One-act plays raise curtain on Darwhekar birth centenary celebrations

1 2 3 Nagpur: Celebrating the birth centenary of theatre legend Dr Purushottam Darwhekar, city's iconic theatre group Ranjan Kala Mandir — founded by Darwhekar himself — brought the stage alive with three thought-provoking and entertaining one-act plays on Sunday. Each play was a unique offering by a different writer-director duo, showcasing the creative spirit of Nagpur's theatre scene — something Darwhekar always championed. The event, held at the Scientific Society Hall, marked the beginning of a year-long celebration of Darwhekar's life and legacy. The evening began with Pathishi Krushna Hawa (We need Krishna to support us), an all-woman play written and directed by Animasiddhi Kulkarni. Actors Anuradha Pande, Dr Anjali Bhandarkar, Archana Deshpande, Anjali Joshi and Medha Bhandarkar depicted stories of women's aspirations, struggles and emotional journeys, striking a chord with the audience. Next was 'Nothing to Say', a quiet yet powerful two-character drama penned by Prasad Dani and directed by Nachiket Mhaisalkar. Veteran actor Aniket Munshi and newcomer Antara Deshpande portrayed a complex father-daughter relationship with subtlety and depth, leaving the audience moved. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Flexible Phone Plans for Small Biz Undo The final act, Choricha Mamala (A case of theft), brought the house down with laughter. Written by Saurabh Masram and directed by Swapnil Jatkar, this play featured Swapnil Jatkar, Abhishek Kane, Pradyumn Bayaskar, Rohit Ghangrekar, and Madhusmita Gahalod in a riotous tale of mistaken identities and misplaced blame. A production team led by Swapnil Jatkar and Usha Jain, with Hemant Jichkar, Shailesh Bhalme, Anuradha Pendse, Aniket Gondane, and Dr Bhagyashree Chitnis ensured proper coordination. Speaking at the event, senior director Sanjay Pendse, a veteran member of Ranjan Kala Mandir, said, "This celebration is just the beginning. Throughout the year, we will be organising similar events to honour Dr Darwhekar's immense contribution to theatre. He built a cultural foundation in this city, and it's our duty to keep it alive and thriving." "The performances by these young artists tonight were nothing short of inspiring," said Dr Bhagyashree Chitnis, part of the organising team. "If this is the energy and creativity we're seeing now, then Marathi theatre has a bright future," she said.
