remains of servicemen killed in that battle were buried in temporary cemeteries as well as isolated burial locations. 'Their mission complete, Merrill's Marauders were disbanded. They had marched 750 miles through the jungle and fought in five major engagements. Over two hundred of the Marauders were killed by disease and enemy action, and many were lost in the back-and-forth battles in harsh jungle terrain,' according to the agency.

Maryland finance expert weighs in after Hong Kong Post suspends shipping of non-airmail packages to U.S.
Hong Kong will stop packages headed to the U.S. after the White House announced it would end the 'de minimis' exemption next month. The exemption allows shipments under $800 to go tax-free. Wednesday, the postal service, Hongkong Post, suspended non-airmail packages. Loyola University Maryland Executive in Residence of Finance Jason Cherubini said items coming from Chinese factories will no longer be shipped through Hongkong Post. "You'll still be able to get it through Hong Kong, just shipped another way," he said. Cherubini said the would come through FedEx, DHL or a private third party carrier. He said items will come quicker but with a higher price tag and gave an example. "A one-pound package would've cost about $16.50 US through the Hongkong Post and take 7-14 days," he said. "To do the FedEx which would take 1 to 2 days, would cost you about $54." Cherubini added items from companies like Shein and Temu could come from U-S distribution centers. "Shein and Temu have set up distribution centers in the United States as well as in other countries." Cherubini called this move a double-edged sword for U.S. consumers. "On the bad end, you're not able to get items as cheaply out of China, out of countries affected by the tariff," Cherubini said. "But it is going to open up competition in the United States." A FedEx spokesperson said in a statement, "We are business as usual between the U.S. and Hong Kong. No interruptions to report." Hong Kong officials wrote in a statement, "The US is unreasonable, bullying and imposing tariffs abusively. Hongkong Post will definitely not collect so-called tariffs on behalf of the US." Hongkong Post will accept air mail packages until April 27. Officials say the postal service will continue to accept mail that only contains documents. "For sending items to the US, the public in Hong Kong should be prepared to pay exorbitant and unreasonable fees due to the US's unreasonable and bullying acts," said Hongkong Post in a statement."

Maryland workers anxious over the stock markets impact on their retirement plans
The stock market rollercoaster is creating uncertainty and anxiety when it comes to people and their money. A Maryland economist advises those with 401 (k) retirement plans and investments to wait this out. "Looking at a lot of the past, when the market retreated 5% plus, in the following year, you have greater than 10%, in some cases 20% returns, so the worst thing you can do now is pull out of fear and miss out on those gains," said Loyola University Finance Professor Jason Cherubini. The stock markets soared 7% on Wednesday after President Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs, but raised the taxes on China. Facing a global market meltdown, the move boosts confidence after economists shared concerns about a recession However, some people are still worried about their future. After the stock market plunged last week, anxiety spiked for those who saw their retirement accounts take a major hit. "I've lost a ton of money, and the uncertainty as I'm nearing retirement makes me realize I may have to work longer," said Baltimore resident Sharon Achinstein. Cherubini says that for young investors seeing a drop in their 401 (k), they still have plenty of time to recover. For those inching closer to retirement, you may need to strategize differently. "It may be worth looking at your balance and potentially shifting to safer securities, things that are not going to have the same volatility," Cherubini said. In a recent CBS News poll, Americans' outlook on the economy is mixed. with 70% of people reporting they're anxious about their retirement savings. "You just don't know, every day you get up, it's just always something," Baltimore resident Arlene Jones said.. Achinstein told WJZ that she's working on a new retirement plan. "I'm really going to have to think when I retire and might have to delay retiring to make up for what I lost," Achinstein said. Cherubini says one thing people can do if they're still not sure what to do is reach out to a financial advisor. According to CBS News , financial experts warn that people should not panic over the stock market declines because it could lead to impulse decisions that could be costly. Rather, financial experts say to key on these important investment questions before taking action. Seven of 10 workers feel that even if they work until retirement age, they still will struggle to survive, according to CBS News, citing a Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies report . "Everyone is navigating difficult waters right now and trying to understand what the effects of market volatility will be on their overall retirement savings," said Catherine Collinson, CEO and president of the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies. "One thing they should be doing, but many aren't, is engaging in the basics."
