China sports brand sparks outrage after diving queen Quan Hongchan sidelined in event photo
Chinese sportswear giant Li-Ning is facing a public backlash and a wave of product returns after young diving sensation Quan Hongchan was placed on the sidelines rather than at the centre of a recent group photograph. The positioning row has sparked accusations of opportunism, with critics accusing the brand of initially capitalising on Quan's popularity for marketing purposes, but sidelining her after she lost to Chen Yuxi, her teammate and rival. Quan has a massive fan base both in China and overseas. The controversy arose during an event on May 6, co-hosted by the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Li-Ning brand, at the General Administration of Sport of China in Beijing. In another photo at the same event, Quan Hongchan, fifth from left, while Chen Yuxi, sixth from right, also put Quan not at the centre. New IOC president Kirsty Coventry faces complex geopolitics and gender minefield
Kirsty Coventry may soon discover that winning the presidency of the International Olympic Committee was the easy bit. Advertisement Russia, Donald Trump and the largely unpredictable nature of the world's politics, gender equality and sustainability all sit among the thorny issues she will need to tackle in the coming weeks, months and years. The youngest person to hold the most powerful position in world sport, the 41-year-old Zimbabwean is also the first woman to lead the Olympic Movement and the first from Africa. Her elevation to the post on Thursday was quickly welcomed by China and Russia, with Gao Zhidan, director of the General Administration of Sport of China and president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, among the earliest to congratulate her. In his letter, Gao was reported to have told the two-time Olympic swimming champion that China was 'willing to further consolidate and deepen its strategic partnership with the [IOC] and make China's contribution to promoting the reform and development of the Olympic movement'. Chinese official says China needs to do better despite Asian Winter Games success
Feb 15 (Reuters) - China topped the final medal table at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin with a record haul on Friday but its delegation's head stressed the need for improvement if the country is to be competitive at the highest level. The hosts won 32 golds - double the tally of nearest challengers South Korea - 27 silvers and 26 bronze to set a new medal-winning record at the end of the eight-day event. Even so, Zhou Jinqiang, head of China's delegation at the Games and vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, called on athletes to raise standards ahead of the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo next year. "While China's performance at the AWG was impressive, it still lags behind global standards in winter sports, with notable gaps in training, talent development, and the establishment of robust coaching and youth systems," Xinhua quoted him as saying. In addition to clocking up a record-breaking total medal tally, China's gold medal haul equalled that achieved by Kazakhstan in 2011. Nineteen of China's wins came in snow sports, the first time those disciplines delivered more victories than ice sports for Chinese athletes. "This shift highlights the comprehensive development of China's winter sports since the successful bid for the Beijing Winter Olympics," Zhou said. Japan finished third in the medal table, which featured only nine of the 34 participating nations. Kazakhstan won four gold medals to finish fourth while the Philippines claimed their first Asian Winter Games title, securing gold in the men's curling with victory over South Korea on Friday. "This is a great achievement that opens the door for our country's first Winter Olympics medal," said Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino.
