Detroit Jazz Festival reveals 2025 lineup for Labor Day weekend

The Detroit Jazz Festival – the world's largest free jazz festival – announced its 2025 lineup on April 15 during a livestreamed preview event at the Gretchen C. Valade Jazz Center, on the campus of Wayne State University. The evening featured live performances from the 2025 Artist-in-Residence Jason Moran, as well as the Detroit Jazz Festival All-Stars Generation Quintet. The partial lineup does not yet include a number of local musicians and acts, which still have until June 1 to submit applications. It does, however, include a constellation of national and international acts both new and returning, in a particularly muscular emphasis on straight-ahead jazz. 'We'll also have a number of surprises along the way,' Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation president and artistic director Chris Collins told the Free Press. 'There's a few things we have yet to announce, and we will look for some special events to happen here and there, (including) a couple of Midtown after-hours specials at the Gretchen Jazz Center. It's very special – and thank goodness for our sponsors and donors, it's still, once again, completely free after 47 years. It's unheard of, anywhere, to have this level of premier festival at no cost to attendees.' The 2025 partial lineup: Special Performance by 2025 Artist-In-Residence Jason Moran (TBA) Keyon Harrold: 'Foreverland' More: Detroit Jazz Festival announces 2025 artist in residence Maria Schneider Orchestra Kenny Barron Hiromi's Sonicwonder Chris Potter Trio featuring Matt Brewer and Kendrick Scott John Pizzarelli Endea Owens & The Cookout Herlin Riley Quartet Tatiana Eva-Marie & The Avalon Jazz Band Special Performance by the 2025 Artist-In-Residence Jason Moran (TBA) Chucho Valdés and Paquito D'Rivera Reunion Sextet Branford Marsalis Quartet Connie Han Trio Omar Sosa Quarteto Americanos Lakecia Benjamin Walter Smith III Quartet Special Performance by the 2025 Artist-In-Residence Jason Moran (TBA) The John Scofield Trio featuring Vicente Archer & Bill Stewart w/ Special Guest Nicholas Payton Kris Davis James Francies Trio 2025 Kresge Eminent Artist Award Winner: Marion Hayden Legacy Ensemble with Special Guest Kamau Kenyatta' The Detroit Jazz Festival will be held in downtown Detroit on Aug. 29-Sept. 1 (Labor Day weekend). Northwestern coach Chris Collins signs multiyear extension

April 4 - Northwestern basketball coach Chris Collins signed a multiyear extension to remain with the school. Athletic director Mark Jackson announced the agreement on Friday but didn't reveal any terms. CBS Sports said his new salary will put him among the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten. Michigan State's Tom Izzo earned $6.2 million and UCLA's Mick Cronin $6.1 million in the 2024-25 season, according to the USA Today's coaches salary database. Collins' salary was listed at just shy of $3.3 million. Collins, 50, just completed his 12th season with the Wildcats. He has led the school to three NCAA Tournaments, including back-to-back appearances in 2023 and 2024. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in the 2022-23 season. "Northwestern is my family's home. I am really proud of what we have built over the last 12 years with our basketball program and couldn't be more excited to continue the journey together," said Collins, who has a 194-190 record (.505) with the program. His win total is second in school history behind Dutch Lonborg, who was 236-203 from 1928-50. The Wildcats finished the 2024-25 season at 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten), despite playing without two of their top three scorers, guards Brooks Barnhizer (17.1 points per game) and Jalen Leach (14.3), for a combined 26 games due to injuries.

