BBC Escape to the Country buyers left speechless after host's mystery house 'challenge'

BBC Escape to the Country buyers left speechless after host's mystery house 'challenge' Escape to the Country host Alistair Appleton was on hand to help married couple Grace and Joe relocate to Cheshire on Wednesday A pair of Escape to the Country house hunters were taken aback when they were shown a "risky" mystery house on Wednesday (May 7). During the recent episode of the BBC show, presenter Alistair Appleton introduced viewers to Grace and Joe, a married duo who had moved from Miami to pursue life amid Cheshire's scenic landscapes. ‌ Grace, originally from Manchester, had spent 25 years in America, but longed to return home. Meanwhile, Joe was eager to plant roots in England's charming countryside after previously living in the UK. ‌ With a generous £800,000 budget, the couple desired a detached property with open-plan living spaces, a spacious kitchen, three or four bedrooms, and a garden suitable for pets. In addition, they insisted on a modern home that was within an hour's distance of Grace's family in Manchester, reports Cheshire Live. Grace and Joe were looking for their dream home in Cheshire on Wednesday (May 7) Article continues below BBC Escape to the Country star sparks frenzy with show update READ MORE: After visiting two homes that ticked their boxes, Alistair decided to "challenge" them with the mystery house. "I'll be frank, this is going to be a risky mystery house because it feels to me that Grace and Joe really want to move their Miami house over into Cheshire, but it sort of misses a trick," he said. "Because what we've got here is an amazing slice of Victorian Cheshire with great period bones, and that's gonna challenge them aesthetically, but I think it could be a really interesting option." ‌ The sizeable Helsby residence was nestled under an ancient Iron Age hill fort, and came with three reception rooms, six bedrooms, and a secure garden. Upon arriving at the detached Victorian house, Alistair confessed to the couple: "I've got butterflies showing you this." The buyers made an unexpected U-turn after seeing the mystery house ‌ "It's haunted... It's a bit of a shock," Joe joked, while Grace expressed her curiosity, stating she was "definitely intrigued" by the property's "grand" appearance. Despite some initial hesitance, the pair were "pleasantly surprised" by the red brick dwelling, realising they had been too narrow in their search. Grace later reflected on the home's interior, saying, "It's got great bones. I mean, the inside was spectacular. Everywhere you looked there was something new that took you by surprise. Article continues below "It wasn't what we had asked for but it really took us by surprise and has definitely got us thinking." Joe added: "I was walking around and thinking, 'This could work'. I'm blown away at the possibility of accepting something like this." Escape to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One

Pregnant woman visited boyfriend in UK jail - and ended up behind bars herself

Liverpool Crown Court heard Katie Carter had previously received an 18-month suspended sentence for two class A drug supply offences while her partner Paul Cordingley was given an immediate jail term A pregnant woman ended up behind bars after visiting her drug-dealing boyfriend in prison. Days before, Katie Carter, of Cheshire, had previously stood in court alongside her partner, but while he was imprisoned, she was spared. However, she squandered this second chance by smuggling cannabis into HMP Altcourse, concealing the drugs within the hollowed-out soles of a pair of trainers she'd brought for him to wear. The court heard their relationship was the "catalyst" for her criminal activities, with the mother to a 17-month-old baby said to have been "acting in his thrall", according to the Liverpool Echo. ‌ ‌ Liverpool Crown Court heard that Carter had previously received an 18-month suspended sentence for two class A drug supply offences on April 4, 2023, while her partner Paul Cordingley was given an immediate jail term at the same hearing. Just over two weeks later, on April 20, Carter visited him at Altcourse prison, bringing with her several items of clothing for him to wear during his sentence, including a pair of Nike React trainers. However, prosecutor Derek Jones explained how prison officers "noticed something amiss" when the shoes were scanned by an X-ray machine. They found that the soles of each shoe had been "hollowed out", and discovered quantities of cannabis resin hidden inside. One was discovered to hold 65.3g of the class B drug, with another 30.8g found in the other, substances worth between £950 and £1,400 on the streets. Carter, from Cranage Avenue in Handforth, claimed she "knew nothing about the presence of the drugs" during her interview with detectives, reports Cheshire Live. Mr Jones added: "She does appear to be in the thrall of Mr Cordingley." Carter's only previous trouble with the law was a case before Chester Crown Court in spring 2023 for being involved in the supply of class A drugs, coincidentally, the sentencing hearing fell on the same day she discovered she was pregnant. Callum Ross, defending, told the court: "She accepts and respects the finding of the jury. She stands by what she said in terms of her explanation. "The crown's case was that she had been persuaded and pressured into her involvement. The jury were sure that she knew what she was doing. There is no suggestion that she benefited financially from this operation. From April 2023 until now, she has stayed out of trouble. That suspended sentence, since then, has had a chance to bite and has been hanging over her head while she has remained out of trouble. "She now has a child. She is the sole carer to him. She has been working diligently with social services to retain custody of her baby and to ensure that her son's needs are met. She does that, albeit with assistance, as a single parent. He would suffer a significant impact if his mother were to be sent to prison. ‌ "There is a very different side to this defendant, a positive, hard working, kind, caring, resourceful woman who tries to give back to society and has done in her years of work. She recognises now, albeit late in the day, the impact that Mr Cordingley has had on her. She has ended that relationship. "She has had support and assistance from a women's refuge. To put it bluntly, she has recognised that, before she met Mr Cordingley, she was a woman of good character. He was, in my submission, the catalyst in removing her good character and causing her offending behaviour. She has cut him out, and that will benefit her in the future. You honour will have read about her mental health difficulties." Carter was found guilty of conveying a prohibited article into a prison following a trial. Appearing in the dock wearing a black blazer over a white top, she held her head back and closed her eyes before nodding as she was jailed for a year. Sentencing, Judge Stuart Driver KC said: "Case law establishes that immediate custody is usually necessary in cases where drugs are smuggled into prison. There are significant mitigating features that make this a sad case. You now have a one-year-old child. Fortunately, you and your child have lived with your parents and they can continue with his care if you are absent. Nevertheless, the court acknowledges the punishment that you would feel if you were separated and that that must have a negative impact on your child. "I note that you were of previous good character before you became involved with Mr Cordingley, and I am satisfied that he is largely responsible for both sets of offences. You performed the community requirements of the suspended sentence order very well. You have your mental health problems and there was a delay of about a year before you were charged with these offences, although the delay since then was largely caused by your denial. "For those reasons, the sentence I am going to pass is significantly lower than it might otherwise have been. Although there is strong personal mitigation, a realistic prospect of rehabilitation and although custody will have a harmful impact on others, I cannot conclude that the sentence can properly be suspended in this case."

