Greg Cote Show: What Spelling Bees say about parenting, doubling-down on McOverrated, hitchhiking & more

Lots going on in the latest Greg Cote Show podcast Episode #273, out now, but two topics rise highest and tussle for the top of the marquee: ▪ The Scripps National Spelling Bee celebrates its 100th year and we celebrate the latest champion (a 13-year-old boy from Texas) and his winning word. I discuss my own past as a former elementary-school bee champ. And we mull over how children of Indian-American descent have come to dominate the national bee because they are teaching their kids intellectual pursuits while so-called 'American' parents steer the offspring to sports and stick a laptop in their hands to keep them quiet. The bee talk leads us to a video ranking of animal intelligence, dumbest to smartest, relative to humans. ▪ We preview the upcoming Florida Panthers-Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup Final rematch: I stir the pot on Connor 'McOverrated' and we brainstorm derogatory nicknames for his sidekick Leon Draisaitl. Also, the rarity of championship rematches, our predictions on who'll win and more. This is our 273rd episode overall and 22nd of 2025 and we welcome you back as always. Also on the new show: ▪ Me on growing up in the hitchhiking era. Which leads us to a Finger Hall of Fame -- and my unexpected first-ballot nominee. ▪ How Jumpin' Charlie delayed recording of latest episode. ▪ Chris' 'Intelligence Few Minutes.' ▪ Le Batard's unusual praise of our episode last week. ▪ Chris analyzes the 'Slow Children At Play' road signs. ▪ Video of Greg's new racehorse, Isla Grande, boarding an Argentina-to-Miami flight. ▪ Chris' (alleged) disgusting behavior with a Blizzard spoon. ▪ The under-analyzed rivalry of Bullshit vs. Horseshit. ▪ Gracelin's gymnastics performance. ▪ Is a Grandfather vs. Granddaughter Olympics in the works? ▪ New Dad Jokes, Three Facts, Jack!, Gripe of Wrath and the Top 20 Herbs Countdown -- No. 7! There's all of this and more in our new GCS #273. Aside from occasional bonus episodes, a new show drops every Monday morning at 7 on Apple Podcasts, Spotify — wherever you pod, including at Find our entire show catalog with all 273 episodes HERE. (We also simulcast on Sirius XM radio Mondays from 5 to 6 p.m.) Our podcast debuted in March 2020 just as the pandemic hit. (Coincidence; don't blame us). Hollywood star Chris Evans reveals why he skipped Cannes Film Festival

Chris Evans skipped the Cannes Film Festival in order to spend time with his mom. The 43-year-old actor has revealed via social media that he missed the premiere of 'Honey Don't!', his new comedy movie, in Cannes, because he wanted to spend time with his mom Lisa on her 70th birthday. The actor - who stars in 'Honey Don't!' alongside Margaret Qualley, Aubrey Plaza and Charlie Day - wrote on Instagram Story: "I wish I could've been with my incredible cast and filmmakers at Cannes but it was my mother's 70th birthday and there are some things you just can't miss! Congrats everyone!! (sic)" Chris' co-stars - including Margaret, Aubrey and Charlie, as well as director Ethan Coen - did attend the movie's premiere at the world-famous film festival in the south of France. Meanwhile, Chris' mom previously revealed that her son always wanted to become an actor. Speaking to Esquire magazine in 2020, Lisa shared: "His focus became very myopic. "The director of the drama programme made the kids do Shakespeare and Dario Fo and Pirandello. Chris loved it. Even at that young age, you could tell he understood what he was reading. He would portray a character in a way that might be a little different than what you might expect. Just very interesting choices." Despite this, Chris used to fear becoming a well-known star. The Hollywood actor realised that taking on the role of Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe would change his life. Lisa shared: "His biggest fear was losing his anonymity. "He said, 'I have a career now where I can do work I really like. I can walk my dog. Nobody bothers me. Nobody wants to talk to me. I can go wherever I want. And the idea of losing that is terrifying to me.' "He would call and ask for my advice. I said to him, 'Look, you want to do acting work for the rest of your life? If you do this part, you will have the opportunity. You'll never have to worry about paying the rent. If you take the part, you just have to decide, It's not going to affect my life negatively - it will enable it.'"