(AP Photo/Michael Conroy) Northwestern and basketball coach Chris Collins have agreed to a two-year contract extension through 2030, the school announced on Friday. Collins is the only coach in the program's 120-year history to lead Northwestern to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats made it for the first time in 2017 and returned in 2023 and 2024 after five straight losing seasons. Advertisement Collins has a 194-190 record in 12 years. He is second on the program's all-time wins list behind Dutch Lonborg, who was 236-203 from 1928 to 1950. The Wildcats finished 17-16 this past season after a 10-3 start and tied for 12th in the Big Ten at 7-13. 'Northwestern is my family's home," Collins said in a statement. 'I am really proud of what we have built over the last 12 years with our basketball program and couldn't be more excited to continue the journey together. I am grateful to President Michael Schill and (athletic director) Mark Jackson for their continued belief in me. We are all aligned to work to create even more history in the future. Go 'Cats!' Jackson, who was hired away from Villanova in August, called Collins 'one of the top coaches in the country.' 'While his on the court performance certainly warrants this extension, I'm more impressed with what Chris represents off the court, the way our student-athletes carry themselves as young men, the way they graduate from one of the top institutions in the world, and the overall culture that everyone connected to Northwestern Basketball buys into,' he said. 'Chris, with the help of so many, has created all of it, including an environment in Welsh-Ryan Arena that is second to none. The energy of our basketball program helps elevate all aspects of our athletic department.' Advertisement Collins' name was linked to the opening at Villanova, which fired Kyle Neptune after three years three weeks ago and hired Maryland's Kevin Willard. He has ties to Philadelphia, where his father Doug spent eight years playing for the NBA's 76ers, but he also has a strong connection to the Chicago area. Collins grew up about 10 miles from Welsh-Ryan Arena in suburban Northbrook and was chosen Mr. Basketball in Illinois. He went on to star at Duke and spent 13 years as an assistant under Mike Krzyzewski before taking over at Northwestern in 2013. Northwestern, which hosted the inaugural NCAA championship game in 1939, finally made the tournament in Collins' fourth season. The Wildcats won 24 games and beat Vanderbilt before losing to Gonzaga. But instead of emerging as a consistent winner, Northwestern went 60-90 overall and 26-71 in conference play over the next five years. The heat on Collins was so high following the 2021-22 season that then-athletic director Derrick Gragg released a statement saying the coach would get at least one more year to turn around his struggling program. Northwestern went 22-12 and made the NCAA each of the next two seasons, and Collins got a three-year extension through 2028 two years ago. Northwestern coach rips Big Ten hotel: 'The rooms were a thousand degrees'

Northwestern opened the first round of the Big Ten Tournament with a 72-64 win over Minnesota in Indianapolis on Wednesday. Following the win, Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said that "there's been a lot of stuff happening to this team on and off the floor," which apparently included an issue in the team's hotel. "We're used to being treated like that by this league," Collins said via The Athletic. "The rooms were a thousand degrees. There was no A/C in the hotel, and our guys' rooms were 85 degrees — and that's where the league [Big Ten] puts you. Every way they turn, they're trying to get us. … You just hate it for the guys. I have seniors, and they're playing for their lives, and they come down and said, 'Coach, I have to have an ice bucket next to my bed. It's steaming hot.' "Even this morning, after we did our walk-through, our guys had to sit in the lobby or sit in our team room. They couldn't even go to their rooms." The lack of air conditioning in the hotel had reportedly been an issue for "the past 10 days." In what was a tightly contested affair, Nick Martinelli had a game-high 28 points and seven rebounds for the Wildcats, while Ty Berry tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Matthew Nicholson recorded three blocks. Northwestern, the No. 13 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, is 17-15 overall and 7-13 in Big Ten play this season. It now faces No. 5-seed Wisconsin on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. ET. Of the 12 remaining teams, Northwestern has the 10th-best odds to win the Big Ten Tournament (+20000). The Wildcats aren't projected to make the NCAA Tournament, according to FOX Sports bracket forecaster Mike DeCourcy . They've made each of the past two tournaments and three tournaments total under Collins (2016-17 being the other season), who's in his 12th season as Northwestern's head coach. The program is a combined 194-189 under Collins since the 2014-15 college basketball season. "They'll put us in one that's hotter if we leave it up to the league," Collins said of the Big Ten.
