USWNT star Mallory Swanson, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson announce pregnancy
Mallory and Dansby Swanson announced on social media on Wednesday that they are now expecting their first child. (AP/John Amis, File) It turns out that Mallory Swanson had a great reason for missing the start of the Chicago Stars' regular season. Swanson and her husband, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, announced on social media on Wednesday afternoon that they are now expecting their first child. Swanson had been away from the Stars all season due to what they called personal reasons. She last played in a competitive game in November, when the Red Stars were knocked out of the playoffs. Swanson did not play with the United States Women's National Team in the SheBelieves Cup camps last winter, either. She likely will miss the rest of the season. Advertisement The team holds just a 1-1-5 record and sits in 14th in the NWSL standings heading into Saturday's matchup with the Washington Spirit. Swanson shined with the USWNT last year, too. She scored a game-winning goal in the team's gold medal match against Brazil in the Pairs Olympics, which was her 100th match with the national team. Mallory and Dansby have been together since 2017, and they got married in 2022, shortly after his final season with the Atlanta Braves. The two-time All-Star is currently in his third season with the Cubs this summer. He holds a .236 batting average with seven home runs and 20 RBI so far this season. The Cubs sit at 22-16 and lead the NL Central heading into Wednesdays' matchup with the New York Mets.

USWNT forward Mallory Swanson will miss Chicago Stars' first NWSL game, return unclear
U.S. women's national team star Mallory Swanson will not play in the Chicago Stars' season-opening match on Friday against the Orlando Pride. The club has not disclosed more details about the forward's absence since announcing in January that she was sitting out due to personal reasons. The team had said they 'are fully supportive of her decision.' The team's social media posts have also been without Swanson leading up to the 2025 season. Advertisement 'Maybe (the Stars' communications team) can answer more, but to me, it's a week-to-week thing,' coach Lorne Donaldson said on Wednesday. 'And I can just give her space and let whatever happens happen. We can't do much about her situation right now because that's her space right now. 'We just want her to be happy and we are always behind her.' Swanson last played a competitive game on Nov. 8, 2024, starting as Chicago fell in the first round away at Orlando. She was omitted from Emma Hayes' United States squads in the November and December, January and SheBelieves Cup camps along with fellow star forwards Sophia Wilson and Trinity Rodman. While Wilson has since announced that she's pregnant and Rodman is front and center as the Washington Spirit prepare to kick off their season, Swanson's absence has yet to be explained. Playing without Swanson is an immediate setback for Chicago, which will also be without defenders Sam Staab and Natalia Kuikka for this weekend's trip to Orlando due to injuries. In 2024, Swanson was the runaway team leader in combined goals and assists (11), shots, chances created, crosses and touches in both the final third and the opponent's box. 'Top player in the world but the game still goes on and we still have players that we are focusing on,' Donaldson said. 'That just gives an opportunity to for another player to say, 'OK, I can do this.'' The Stars — which rebranded away from their original Red Stars moniker ahead of the 2025 season — played much of 2023 without Swanson after she suffered a torn patellar tendon in April. That year's team finished last in the NWSL standings, albeit under Donaldson's coaching predecessor and a very different roster. As it stands, Chicago will lean on an attacking corps involving Ally Schlegel, Brazil international Ludmila (who will serve the final part of a three-game suspension on Friday), Jenna Bike, Ava Cook, Jameese Joseph, Portugal international Nádia Gomes, Sarah Griffith and rookie Micayla Johnson.

Stars F Mallory Swanson (personal) to miss season opener
March 12 - Mallory Swanson will not play in the Chicago Stars' season opener on Friday as the star forward remains out for personal reasons. Swanson, 26, has not participated in training camp for personal reasons and team will proceed without her for at least the first game of the season, on the road against the Orlando Pride, who won the 2024 title. "I'd like to thank the club and the fans for their understanding during this time," Swanson said in a January statement. "I appreciate the kindness and encouragement from my teammates and all the Stars staff and hope to be back with the team and playing in front of our fans as soon as I can." Swanson scored seven goals with four assists in 25 games for the Stars last season. A member of the United States' women's national team, she scored the lone goal in the gold-medal match against Brazil in the 2024 Olympics and scored four times in the tournament. A key contributor on the winning 2019 World Cup team, she did not play in the 2023 event because of a serious knee injury. In 103 matches with the USWNT since 2016, Swanson has scored 38 goals. In 100 NWSL games with the Washington Spirit (2017-19), Sky Blue FC (2020) and Stars, she has scored 33 goals.
