Mum spots rarely seen 'Smile in the sky' event grinning over North Wales

A Flintshire mum and her son spotted an astonishing sight while fetching in washing from the garden. Six-year-old Idris Blenkley pointed it out: 'Look mummy, there's a rainbow way up in the sky'. It wasn't a typical rainbow: for a start, it was upside down. It was also accompanied by a stream of wispy cloud as if hurtling through the blue sky. Not entirely sure what it was, Idris' mum Nicky grabbed some photos and posted them to an online weather platform, describing it as as 'rainbow cloud'. It prompted hundreds of remarks and suggestions, many marvelling at the spectacular sight. Some people shares similar images taken the same day, all mournfully noting theirs were nowhere near as good as Nicky's. As she suspected, the consensus was some form of light refraction high up in the clouds. 'I had an idea the arc was the result of light refracting through ice crystals high in the atmosphere,' said Nicky, from Buckley. 'But, sadly, that was as far as my knowledge goes. 'I was quick enough to grab my phone and get pictures. It was the first time I'd seen anything like it and we both thought it was beautiful.' What mum and son saw belonged to the 'ice rainbow' group of phenomena. Specifically, it was believed to be Circumzenithal arc – a type of halo caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. When light hits ice crystals at the right angle, it creates a distinctive upside-down rainbow effect. Commonly, it's called the 'Smile in the sky' – nature's answer to the disappearing Cheshire Cat. The Met Office said the phenomenon is not actually that rare - but it's not often seen. Online, the forecaster said: 'Circumzenithal arcs are actually quite common as Cirrus clouds occur throughout the year. "However we only sometimes see them as they are usually obscured by clouds underneath.' Often, such arcs have only a faint colouration. However the one seen by Nicky and Idris was vivid and obvious. Online, one observer noted: 'Beautiful phenomenon – the colours are supposed to be the purest of any iridescent display.' The Buckley sighting was on the evening of Monday, April 28, around 6pm. Similar reports were made that day across northeast Wales and Cheshire. Like many of nature's most spectacular sights, the 'Smile in the sky' didn't last long - it vanished within a few minutes. 'I was sad as I watched it dissipate away,' recalled Nicky. 'But the experience has encouraged me to look up more!' Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox

Unlocking Alice in Disney Dreamlight Valley: A step-by-step guide

In Disney's Dreamlight Valley, if you've unlocked the door to the Wonderland realm with 15,000 Dreamlight, you will finally be able to begin your quest to unlock Alice. However, there's more magic involved in this quest. Also read: Spaceship Earth lounge at EPCOT: Walt Disney World announces opening date and menu items After getting rid of the Night Thorns, the door with shrink down and a white rabbit will appear out of it. Merlin will tell you to go after it and you'll have to chase it around the valley before falling into a rabbit hole and spawning in Wonderland. You will meet Alice in the new Wonderland realm, but you will be required to complete her quests to invite her to your valley. Alice will tell you to follow her to the Queen of Hearts' garden, but she will disappear while you follow her, and then you'll have to trace her footprints to get to the Cheshire Cat's tree. He will then offer to help you find Alice, but you need to find three cat faces around the realm before he helps you. When you're done collecting all three faces – which isn't as difficult as it sounds – the Cheshire Cat will tell you to gather these ingredients from chests: - 1 x Lemon - 1 x Butter - 1 x Tea Leaves - 1 x Wonderland Salt - 1 x Wonderland Sugar - 1 x more Wonderland Sugar Chests won't appear at random in the Wonderland realm, therefore, you would have to go to the forest and search for bright pink items – such as rocks, logs, and bushes – and interact with them to turn them into chests which will have your ingredients. You won't have to struggle to find these chests, as the items to interact with will be highlighted in pink. Take the ingredients back to the Cheshire Cat and he will tell you to cook a Spicy Moment, a Sweet Moment, and 'More Time' with the help of these ingredients. The Cat will also give you the recipes for each of them. - 1 x Wonderland Salt - 1 x Wonderland sugar - 1 x more wonderland sugar - 1 x tea leaves Ingredients to make a Sweet Moment: - 1 x Butter - 1 x Jam - 1 x Lemon - Combine Spicy Moment, Sweet Moment, and the Wonderous Pocket Watch - Eat the "More Time" meal you've created After all of that, follow Alice's footsteps to find your way around the forest. You will then reach the Queen of Hearts' garden, where you will have to pull four levers around the Queen of Hearts' labyrinth. These will naturally pop up on your path and when you've reached the exit of the labyrinth, you can find Alice – who has somehow shrunk from the last time you saw her. To bring Alice back to her normal size, she would tell you to go back to the Cheshire Cat and craft a bottle of 'Contrary Perfume.' To make the perfume, you will need four ingredients: - A jar of Heart Candies - Discontinued Seeds (which you can get from the matriarch of the singing flowers) - A small blue mushroom (which you can get from the big blue mushroom at the beginning o the realm) - The Wonderland Plaque (which you can get by answering the questions asked by a bird with a pencil for a head that sits on top of a stack of books) After you craft the contrary perfume and bring back Alice to her normal size, she'll ask for your help in freeing some woodland creatures stuck in crates in the garden. Unfortunately, the boxes will be locked and you'll have to find their keys hidden on the table. To find the keys, you will require a lovely dice, lost marbles, and a pack of playing cards. Here's where you can find all of these: - The lovely dice are on the floor by the white rose bushes to the right of the entrance to this area. - The playing cards can be found to the left of the table - The lost marbles are in the back right-hand corner After you interact with these, you will shink down and find the four keys under some objects on the table. Take the keys back to Alice and free the animals, which will then end the Teeny Tiny Problems quest. The mess that the animals made after they were freed have to be cleaned and now you'll have to paint the roses red, clear up any smashed plates, and sort out the burrow holes before you can talk to Alice again. After doing all of this, Alice will tell you to go back to the Cheshire Cat and speak to him about getting some help leaving the realm. The Cat will vaguely explain that you'll need to light the correct colourful mushrooms at the entrance of the realm to spawn the exit door. Since the door is tiny, Alice will give you the contrary perfume to enlarge the door's size, so you can walk out. Also read: Freebies for kids? Here's what Disney is offering at their Florida resort in 2026 When you're back to the valley safely, you can now place Alice's house which will cost you 5,000 Star Coins to build. As soon as you have the 'Welcome Alice' popup on your screen, you can then invite her to your valley.

