DAK PRESCOTT (COWBOYS), MICHAEL PENIX JR. (FALCONS), AND CALEB WILLIAMS (BEARS) HEADLINE EPISODE 4 OF CHRIS SIMMS' QUARTERBACK COUNTDOWN, NOW ON 'CHRIS SIMMS UNBUTTONED' AND 'PRO FOOTBALL TALK'

Simms' QB Countdown Continues Today with Next Tiers - 'Needs More Info', 'Is This It?', and 'Ready to Launch' - Continues with QBs #10-6 this Wednesday, June 4 and Culminates with the Top Five QBs on Monday, June 9; In-Depth Breakdowns for Each Ranking Weekly on Chris Simms Unbuttoned Podcast 'He's a leader in a lot of ways and he's everything you'd want your organization to embody and stand for.' – Simms on Cowboys' Dak Prescott '[Michael] Penix Jr. could hit some of the explosive plays that [Falcons backup QB] Kirk Cousins couldn't when he was the starter.' – Simms on Falcons' Michael Penix Jr. 'I will be shocked if he's not one of the most improved players under [new Bears head coach] Ben Johnson.' – Simms on Bears' Caleb Williams STAMFORD, Conn. – June 2, 2025 – NBC Sports' Chris Simms continues his list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast and on 'PFT Live' today, headlined by three-time Pro Bowler Dak Prescott of the Cowboys and 2024 first round picks Michael Penix Jr. of the Falcons and Caleb Williams of the Bears. This year's countdown features a new format, with Simms focusing on tiers and groups of quarterbacks as opposed to specific numeric rankings until the later rounds. Continuing the countdown, Simms unveiled his quarterbacks ranked in the next tiers today, with QBs in the 'Needs More Info', 'Is This It?', and 'Ready to Launch' tiers. Continuing today and moving on to QBs #10–6 this Wednesday, June 4, and culminating with his top five on Monday, June 9, Simms will unveil a group of quarterbacks on each Chris Simms Unbuttoned episode and discuss his rankings on 'PFT Live' with Mike Florio. Simms, a third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2003 NFL Draft who played eight NFL seasons, will also offer in-depth player breakdowns and rankings explanations throughout each week on Chris Simms Unbuttoned. Simms has had success in projecting college quarterbacks – including naming Jayden Daniels, who was named AP's 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year following a season that saw him lead the Washington Commanders to the NFC Championship Game, as his No. 2 QB prospect in 2024. Additionally, Simms named C.J. Stroud, who was named AP's 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year, as his top QB prospect in 2023, Patrick Mahomes as his most exciting prospect in 2017, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen as his top-two QBs in 2018, and Justin Herbert as his No. 2 QB in 2020. The rankings will continue Wednesday, June 4, on the next episode of Chris Simms Unbuttoned. The following are highlights from this week's edition of Chris Simms Unbuttoned: Needs More Info: Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons 'Michael Penix Jr. only played a few games, so I have to see a little more. Here's the big thing…the arm talent pops off the screen. There is no question about that. Penix Jr. could hit some of the explosive plays that [Falcons backup QB] Kirk Cousins couldn't when he was the starter. The only difference is that with Penix Jr., they had to pull back the playbook a little bit. He can make big power throws with ease. It was three games, and it was basic, it was the beginner's part of the playbook. They still had the training wheels on to a degree and that's why I need to see more.' Dake Maye, New England Patriots 'He's certainly exceeded my expectations. It looks like I'm wrong about my draft ranking on Maye [6th ranked QB in 2024]. The thing you love about him is his big play ability. First off, he fixed some of the mechanical issues I was worried about in college and that's not easy to do. He also became a more consistent thrower of the football, but there is no denying the big play ability. The ball explodes out of his hands and the running takes you by surprise. The bad is that he takes way too many unnecessary hits, and he has a little bit of that disease waiting for that one wide receiver to get open.' Is This It?: Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys 'Injuries are a part of the issue, of course. I do believe his arm has also taken a step back in some ways...I don't love it. There's a reason there are always redzone issues with Prescott. When you compare him to some of the other guys, it's one of the slower releases in football. I love the way he handles himself and deals with criticism. He's a leader in a lot of ways and he's everything you'd want your organization to embody and stand for.' Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins 'When it comes to getting the ball out, he looks like he's in 'fast forward' compared to Prescott. His ability to be pinpoint in short areas is another advantage he has. Tua is amazing in that area, he just is. I love his quickness, his foot quickness, his ability to come off of a play action fake. Still, the big thing is big game football. Every year around December, we all start to question the highest paid player on the Dolphins, Tua, and if he's going to be okay.' Trevor Lawrence, Jacksonville Jaguars 'He's one of the tougher guys to rank because there's still unbelievable talent, but with the regression the last two years, is this just who he is? You get into last season, and it really got worse. We talked about some mechanical issues throwing the football coming out of the NFL Draft, and he still has them. His ceiling is higher than Dak Prescott and Tua [Tagovailoa], but his ability to make to consistent quarterback play is less than theirs. I expect [new Jaguars head coach] Liam Coen to fix him, but I've also seen two head coaches with him that haven't fixed him. It's going to be on [Lawrence].' Ready to Launch: Bo Nix, Denver Broncos 'Drew Brees Jr. has got a chance here. He's got a powerful arm, a quick release, and he can push the ball down the field with the best of them. His decision-making is off-the-charts good. His arm strength is damn good and he doesn't need space to do it. He always has a good base and because he's so strong and athletic, he can throw a 20-yard out route or an in-cut without taking a step. He's got a great compact motion and it's one of the quicker releases in all of football already. I don't have very many questions about what he can and can't do. To me, it's about experience and continuing to grow the playbook around him…Whose arm is better, him or [Washington Commanders QB] Jayden Daniels? I don't know, but it's close. I'm not sure it's not Bo Nix.' Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears 'I think a lot of the problems we saw last season were systemic. He had more on his shoulders from the get-go than [Houston Texans QB] C.J. Stroud or Jayden Daniels. Everything I watch with Caleb Williams, I go, 'This is coachable and fixable. I'm not going to worry about it.' But when you see his good plays from last year, it's as good as anybody you're going to watch. If you took his 40 best plays of the year, you'd go, 'Is he as good as [Buffalo Bills QB] Josh Allen?' Of course, there are the negatives: holding the ball, waiting for more, putting pressure on himself to make the 'big play.' But there were still a lot of good moments to go along with that. He doesn't have mechanical issues. I will be shocked if he's not one of the most improved players under [new Bears head coach] Ben Johnson.' NEWLY ACQUIRED SAM DARNOLD (SEAHAWKS) AND GENO SMITH (RAIDERS) HEADLINE EPISODE 3 OF CHRIS SIMMS' QUARTERBACK COUNTDOWN, NOW ON 'CHRIS SIMMS UNBUTTONED' AND 'PRO FOOTBALL TALK'

Simms' QB Countdown Continues Today with Next Tier - 'Escaped from New York' - and Culminates with the Top Five QBs on Monday, June 9; In-Depth Breakdowns for Each Ranking Weekly on Chris Simms Unbuttoned Podcast 'I don't see a ton of issues physically but it's his [lack of] feel and experience, just having more of a backyard sense.' – Simms on Seahawks' Sam Darnold 'His arm is crazy strong, he's versatile, he can throw off his back foot, sidearm, anything you want. That is also one of his problems.' – Simms on Raiders' Geno Smith STAMFORD, Conn. – May 28, 2025 – NBC Sports' Chris Simms continues his list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast and on 'PFT Live' today, featuring 2025 Pro Bowler Sam Darnold of the Seahawks and 2022 AP Comeback Player of the Year Geno Smith of the Raiders, who are both entering their first seasons with their respective teams. This year's countdown features a new format, with Simms focusing on tiers and groups of quarterbacks as opposed to specific numeric rankings until the later rounds. Continuing the countdown, Simms unveiled his quarterbacks ranked in the next tier today, with QBs in the 'Escaped from New York' tier. Continuing today and culminating Monday, June 9 with his top five quarterbacks, Simms will unveil a group of quarterbacks on each Chris Simms Unbuttoned episode and discuss his rankings on 'PFT Live' with Mike Florio. The rankings will continue next Monday, June 2, on the next episode of Chris Simms Unbuttoned. The following are highlights from this week's edition of Chris Simms Unbuttoned: Escaped from New York Sam Darnold, Seattle Seahawks 'A lot of good here. His season started off on a really high note throwing the ball all over the field and you went, 'Wow!' The good is his incredibly quick release; really gifted short-to-intermediate thrower of the football because he can get it out so quick. He's got more power in his arm than I think he gets credit for. This year, he got better at deep ball throwing. A lot of the things I'm going to talk about negatively with Sam Darnold is experience related. He was so spoiled by (Vikings head coach) Kevin O'Connell and the offense earlier