'I thought I was speaking to my favourite TV vet - I lost £11,000'

Lisa Nock, 44, was drawn in by a 'fake but convincing' Instagram account of Dr Chris - an Australian veterinarian best known for the television series Bondi Vet A disabled woman was conned out of £11,000 by a scammer on Instagram pretending to be an Australian TV vet. Lisa Nock, 44, a self-confessed superfan, fell for a "fake but convincing" profile claiming to be Dr Chris Brown from the popular show Bondi Vet. The scam artist struck up a conversation with Lisa, leading her to believe she was chatting with the real celebrity vet. The chats soon took a "romantic" turn, and the imposter began "love bombing" her, even going as far as proposing marriage. ‌ Convinced she was in a genuine relationship, Lisa sent money for supposed flights and visas so that 'Dr Chris' could visit her in the UK. Over 18 months, she made multiple payments totalling £11,000 to various cryptocurrency wallets, with one transaction alone amounting to £7,000. ‌ The money, mostly sourced from her disability allowance, forced Lisa to give up her Taekwondo and swimming lessons to support the scam. It wasn't until January 2025 that Lisa realised the truth, severed ties with the charlatan, and contacted West Midlands Police, who passed the case to Action Fraud. The investigation into the incident is still underway. Lisa, from Staffordshire in the West Midlands, who is unable to work, said: "I thought it was real at the time. Although they were flirty at the beginning, we were talking for six months before money was mentioned." She lamented how the fraudster fully exploited her vulnerability: "They knew I was disabled, had limited funds and they exploited that entirely. Didn't have a lot financially and now I've been left with nothing. "I'm sharing my story to help warn others, especially those that are vulnerable like me. I never thought something like this would happen to me- until it was too late." Lisa's ordeal began when she reached out to what she believed was Dr Chris' official Instagram account in September 2022 - receiving an instant reply. She was swept off her feet as their communication quickly escalated from friendly chats about family and friends to heavy flirting and so-called 'love bombing'. "I felt very excited because I wasn't expecting a response," Lisa said. "Our chat started friendly, talking about family and friends, but then it soon turned flirty and then the love bombing started. I wasn't looking for something like that, but I liked the friendship side of it." ‌ By November, Dr Chris' impersonator professed his "love" for Lisa and expressed a desire to meet her in person. Claiming he needed £2,000 for flights to the UK, he manipulated Lisa's emotions. Lisa admitted: "I lost myself in it and believed that he loved me. I wanted to see him so much, I started going without things like Taekwondo and swimming lessons to transfer the money." ‌ On April 23, 2023, Lisa transferred £2,000 to a bank account via PayPal in anticipation of his visit. The scammer's ruse continued when he convinced her to send an additional £7,000 to cover the cost of hiring another vet to fill in on Bondi Vet during his supposed upcoming visit to the UK. He helped her create a cryptocurrency wallet — only accessible with a unique private key — and Lisa handed over an additional £2,000 in digital currency payments before finally declaring in December 2024 that she "couldn't do it anymore" as she was financially stretched. The scammer ceased contact with Lisa abruptly. It was when Lisa noticed the emails came from personal Yahoo accounts rather than official veterinary clinic addresses that she began to smell a rat. ‌ On January 31, 2025, Lisa decided enough was enough and reported the matter to West Midlands Police. Her case has since been referred to Action Fraud and she's currently awaiting further news on the situation. Lisa reflected on the experience with regret, saying: "I'm not hopeful that I'll get any money back. They are sneaky and clever - they really fooled me. I feel humiliated and let down. "Looking back, there were red flags, such as I never spoke to this person over the phone or FaceTime. I stopped buying certain things and going out with my friend so I could put aside some of my disability allowance. "How can people be so cruel. To this day, I don't know who I was talking to for a year-and-a-half, which is scary. I wouldn't want anyone to go through what I have and I hope the real Dr Chris knows I'm still a fan."

A new Soundgarden album featuring late frontman Chris Cornell could see the light of day