Set in the Alice in Wonderland realm , this quest is all about helping Alice, who's shrunken, to get back to her usual self. Your job? Help her return to normal with the help of the ever-enigmatic Cheshire Cat . Here's how to do it. Step 1: Talk to the Cheshire Cat Once you meet the shrunken Alice , head straight to the Cheshire Cat. You'll need to gather four unique ingredients to craft it. Teeny, Tiny Problems Quest Guide in Disney Dreamlight Valley Step 2: Collect Ingredients for the Contrary Perfume You'll need four unique items to craft the Contrary Perfume. Each one has its own little puzzle. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New season, new must-haves! Aurelia Shop Now Undo 1. Find the Jar of Hearts Head toward the entrance of the realm. There's a small pond nearby—look closely. You'll need to fish the Jar of Hearts out of the water. It's your first magical ingredient. 2. Help the Singing Flowers Now, locate the singing flowers deep in the forest area. Talk to their matriarch, but she'll need help before offering anything. Water the wilted flowers nearby to revive them. They'll reward you with Discontented Seeds, another key ingredient. 3. Locate the Blue Mushroom Head back toward the entrance and find a blue-colored mushroom next to some rocks. But here's the trick—you'll need to wear something blue to get what you need. Put on any blue clothing item, and the mushroom will drop some magical mini-shrooms for you. 4. Solve the Pencil Bird's Quiz Keep your eyes peeled for a bird with a pencil for a head. He's perched near some books just off the main path. Talk to him and answer his five quiz questions correctly to earn the final piece: the Wonderland Plaque. Step 3: Craft and Use the Contrary Perfume With all four ingredients collected, return to the crafting station at the Realm's entrance. Use them to create the Contrary Perfume. Now, make your way to Alice in the Queen's Maze garden. Hand her the perfume and watch the magic happen—she'll return to full size! But the adventure doesn't end there… How To Get ALL Critters! | Disney Dreamlight Valley Step 4: Shrink Yourself! Alice reveals another mission—saving caged animals. To do that, you'll need to shrink down using the same potion. Climb onto a stack of plates on the tea table, then take a picture and squeeze the perfume's bulb to shrink. Step 5: Find the Board Games To move around the table more easily, look for mini-games scattered around: Playing Cards – Near the tea table. Lovely Dice – Left side of the garden. Lost Marbles – In a small hidden area near the heart gate. Bring them back to the table to build your mini path. Step 6: Locate the Four Cage Keys While shrunken on the table, you'll need to find four hidden keys: Key 1: Inside a pink teacup—fish it out. Key 2 : On top of some dice. Key 3 : In a sugar cube pile. Key 4 : Inside a cupcake—dig it up with your shovel. With all four keys, unlock the cages. The animals go wild (literally), wrapping up the quest and launching you straight into your next adventure. A Queens Bar Becomes a Beacon for Inspired Mexican American Food

There are bodega cats, there are bookstore cats, and then there's Sabrina the restaurant jaguar. Sabrina is the life-size faux (not taxidermied) feline perched atop a tree branch like the Cheshire Cat at the back of Hellbender restaurant in Ridgewood, Queens. She's an apt spirit animal for this protean establishment and its chef, Yara Herrera. Jaguars, in Mayan mythology, have the supernatural ability to go where they like, lords of the underworld who move lithely between light and dark, life and death, and in Sabrina's case, brunch and last call. It's been open only 14 months, but Hellbender has already undergone all sorts of transitions. Ms. Herrera, who trained under Wolfgang Puck and David Chang, and her partners, who co-own the nearby restaurant Rolo's, established Hellbender first as a lighthearted cocktail bar serving Mexican-inspired snacks. The food menu was cursory but compelling — fried Oaxacan cheese sticks and shrimp cocktail with Clamato, to accompany Hennessy piña coladas and Tajín-spiked strawberry margaritas shaken well into the wee hours. When the partners noticed that food was outselling drinks, they expanded the dinner menu to showcase more of Ms. Herrera's modern Mexican American cooking, which she had honed during the pandemic at Xilonen and various pop-ups. Last month, they added weekend brunch, a lure for both families with small children and night owls looking for a hair-of-the-dog michelada. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