in the year that when he got to the latter part of the year, those first reads weren't always open every time like the first few weeks. His internal clock, because of some of the big moments, was a little thrown off. I don't see a ton of issues physically but it's his [lack of] feel and experience, just having more of a backyard sense.' Geno Smith, Las Vegas Raiders 'This is a hard one….I don't think it was his best year but let me tell you this, with Geno Smith, the physical ability is real. His arm is crazy strong, he's versatile, he can throw off his back foot, sidearm, anything you want. That is also one of his problems though, because, like Darnold with his first read, Smith is not too different in that way. He has more confidence in his arm and throwing into tight windows than Darnold but that gets him in trouble. He puts the ball where he wants to, but he's taking too many chances. You see that in his worst games and his worst moments. That's what it always came down to. There has to be a better 'get out of jail' plan with Geno Smith. As a quarterback, it's your job to go and attack, but if all fails, you need to know where you're going to get the ball to keep the team in a good position.' Simms' QB Countdown Continues Today with Next Four Tiers - 'Young Mysteries,' 'Clock's Ticking,' 'Still on the Pot,' and 'Ready Rookie' - and Culminates with the Top Five QBs on Monday, June 9; In-Depth Breakdowns for Each Ranking Weekly on Chris Simms Unbuttoned Podcast 'I don't think there's a system out there that Cam Ward can't run. I'm not sold.' – Simms on New York Giants' Russell Wilson 'I think he fits exactly how Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings want to play.' – Simms on Vikings' J.J. McCarthy STAMFORD, Conn. – May 21, 2025 – NBC Sports' Chris Simms continues his list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast and on 'PFT Live' today, headlined by 2025 NFL Draft No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward of the Titans, 10-time Pro Bowler Russell Wilson of the Giants, and 2021 first round pick Justin Fields of the Jets. This year's countdown features a new format, with Simms focusing on tiers and groups of quarterbacks as opposed to specific numeric rankings until the later rounds. Continuing the countdown, Simms unveiled his quarterbacks ranked in the next four tiers today, with QBs in the 'Young Mysteries,' 'Clock's Ticking,' 'Still on the Pot,' and 'Ready Rookie' tiers. Continuing today and culminating Monday, June 19 with his top five quarterbacks, Simms will unveil a group of quarterbacks on each Chris Simms Unbuttoned episode and discuss his rankings on 'PFT Live' with Mike Florio. The rankings will continue next Wednesday, May 28, on the next episode of Chris Simms Unbuttoned. The following are highlights from this week's edition of Chris Simms Unbuttoned: Ready Rookie Cam Ward, Tennessee Titans 'I don't think there's a system out there that Cam Ward can't run. I don't really see many weaknesses with his game. You're starting to hear from (Titans head coach) Brian Callahan that they think they can do anything with this guy…The way he played at Miami, the way he sees the field, the decisions he makes, I don't have any worries about his limitations in the NFL. He's as good as you're going to see throwing on the run, in the same category as Lamar [Jackson], [Patrick] Mahomes, Josh Allen, Caleb Williams. He can throw any ball you want. He's got a great, natural feel. I'm really excited to watch him play this year and I think he'll be the best rookie quarterback in this class.' Still on the Pot Daniel Jones, Indianapolis Colts 'I think a little more of Daniel Jones than the public does. I don't know if he was ever the No. 6 pick in the [2019] NFL Draft, but also the hate swung too far. His physical abilities are better than people realize and the decision-making is better than people realize…Is he perfect? No. He doesn't take advantage of things that are the big, explosive plays down the field. Those, to me, are the issues. But where I'll always defend him is that every quarterback who's come in to play for the Giants the last few years, they can't last more than 10 plays before they're knocked out of the game – and there he was, taking shots and hanging in there. I still think there's untapped potential here.' Justin Fields, New York Jets 'I'm not giving up on Justin Fields. I don't think it's ever going to look as pretty as we want it to look. There are some 'wow' moments, but there are still too many throws that are missed, although he's gotten better at it every year. He's a pretty good decision-maker and, of course, we know the athleticism and what he brings to the table there…You hope that the Jets can formulate the offense around him. He's not going to lead the NFL in QB rating, but you're going to hope that he takes care of the ball, makes some explosive plays with his arm, and makes a handful