Ed Sheeran: Seven people proposed at my concert

Seven people proposed to their partners at one of Ed Sheeran 's concerts, the singer has revealed. Sheeran, 34, admitted that fans proposing to their partners while he's performing his popular love songs, including Perfect and Thinking Out Loud, has become a 'trend'. Asked by Richard E Grant, the actor, whether he had heard of the 'Ed Sheeran effect' on people popping the question, the British singer-songwriter responded: 'There's become a trend at my concerts where, in either Perfect or Thinking Out Loud, you just hear little cheers from around the stadiums and it is people that get engaged.' Grant joked that 'marriage proposals globally have gone up 400 per cent' because of the singer's chart-topping love songs. Sheeran said: 'There was one concert where there was like seven proposals, and in my head on like the sixth and seventh one, I was like, 'Imagine being that bloke, where you've planned it out and then five people propose before, and then it just sort of takes all the wind out of the sails, and you're like might as well do it now.' 'It's definitely become a trend,' he added. Andrew Gunning, from Crewe, proposed to his wife Tanya during an Ed Sheeran concert in Manchester in June 2022 because he is 'her favourite artist'. The 38-year-old, who popped the question while Sheeran played his song Overpass Graffiti, told Cheshire Live after the event that he had been 'bricking it' and that he was 'worried the proposal wasn't good enough for her.'. He said: 'I knew that I'd never be able to get the proper reaction from her during a meal or something. 'I know she hates big crowds and wouldn't like the attention. But we were going to Ed Sheeran on the Sunday after getting back from Majorca on the Friday, so I thought I'd ask her there.' The proposal, filmed by nearby concertgoers, subsequently went viral on social media, with the video being viewed more than four million times on TikTok. 'When Perfect came on, that was it' Ryan McNulty, 37, decided to propose to Nicole Cairns, his girlfriend of five years, while Sheeran performed his song Perfect during the Belfast concert in 2022. He said: 'That song Perfect, that's our song and when that song came on, my sister had the ring and she gave me it and that was it.' Sheeran and Grant discussed the proposal phenomenon during an appearance as guests on Scott Mills's BBC Radio 2 breakfast show to unveil his new song Azizam, which the singer explained means 'my dear' in Farsi. 'It means 'my love' or 'my dear' in Farsi, and the producer I made it with is Persian. It was something I've just never done before and it was exciting and new,' he said. Grant, 67, who is promoting Death Of A Unicorn, a new comedy horror film, also asked Sheeran who he would like to play him in a biopic. The Grammy-winning musician said Rupert Grint, the Harry Potter star and fellow redhead who played him in his music video for Lego House.
