The 7 best cars for a family holiday revealed with surprising favourite coming out on top… does yours make the list?

THOUSANDS of parents have had their say on what the best cars are for a family road trip - with a spacious Hyundai coming out on top. A poll of 2,000 parents conducted by CarGurus has revealed what they look for in a vehicle for family getaways. 3 3 3 The Hyundai Tucson, a great all-rounder SUV, came out on top thanks to its good boot space, which is up to 620 litres, as well as decent fuel economy. Indeed, it works out at 38mpg for petrol models, 46mpg for hybrids and more still for the plug-in hybrid. Better still, Hyundai offers a tough-to-beat five-year unlimited mileage warranty from new. The car also works for those on a budget, with used variants for the latest gen model starting from just over £15,000. CarGurus also found that reliability ranked the highest as something parents are looking for in a motor, with fuel efficiency and boot space also very important. Those polled also said they would, on average, spend around £21,000 on a family break-friendly car. While EVs are becoming steadily more popular, petrol-powered vehicles remain the vehicle of choice for parents - with 44% preferring this option. Indeed, just 6% would go electric. For family holidays, most - at 25% - would choose an SUV, although large hatchbacks and mid-size hatchbacks were also up there. Chris Knapman, editorial director for CarGurus UK, which has created a 'Best Family Holiday Cars Guide', said: 'Family holidays often mean long hours on the road, packed boots, and keeping everyone comfortable. Cars & 30-tonne HGV collide in high-speed pile-up – but is all as it seems 'With this in mind, the Hyundai Tucson stood out as a clear winner – it's extremely practical, efficient, and many examples on the used market will still be covered by Hyundai's generous five-year, unlimited mileage warranty. 'Not only that, but the Tucson is a quiet and comfortable car to drive, making it ideal for covering long distances. 'That combination is perfect for families planning to holiday in the UK or travel further afield.' CarGurus also recommended the latest Skoda Kodiaq as a family holiday car - costing from about £35,000 - as a 'strong alternative' for those able to pay a little more. At the other end of the budget scale, the Suzuki S-Cross - which can be bought for as little as £5,000 for the 2013 to 2020 model, and the evergreen Toyota RAV4 ranked highly as 'great' options. Knapman added: 'With SUVs tending to offer good practicality, it's no surprise to see this body style topped the list with holidaymakers. 'What is perhaps more unexpected is that you can find models from under £10,000 that meet the other items on consumers' wish lists, including the possibility of manufacturer-backed warranties for peace of mind.'

The best car for family holidays has been named

A study of 2,000 parents has revealed what they look for in a vehicle for family getaways. The Hyundai Tucson has been crowned the best car for family holidays, according to a recent study. A survey of 2,000 parents unveiled their top criteria when choosing a vehicle for family trips, and these factors were used to determine which models best fit the bill. While many families would typically opt for large or mid-size hatchbacks for their holiday travels, it was the SUV that emerged victorious, with the Hyundai Tucson taking the top spot due to its array of desirable features such as ample boot space, fuel efficiency and reliability - all of which were listed as parents' top priorities in a family holiday car. ‌ ‌ The SUV stood out for its impressive features, including generous boot space (up to 620 litres) and respectable fuel economy, averaging around 38mpg for petrol models and 46mpg for hybrids, with even greater efficiency for the plug-in hybrid if regularly charged. Additionally, it offers a five-year unlimited mileage warranty from new and is budget-friendly, with used models of the latest generation starting from just over £15,000. When purchasing a car, 52%, do or would factor in whether they were likely to take a driving holiday into their decision-making. To help, CarGurus has put together a 'Best Family Holiday Cars Guide' offering vehicle recommendations and advice for all budgets. Chris Knapman, editorial director for CarGurus UK, commented: "Family holidays often mean long hours on the road, packed boots, and keeping everyone comfortable. "With this in mind, the Hyundai Tucson stood out as a clear winner – it's extremely practical, efficient, and many examples on the used market will still be covered by Hyundai's generous five-year, unlimited mileage warranty." ‌ "The Tucson is a quiet and comfortable car to drive, making it ideal for covering long distances. That combination is perfect for families planning to holiday in the UK or travel further afield," he added. This year Brits can expect to rack up significant mileage as two thirds plan to go on a staycation in the UK, with the Lake District, Cornwall, and Devon being the top destinations. Meanwhile, 16% intend to drive abroad for their holiday. On average, those who use a car take two family holidays a year which involve driving. While 75% of everyone surveyed said they're either 'more likely' or equally as likely to take a 'driving holiday' now than they had before. Chris notes: "With SUVs tending to offer good practicality, it's no surprise to see this body style topped the list with holiday makers. "What is perhaps more unexpected is that you can find models from under £10,000 that meet the other items on consumers' wish lists, including the possibility of manufacturer-backed warranties for peace of mind."

Over half of all UK new car models available in 2025 are SUVs

Analysis from CarGurus — an online automotive retail platform - has found that there are now 193 new SUV models available to motorists from the U.K.'s top 35 manufacturers, compared to just 30 in 2000 (analysis includes SUVs and crossovers). Further research from CarGurus revealed that all 35 of the U.K.'s most popular brands now offer at least one SUV in their range, with 57% offering five or more SUV variants (20 out of 35). Considering the top three brands with the greatest number of SUVs, there are 46 different options (18 from Audi, 15 through BMW, and 13 from Mercedes). In 2000, less than half of the manufacturers examined in the study offered an SUV. The ever-growing popularity of SUVs is reflected in customer demand. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders, eight of the ten best-selling cars year-to-date in 2025 are SUVs, with only the Vauxhall Corsa and Volkswagen Golf representing other car categories. Similarly, eight of the top 10 best-selling cars in 2024 were SUVs, with the Ford Puma, Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke, and Tesla Model Y making the top five. The continued rapid rise in this body style has led to an 18% increase in new SUV models in 2025 vs. 2024. Furthermore, of the 193 variations available, 33% are EVs (64). The CarGurus team also found that traditionally popular body styles have experienced a sharp decline in availability across the top 35 manufacturers studied, with 52% of new cars available today being SUVs (52%). In particular, MPVs are down by over 70% since their peak to 22 models (compared to 75 in 2011-2015), and hatchback options have decreased by 46% over the same period, from 100 variations to just 54. Chris Knapman, CarGurus U.K. Editorial Director, said: 'Features like the high driving position, flexible interior space, big boot, and potential off-road capability make SUVs an appealing body style to consumers, so it's no surprise that manufacturers have been racing to meet this demand with an increasingly varied supply of new models. 'Of course, this increase in appetite for SUVs has meant there's been less demand for other types of cars, with the choice of MPVs in particular having dwindled on the new car market. Buyers after one of these less in-demand body styles would do well to look to the used market instead, where there are still plenty of models - SUVs and otherwise - to suit all price points and needs.' SUV offering numbers broken down by brand: "Over half of all UK new car models available in 2025 are SUVs" was originally created and published by Just Auto, a GlobalData owned brand.