of runs that are extremely dangerous that help out the team.' Clock's Ticking Russell Wilson, New York Giants 'This is his last chance to be a starter in the NFL. I'm not sold. He is the starter, but for how long? … When, by all due accounts, we know [Giants head coach] Brian Daboll likes [rookie QB] Jaxson Dart, and that's never a great thing for the old veteran quarterback. Certainly, Russell Wilson, the one thing you like is the deep ball throwing and he's played a lot of big-game football. He's not going to make major mistakes more times than not. It's just not always apparent to the people watching on TV and you don't get to see the whole field that way. I think that's what you see here again.' Young Mysteries Bryce Young, Carolina Panthers 'I'm going to keep fighting and I'm going to show everybody that they're wrong. Bryce Young took some steps in the right direction last year. He wasn't good early on and again, there's still some parts of his game as far as being comfortable in the pocket, maybe getting the ball out of his hands quicker than he should just because he doesn't want to take a hit or feeling pressure and letting it affect his decision that you certainly saw that can affect him, especially earlier in the year. But when he got back in when [Panthers QB] Andy Dalton got a little banged up, you saw a totally different guy. The biggest thing that jumped out to me is what I just said - comfort in the pocket. I think early in the year he'd have been like, 'I've got to get the ball out. It's already been two seconds.' I saw more understanding of his offense and defense.' J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings 'I have more confidence in his ability to translate to the NFL than I do Bryce Young. Physical ability is a cool ability. I've seen that in college. He had to make more NFL-type throws than Bryce Young did. He's played an NFL-style game in college [at Michigan] under [former Michigan/current Chargers head coach] Jim Harbaugh. Again, it's not always easy to play for a guy that's like, 'Hey, you might go the series with barely throwing the football and then we come back another series and we want you to go five-for-five even though you're in no rhythm at all. But now we want you to make five big-time throws because we're losing.' That's not easy to play quarterback that way. I think he fits exactly how [Viking head coach] Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings want to play.' To listen to the full player breakdowns on Chris Simms Unbuttoned, click here. -NBC SPORTS-

ANTHONY RICHARDSON, JOE FLACCO, AND JAMEIS WINSTON LEAD OFF CHRIS SIMMS' TOP QUARTERBACK COUNTDOWN, NOW ON 'CHRIS SIMMS UNBUTTONED' AND 'PRO FOOTBALL TALK'

Simms' Top QB Countdown Kicks Off Today with First Three Tiers and Culminates with the Top Five QBs on Monday, June 9; In-Depth Breakdowns for Each Ranking Weekly on Chris Simms Unbuttoned Podcast 'This is going to be a huge offseason for him. His down the field throwing is by far the best thing he does…but he's got to grow and be more mature as a leader with the franchise.' – Simms on Colts' Richardson 'We know his arm is super talented. If you watch his highlights, you'll go, 'Is this one of the best players in football?' But if you watch his lowlights, you'll go, 'Is he still in the NFL?'' – Simms on New York Giants' Winston 'I think he is a guy that could see a resurrection to his career like Sam Darnold did by going to San Francisco if the opportunity arises to where he gets to play.' – Simms on 49ers' Mac Jones STAMFORD, Conn. – May 19, 2025 – Over the course of the next month, NBC Sports' Chris Simms will unveil his list of the top quarterbacks in the NFL on the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast and on 'PFT Live.' Highlighting Simms' initial rankings are 2023 first round pick Anthony Richardson of the Colts, Joe Flacco of the Browns, and Jameis Winston of the Giants. This year's countdown will feature a new format, with Simms focusing on tiers and groups of quarterbacks as opposed to specific numeric rankings until the later rounds. Beginning the countdown, Simms unveiled his quarterbacks ranked in the first three tiers today, with QBs in the 'Wow or Whoa?', 'Backup Supremes,' and 'Caretakers' tiers. Beginning today and culminating Monday, June 19 with his top five quarterbacks, Simms will unveil a group of quarterbacks on each Chris Simms Unbuttoned episode and discuss his rankings on 'PFT Live' with Mike Florio. The rankings will continue this Wednesday, May 21, on the next episode of Chris Simms Unbuttoned. The following are highlights from this week's edition of Chris Simms Unbuttoned: Wow or Whoa? Anthony Richardson, Indianapolis Colts 'This is going to be a huge offseason for him. Can he become a more polished passer? His down the field throwing is by far the best thing he does…but when it's a 5-yard or an 8-yard or a 10-yard throw, it's less than 