Starbucks Japan has a new limited-edition Frappuccino for summer, but does it taste any good?

Do not disturb as our taste buds have checked out for the holidays. Starbucks has been celebrating the upcoming early summer season in Japan with a festival of strawberries covering not just one but two Frappuccinos, as well as a convenience store exclusive and a simple milk-based drink. Now, the chain is diving into its second stage of summer with mango as the star fruit, and the first beverage coming our way is the Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino. ▼ The new drink is designed to whisk us away to the side of a pool at an Asian resort. With the body containing a mix of jasmine tea and soy milk, the bottom of the cup is filled with a generous mound of mango pulp. Finished with whipped cream and a mango sauce topping, the sunny hues really give this a summery vibe, and the taste is incredibly delicious. Thanks to the jasmine tea, it has a refreshing flavour that makes you want to gulp it down and the aroma and richness of the soy milk pairs perfectly well with it, making this an irresistibly good beverage. ▼ The mango pulp is juicy and sweet, with just a hint of sourness that makes you want to keep on drinking it. The second new mango offering, released at the same time as the new Frappuccino on 28 May, is the Chillax Soda Mango. This new addition to the recently released Chillax Soda range combines a mix of soda and mango pulp with a green citrus-flavoured syrup containing aromatic ingredients such as lemon, lime, grapefruit, and mint. Starbucks baristas recommend switching out the soda for black tea or passion fruit tea to enhance the flavours at no extra cost, so we opted for the latter, which turned out to be a very good choice. The tartness of the passion fruit was a great pairing for the sweetness of the mango, making it so easy to drink we gulped it down in no time. Without the fizziness of soda getting in the way, the mango pulp was allowed to shine, giving us a refreshing chaser for the Frappuccino and its rich mound of cream. The ability to play around with customisations gives us more ways to enjoy the delicious new beverages, but they'll only be available until 8 July, with the Oriental Mango & Tea Frappuccino priced from 707 yen (US$4.91) and the Chillax Soda Mango priced from 579 yen. Starbucks Japan launches new Chillax Soda drinks for summer

By Oona McGee, SoraNews24 Starbucks Japan is shaking up summer this year with a new range of effervescent beverages designed to deliver 'relaxation in every sip'. Called Chillax Soda, these drinks contain a base blend of fruit pulp and soda, with a special 'green citrus' syrup containing lemon, lime, grapefruit, pear and herbs for a beverage that's equal parts fizzy, fragrant, and fruity. Crafted around the concept of 'lightening your mood with aromatic soda', there are two flavours to choose from in the first drop — Strawberry and Yuzu Citrus. The Chillax Soda Strawberry contains a sweet-and-tart strawberry pulp sauce and jelly, which contrasts well with the green citrus syrup to create sparkly, fruity refreshment. The Chillax Soda Yuzu Citrus uses yuzu peel, grapefruit and orange to highlight the freshness of the citrus base for a bubbly, zingy hit. ▼ Both beverages are topped with semi-dried lemon slices for extra juicy refreshment. Image: Press release Chillax Soda aims to fill the niche between sugary sodas and plain sparkling water as the summer heats up, and its emphasis is on aroma above sweetness as a key ingredient. This makes it well-suited to a variety of situations, as shown by formal idol member and current Japanese television personality and actress Neru Nagahama, who will be appearing in videos on social media to promote the new range of sodas. The new sodas will be sold in two sizes, Tall, priced at 579 yen for takeout and 590 yen for dine-in, and Grande, priced at 624 yen for takeout and 635 yen for dine-in. The Strawberry variety will be on the menu until May 27, while the Yuzu Citrus will be around a while longer, until September 2. The clear look of the drinks will make you feel refreshed just by looking at them, but if you're looking for a more decadent type of refreshment, you can always opt for the creamy, fruity forget-the-world Frappuccino, which is also on the menu until May 27. Can Starbucks Japan's new Chillax Sodas really help you relax and chill?

Customers in Japan get a new type of limited-edition drink this summer. If you're a Starbucks lover like our reporter K. Masami, chances are you've been trying to keep up with all the new limited-edition releases lately. Just as Masami thought she was up-to-date with all the new drinks, drinkware and sweets at the chain, they threw her a curveball by releasing a new type of beverage she never saw coming: the Chillax Soda. Available in two flavours, Strawberry and Yuzu Citrus, the new drinks are set to be released on 25 April, but as a Starbucks Rewards member, Masami was able to try them ahead of time, with early access for members staring on 23 April. Both drinks have common elements, in that the fizzy carbonated base is blended with a special 'green citrus' syrup which, although transparent, contains the flavours of lemon, lime, grapefruit, pear and herbs. They're also said to focus on aroma over sweetness, with the goal of helping you chill out and relax, which is something Masami doesn't normally relate to fruity fizzy drinks, so she was curious to see how she would feel when trying them. Starting with the Chillax Soda Strawberry, it looked a treat, with strawberry pulp sauce and jelly in the base, and a semi-dried lemon slice on top. The moment she took a sip, her taste buds were greeted by a fizzy sensation, which was an exciting new experience for a Starbucks drink as carbonated beverages like this are rarely produced by the chain. While Starbucks' limited-edition releases are usually on the sweeter side, this one, despite containing a generous amount of fruit, was light on sweetness and incredibly crisp, making it perfect for summer. Masami figured this refreshing flavour profile was helped by the green citrus syrup, making it an essential ingredient to the drink's success. Next up, she tried the Chillax Soda Yuzu Citrus, which blends yuzu peel, grapefruit, orange, and the same green citrus syrup with a soda base. This one, too, was finished with a semi-dried lemon slice. The flavours here were even more refreshing than the first variety, and absolutely delicious. The combination of yuzu with the green citrus was outstanding — it was so invigorating she'll definitely be wanting to drink this again and again as the weather warms up. With the crisp, sparkly blend of citrus, this wasn't exactly a drink Masami would reach for when wanting to chillax at home, but when seeking respite from the heat in an air-conditioned Starbucks during summer, the liquid refreshment would literally help her relax…and chill. With Starbucks planning more flavours for the Chillax Soda series, this is a good introduction to the concept of 'fragrant sodas to lighten your mood'. It's the kind of drink you'll crave between other Starbucks offerings, but these two flavours will only be around for a limited time, with the Strawberry available until May 27 and the Yuzu Citrus until 2 September They can be purchased in Tall (579 yen [US$4.07] for takeout and 590 yen for dine-in), and Grande (624 yen for takeout and 635 yen for dine-in) sizes, with official sales commencing on 25 April.
