BCSD looks to eliminate autism program and up to 200 personnel

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Bakersfield City School District is considering the elimination of its high-functioning autism program. The resolution from BCSD says the high-functioning autism program would end for the 2025-26 school year, taking 36 full time positions with it. The school district said the change will better align programs to match those of the Kern High School District. This will better serve students with high-functioning autism and help them with their transition into high school. 17 News asked for the school district for comment but a spokesperson directed us to reach out directly to board members. Wiki's Wine Dive & Grill closing Sunday Dr. Chris Cruz-Boone, Trustee for Area 3, declined to comment, citing the Brown Act. On top of those terminations, another resolution in the agenda proposes cutting positions not specifically tied to the high-functioning autism program. The proposal cites lack of work and lack of funds. Those positions include aides, activity leaders, clerks and custodians, among others. 184 positions would be eliminated in total. The district currently employs 4,389 personnel and serves 28,871 students from pre-k to junior high. The board meetings take place every fourth Tuesday of the month, starting at 6 p.m. in BCSD's board room, off Baker and Niles street. The meetings are also live streamed on YouTube. Tuesday is Election Day in the 32nd Assembly District

Voters in the 32nd Assembly District should head to the polls Tuesday — or make sure the ballot that was mailed to them is cast and postmarked by 8 p.m. Tuesday — to vote for one of four candidates vying to fill a seat that has been vacant since May. Four candidates are on the ballot: Libertarian William Brown of Visalia; Democrat Chris Cruz-Boone of Bakersfield; Republican Stan Ellis of Bakersfield; and Republican Holli Willibey of Frazier Park. The 32nd District seat opened when Republican Vince Fong won a special election for a seat in Congress following former Rep. Kevin McCarthy's resignation. If one of the four candidates secures more than 50% of the vote, he or she will take the seat and there won't be a runoff. But if that isn't achieved, the two candidates with the most votes will face off April 29, making it nearly a year that the 32nd has been without representation. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., at which time ballot counting is expected to begin. Because the 32nd District covers parts of Kern and Tulare counties, watch the Secretary of State's website for the latest tally. The 32nd spans much of greater Bakersfield, Taft, Tehachapi, Lake Isabella and Visalia and other Tulare County communities.

Special election primary ballots for vacant Assembly District 32 seat mailed to voters

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Kern County Elections Office said ballots for a special election primary for the vacant Assembly District 32 seat are now arriving for registered voters. Elections officials said ballots were sent for the Feb. 25 special election beginning Monday. Every registered voter in the 32nd Assembly District will receive a ballot in the mail. Voters will receive voter, candidate and ballot drop box location information with their mail-in ballot. Who's asking for your vote in the 32nd Assembly District special election? The primary will determine the top two candidates who will then advance to a runoff election on April 29. The special election was called back in December after, Rep. Vince Fong (R-Bakersfield) vacated the Assembly seat he won, but didn't campaign for, since he was running for his CA-20 House of Representatives seat. Fong won re-election to his 20th District U.S. House seat in November and will continue to serve in Washington D.C. leaving the 32nd District California Assembly seat open pending the results of the upcoming special election. Dr. Chris Cruz-Boone, Stan Ellis, Holli Willibey and William Brown Jr. are candidates running for the seat. You can view interviews with the candidates below.