50% whether he'll hit you or not. They're bad misses, too, and the mechanics are different every time he does it…He's got to grow and be more mature as a leader with the franchise.' Backup Supremes Joe Flacco, Cleveland Browns 'Do I really have to say it with Joe Flacco? We know he can go 12-12 for 280 yards and you can go, 'Look at that arm!' And then the next twelve dropbacks, you can go, 'He fumbled three times, he threw three interceptions, and three more of those should've been intercepted.' There's some real greatness, but some real inconsistencies in how he plays the game.' Malik Willis, Green Bay Packers 'He still has untapped potential and is going up in a big way. There's a reason Jordan Love kept rushing back from injury…Another guy who can make some 'wow' throws and runs, but he just doesn't do it all consistent yet. But it's all going in the right direction, you saw that last year. It got better every time he went in the game. That was a great trade by Green Bay.' Jameis Winston, New York Giants 'We know his arm is super talented. If you watch his highlights, you'll go, 'Is this one of the best players in football?' But if you watch his lowlights, you'll go, 'Is he still in the NFL?' You just don't trust him game after game to take care of the football. But he can have some games where you'll go, 'You're a backup quarterback and we're playing a good team today, we can run the whole offense and we might be able to win it with you.'' Marcus Mariota, Washington Commanders 'He throws the ball well, but every throw is the same throw. He has no side arm, no arm angles…his throwing, over time, gets exposed for not being 'next level' to be a starter, but he comes in as backup and can run the offense and make some plays. He can rip off a 50-yard run and throw it 60 for a touchdown.' Caretakers Mac Jones, San Francisco 49ers 'I'm still not giving up on Mac Jones. A lot of the things we said about [49ers QB] Brock Purdy hold true to Mac Jones if he was in a situation with [49ers head coach] Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers. You'd go, 'He looks pretty good.' I think he is a guy that could see a resurrection to his career like Sam Darnold did by going to San Francisco if the opportunity arises to where he gets to play…So that's where I still look at Mac Jones, I don't think he's as physically talented as Sam Darnold, but Mac Jones' ability to read defenses, take on a lot of offense a little bit like Brock Purdy, and feel like being a step ahead of the defense is elite starter type of stuff.' Andy Dalton, Carolina Panthers 'The best quarterback to mentor a young quarterback out of this group? Andy Dalton, as we see, has got no ego and he's going to be willing to do that. And we're seeing him do that with Bryce Young.' Jarrett Stidham, Denver Broncos 'Jarett Stidham, to me, is still a guy that I look at at times where I go, 'Man, the way he throws the ball and all that is a tick better than the rest of this group.' But it's, again, experience and will he get that chance to play? I don't know. I doubt it sitting behind [Broncos starting QB] Bo Nix.' Tyrod Taylor, New York Jets 'Tyrod's been around a lot. He's been around a lot of great quarterbacks, different systems. He is a total pro. There's a reason teams sign him year after year to be the backup. And there's more physical ability there than people realize, too. He's another guy I'd want in a two-minute drill.' Gardner Minshew, Kansas City Chiefs 'I would trust him the most [out of this tier] with the ball in their hand late in the game. Experience, accuracy…You need somebody that you can just go, 'Hey, he's going to drop back, he's going to see the field the right way, and he's going to make the appropriate throw.' I think all of them can do that. But, Gardner Minshew, out of the ones I said, can maybe do the most backyard type of stuff in that situation.' Chris Simms loves Broncos draft pick RJ Harvey

Chris Simms loves Broncos draft pick RJ Harvey The Denver Broncos selected running back RJ Harvey in the second round of the 2025 NFL draft last week. Harvey rushed for 1,577 yards and 22 touchdowns in his senior year with UCF in 2024. Chris Simms recently talked about Harvey on his show, Chris Simms Unbuttoned, and he described how he enjoyed the Broncos picking Harvey. The words Simms used to describe Harvey were 'thick as hell.' Harvey is listed at 5-8, 205 pounds, and although he's short in height, he makes up for it in weight and running style. Simms even compared his body type to J.K. Dobbins, the former Ohio State standout. He also said he loves his legs and his thick thighs. Yes, Simms is describing RJ Harvey. While the clip is just over eight minutes long, it's worth your time. Check out the entire clip below. Simms was a quarterback in the NFL from 2003-2010, including a stint with the Broncos in 2009. He now works for NBC. Related: These 25 celebrities are Broncos fans.
