Choi Min-jeong grabs three golds for South Korea at Asian Winter Games
Harbin, China – Three-time Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong led the way with three golds as South Korea dominated the short track speedskating at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin over the weekend. Short track is one of the few sports with genuine world class competition at the Winter Asiad, and the South Koreans claimed six of the nine titles, with China snaring two and Kazakhstan claiming the last gold. Choi won individual titles in the 500 and 100 meters and also helped her country to the 2,000-meter mixed team gold to complete a career sweep of all five Asian Games titles available to women.

China 'extract a couple of teeth' from S.Korea's short track tiger to win gold
HARBIN, China, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Triple Olympic champion Choi Min-jeong led the way with three golds as South Korea dominated the short-track speed skating at the Asian Winter Games in Harbin over the weekend. Short track is one of the few sports with genuine world class competition at the Winter Asiad and the South Koreans claimed six of the nine titles, with China snaring two and Kazakhstan claiming the last gold. Choi won individual titles in the 500 and 100 metres and also helped her country to the 2,000m mixed team gold to complete a career sweep of all five Asian Games titles available to women. The multiple world champion was, however, unable to retain the women's 3,000m relay title she helped South Korea win in Sapporo in 2017. Choi had her team in the lead heading into the anchor leg but team mate Kim Gil-li, who had already won 1,500m gold, made contact with China's Gong Li and slid out to leave the home team a clear run to gold. "Winning gold against the South Korean team is like extracting teeth from a tiger, so we approached that 3,000m relay with a relaxed mindset, our expectations weren't very high," China's head coach Zhang Jing told Xinhua news agency. "South Korea's top athletes Kim and Choi are more experienced and competitive compared to some of our athletes, but the gap between us is narrowing." Lin Xiaojun, who won Olympic gold for South Korea as Lim Hyo-jun before making a switch to China in 2021, won the host nation's other gold in the men's 500m but slipped while leading in the 2,000m mixed team relay final. The 28-year-old also clashed with South Korea's 1,500m champion Park Ji-won and slid out in the anchor leg of the men's 5,000m relay, allowing Kazakhstan's Adil Galiakhmetov to skate past and claim the gold. South Korea have topped the medals table in short-track speed skating at the last two Winter Olympics and Zhang said the Asian Winter Games had been useful preparation for China's team ahead next year's edition in Italy. "Our athletes have gained valuable experience for the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, and learned lessons, particularly regarding athletes' mindset," she told Xinhua.

With 4 more gold medals, S. Korea meets Winter Asiad target after just 2 days
After only two days of competition in northeast China, South Korea has reached its target of winning 11 gold medals at the ninth Asian Winter Games. South Korea snapped up four gold medals on Sunday in Harbin, all of them from ice, after picking up seven gold medals the previous day. In short track speed skating, Choi Min-jeong became the first triple gold medalist of the competition when she won the women's 1,000-meter title at Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Multifunctional Hall. Choi had won gold medals in the mixed 2,000m relay and the women's 500m on Saturday. Choi became the first South Korean female athlete to win at least three gold medals at a Winter Asiad. Moments later, Jang Sung-woo was crowned the men's 1,000m champion, earning his second gold in Harbin following the relay title. South Korea finished the short track competition with six out of nine gold medals in the bags. At the adjacent oval, South Korea collected two gold medals in speed skating. Kim Min-sun won the women's 500m title in 38.24 seconds, holding off teammate Lee Na-hyun by 0.09 second -- a day after Lee beat Kim for gold in the 100m race. Those two then joined forces with Kim Min-ji for the gold in the inaugural women's team sprint race, as they edged out China by 0.23 second at 1:28.62. With 11 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals, South Korea sits in second place in the medal table. China leads the way with 15 gold, 15 silver and 14 bronze medals. Only two other countries have won a gold medal so far -- Japan with three and Kazakhstan with one. With short track races done and key speed skating events also in the books, South Korea may have to look elsewhere for medals over the remaining five days of the Asian Winter Games. South Korea could collect a couple more medals from the oval. Its men's and women's curling teams began their round-robin play on Sunday, with the medal rounds scheduled for Friday, the last day of the competition. Snowboarder Lee Chae-un, the men's slopestyle champion from Saturday, will compete in his main event, halfpipe, on Wednesday. (Yonhap)
