Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office millage renewal passes by four votes

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Vote recounts for the Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office's millage renewal request have come in. The renewal, which Sheriff Susan Hutson says would help pay for jail operations for the next decade, passed by a margin of just two votes on Saturday. New Orleans police officers honored for response to New Year's Day terror attack Now, elections officials say two additional votes went toward the renewal due to a clerical error in the original count. So, the total margin of victory for the millage is four votes. Hutson issued the following statement: If you voted yes on Saturday, this is YOUR victory for public safety and progress for all of New Orleans! Last Saturday, we saw real democracy at work and today proved it! I am so grateful to the people of New Orleans – this is real people power! We picked up more votes in the recount. This affirmed what we already knew: a majority of voters support renewing the millage that funds vital services at the Orleans Justice Center and across the entire Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office. We will continue to ensure our deputies are well-equipped and provide transformative justice so that detainees leave better than they came. Progress is evident more every day. New Orleans police officers honored for response to New Year's Day terror attack

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The New Orleans Police Department held a ceremony to honor its officers and others for their response to the New Year's Day terror attack on Bourbon Street. On Thursday, officers received certificates at the awards ceremony in Gallier Hall. New Orleans City Council honors Saints' Cam Jordan with his own day Among those being honored were the officers who shot and killed the person behind the attack. One of those officers is Sergeant Nigel Daggs. 'We just had to do, unfortunately, a deed that had to be done out that ensure to save the individuals of the city. We're just in a position where we had to make a response on that horrific accident. Incident was something that was unforeseen in the city ever before, but it was just one of the things that we were called to be at that place in time to get,' said Daggs.
