The G train is getting new open gangway subway cars
NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — New open gangway cars begin service on the G line Tuesday, the MTA announced.
One open gangway subway train, the R211T, already started service on the G line, and another will be added on Wednesday. Within two months, two more R211T trains will be added to the line, MTA President Demetrius Crichlow said.

The new R211T cars have no doors between train cars, a major win for the G, which stops in the middle of the platform, forcing riders into the last car, Chrichlow said.
The first R211 trains put on the C line last February have sped up boarding thanks to their wider door openings, Chrichlow said.
'They are running more reliably, they have larger doors themselves to allow for more people to enter and exit,' Chrichlow said. 'They also provide for improved accessibility, better lighting, and of course, better cameras.'
The subway system's cars are, on average, 25 years old, MTA Chair Janno Lieber said at the time.
It's the latest of major changes to the G line, which was shut over the summer for signal modernization. The signal system will be fully upgraded by 2027, according to the MTA.
While the G train was closed, the MTA also installed equipment for the line to have full cell connectivity eventually.
