Arrive Alive Tour shows local students the consequences of impaired driving
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Students in the area are learning the consequences of impaired driving. Police say no one should ever drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Chicopee students got to experience a simulation of what could happen if they do just that. Daily, across the country, more than 30 people die in crashes related to drunk driving. That's one person every 42 minutes. At Chicopee Comprehensive High School, dozens of students got to try a virtual experience showing the consequences of driving distracted or under the influence. Springfield man charged with DUI, wrong-way driving in Enfield 'We have sensors on the gas pedal brakes and steering wheel,' said Arrive Alive Tour event coordinator Jalen Burress. 'They'll feel like a delayed reaction from the steering and brakes because it's trying to simulate drivers that are impaired or distracted and are going to react slower to what's on the road.' By putting on a set of special VR glasses, students got to see what it was like to drive under the influence, feeling distracted and in danger on the roads. Experts say if you feel different, you drive different. Organizers used the opportunity to educate students and bring awareness to the issue. 'It definitely feels like you should never do it, because if you actually get in a car accident you can severely hurt yourself and other people, and you would never want that to happen,' said student Griffin Stefanik. 'I experienced that, I went way over the speed limit and I didn't mean to,' said student Emily Flurry. 'It was hard to control it, like the steering wheel, and still not hit anything and stay on the right side of the road.' Chicopee police and the Arrive Alive Tour plan to speak to more high schoolers on Wednesday and Thursday about the dangers of driving distracted and under the influence. Family of man missing in Connecticut River receive community support as search continues
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The search for a man who went missing last Monday in the Connecticut River in Holyoke continued this Wednesday. Police dogs called in to resume search for missing Daniel Callahan along Connecticut River in Chicopee The search for 27-year-old Nicklas Delisle continued with crews out from 8:30 a.m. to about 4:00 p.m., and as the search continues, the family holds onto hope and are staying strong during this difficult time. Multiple crews continue to search the Connecticut River in hopes of finding Nicklas, who has been missing for ten days. Emotions are running high for the family, as the days go by without any sign of their loved one. 'It's an emotional ride that I'm sure any parent can imagine,' said Omar Adams, Nicklas' stepfather. 'Not knowing is probably also one of the biggest challenges.' Nicklas' stepfather and mother were there, leaning on each other for support, as they say that the day he went missing still feels like a complete shock. 'He was always at the river, fishing almost nightly, daily if he wasn't working,' Adams said. 'And so to get that call suddenly was a shock.' The incident occurred last Monday when Nicklas was out with his girlfriend on the Connecticut River, and their boat capsized. A fisherman saw the couple struggling in the water and went to help, but was only able to save Nicklas' girlfriend, which is when he went missing. Since then, crews have been doing everything they can to locate Nicklas, as well as 26-year-old Daniel Callahan, who also went missing in the Connecticut River back on March 9, and an unidentified individual from Franklin County. Eight boats, drones, and a helicopter have been utilized to scour the river and its surrounding areas. 'We're all here, we want to bring some closure to both the families,' said Jeffrey Anger of the Hampden County Sheriff's Office. 'And what a good effort to get these resolved to the families so they can get some closure. All the agencies are working together to make that come to fruition.' As Nicklas' family waits patiently for answers, they continue to have hope and are grateful for local authorities and the community for being by their side. 'A friend bumped into me yesterday and said, 'Hey, I've been out every other day,'' Adams said. 'So we have no idea how many people have been on the river, you know, from Holyoke down at one point or another. So I just want to say thank you to everybody.' While Nicklas is still yet to be found, his family is holding a memorial at the Chicopee Comprehensive High School auditorium on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. A candlelight vigil will take place at 8:00 p.m. at the school's track.
