Mexico will not choose sides in US-China tariff war, but envoy urges Beijing to boost trade

Mexico intends to stay neutral in the US-China tariff war but will seek to boost trade with Beijing through increased agricultural exports to address a trade imbalance, Mexico's top envoy to China said on Wednesday. Advertisement Speaking at an event hosted by the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China, ambassador Jesús Seade acknowledged the United States as Mexico's top trade partner, but stressed his country's commitment to maintaining strong ties with China. 'There is no question that the US is our No 1 partner in business, in politics, in everything,' Seade said at the event in Beijing. 'But that does not mean that we choose sides, if they [US] get angry with China, we are angry with China? Not at all,' he added. Earlier this month in Geneva, China and the US agreed to a temporary truce , rolling back tariffs for 90 days. But the sustained trade tensions have spread to multiple geopolitical fronts, including growing competition for influence in the Global South , as well as with crucial trade partners like Mexico. Advertisement Seade said that Mexico had declared many times that the US was its closest partner, but Mexico also had a 'universal mentality', meaning the country wanted to do business and cooperate with many other countries.

Why some Chinese academics say it's time to rethink WWII history

Chinese academics are calling for the 'Western-centric' version of World War II to be rewritten by pushing back the start date nearly a decade and placing Chinese forces firmly on the front line against fascism. Advertisement Instead of Germany's 1939 invasion of Poland marking the beginning of the global conflict, some academics at a second world war history seminar in Beijing on Tuesday said it should be Japan's 1931 invasion of Manchuria, which escalated into a full-scale war in China in 1937. 'This historical perspective that marks 1939 as World War II's starting point … diminishes and undermines China's role in the war,' said Wang Wen, executive dean of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University. This year is the 80th anniversary of the end of the second world war and countries around the globe are marking it with their own commemorations. In Moscow this week, Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a Victory Day parade in Red Square , marking the surrender of Nazi Germany to the Soviet Union in 1945. Advertisement
