Construction of Egypt's Kom Ombo 500-MW solar power plant completed

CAIRO - 29 May 2025: Construction of the 500-megawatt Kom Ombo solar power plant project in Egypt has been completed, Chinese Ambassador to Cairo Liao Liqiang announced Thursday. Kom Ombo solar power plant is the largest solar photovoltaic plant of its kind in Egypt, built by China Energy Construction and marking an important step towards promoting renewable energy. The ambassador added on X that the Kom Ombo solar power plant project has an installed direct current generation capacity of 560 megawatts and includes more than one million photovoltaic panels, in addition to a 220 kilovolt (kV) booster station. He also said the project is expected to provide clean, green, and stable electricity to some 256,000 Egyptian households annually once it is officially operational. Liqiang emphasized that this station will significantly contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 760,000 tons annually, which will provide strong momentum for Egypt toward achieving the green development goals of Vision 2030. He explained that this is not just the implementation of an energy project, but also represents a model for Chinese-Egyptian cooperation to create a green future. China will continue to leverage its comprehensive advantages across the entire industrial chain, deeply participating in the investment and construction of photovoltaic, wind, energy storage, hydrogen, and gas turbine fields in Egypt, he said, as well as assisting in the transformation and upgrading of Egypt's energy structure.