A new Soundgarden album featuring late frontman Chris Cornell could see the light of day. On the eighth anniversary of the Grunge legend's death (18.05.25), bassist Ben Shepherd has revealed there is an album they made with the 'Black Hole Sun' singer before his passing, which is "yet to be named", suggesting it could be released in the future. When listening back to their music, the musician feels an "overwhelming hit of awe camaraderie, power of creativity, majesty even, and love." He penned on Instagram on the anniversary: "As I wait for my son Noah to get out of school today I'm thinking about … well actually its stuck in my head and's been there since early this morning like a proud spring bird dammit. 'Its a song Chris and Matt wrote 'The Road Less Traveled' for our album that has yet to be named, just hearing Chris' voice helps, I know he did that for everyone he knew…. help them, he did for me, filled with self doubt and indebtedness and in just his tone knew what I was going through and forgave me like he always did even when he was older. It's at this point of recording all of our previous albums I'd get this overwhelming hit of awe, camaraderie, power of creativity, majesty even, and love, from the music, and my bandmates…. and I guess just pure life force. 'I can tell you, it feels good and invigorating to hear Chris singing from over that horizon and hear the mighty… mighty life, of souls sharing. To hear, as a fan… and band member, a song or two Chris brought in a few years ago turn before my very ears and finger blisters into a full blown Soundgarden tune is like feeling a glacier fall away off your chest. (sic)" Soundgarden will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November. And they have musicians in mind to perform lead vocals in Chris' place. Speaking about the honour, guitarist Kim Thayil admitted it's a "high bar, not just technically, but emotionally" when it comes to choosing someone to represent their beloved bandmate and show "reverence" for the group's legacy. He told Billboard: "It's a high bar, not just technically, but emotionally. There has to be a reverence for the missing brother and founder, and there also has to be reverence for the legacy — both for Chris' work and Chris' creativity, as well as the regard and reverence we have for ourselves collectively and for each other. Some suggestions have come out; I'm not prepared to share that, but I'll just say it's a higher bar than the usual composite of guitarists and drummers or singers." Kim admitted Soundgarden were part of the alternative scene that didn't pay too much attention to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. However, after Chris inducted Heart into the Hall in 2013, and drummer Matt Cameron was inducted as part of Pearl Jam, they had a change of heart. Chris was blown away by the "enthusiasm of the fans" when he took part in Heart's induction and realised how important the validation is. The frontman tragically took his own life in 2017 aged 52. Soundgarden's last album was 2012's 'King Animal'.

RTE Super Garden contestant backs himself to win despite judge's harsh comment

A young garden designer is confident he will win RTÉ's competition show Super Garden, despite some harsh comments from the judges. Chris Walsh, from Wicklow, was the fourth budding designer featured on the series on Tuesday night. The 32-year-old transformed Aline and Marcelo's bland and overgrown back garden into a 'culinary canopy' where the Brazilian couple can entertain their family and friends. A beautiful wooden canopy is the centre of the garden, featuring a BBQ and sage green dining table and chairs. As Marcelo is a chef, a BBQ area was at the top of his request list. A stoned path connects the house and the canopy area, as gorgeous colourful plants line the perimeters. Judges Brian Burke, representing Woodies, Carol Marks from Bord Bia and former Super Garden winner Monica Alvarez praised Chris for listening to the homeowners wishes. They said he produced a low-maintenance garden like they asked for, as most plants only need to be touched once a year. However, Brian was disappointed that Chris' garden didn't show off his ecological background better. The Wicklow man studied wildlife biology in IT Tralee and worked in environmental consultancy before taking the plunge to pursue his dream as a garden designer. Speaking after inspecting the garden, Brian said: 'The water feature is a pre-packaged item, it doesn't really scream someone with an ecological background. For someone with Chris' background there was an opportunity to do a little bit more.' This comment didn't dampen Chris' spirits, however, as he believes he still has a chance of winning the show. Out of five contestants, the winner will receive a prize that every garden designer dreams of- having their creation showcased at Bord Bia's Bloom later this year. Chris said: 'I have brought a stunning garden here, the home owners are blown away by it. It's top notch, that's why I feel I deserve to win it. I think I'm going to bloom, I hope I'm going to bloom." Judge Monica questioned what the 'wow factor' of the young man's garden was. Feeling proud of his creation, Chris said: 'I feel the wow factor has really come into its own with the planting. "I have a floating timber shelf that has its own story. It was hit by lightning in a convent in Wexford and is over 200 years old. That ties in with the BBQ and other features are a granite boulder at the water feature that will allow frogs and other animals to come in and use the water feature and be able to leave it again.' Chris hopes he has done enough to take the crown, as his garden would be seen by over 100,000 visitors at Bloom, Ireland's largest garden showcase. As part of RTÉ's Super Garden series, each designer is given €15,000 and three weeks to complete their masterpiece. This year, every contestant was paired with a homeowner who recently purchased a house built by Glenveagh Homes in Baker Hall, Navan, Co Meath. They are each given a similar-sized garden to create their designs, working alongside each other in the new housing development. The fifth and final episode of Super Garden airs on RTÉ One next Tuesday at 7pm.
