Veteran coach Chris White bids for KZN Athletics presidency

Veteran athletics coach Chris White is ready to take on the established order at KwaZulu-Natal Athletics. Image: Supplied Veteran athletics coach and educator Christopher White has announced that he will challenge for the presidency of KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) when nominations open, citing a need for reform, accountability, and a renewed commitment to athlete development. White, based in Pietermaritzburg and known for his athlete-centred approach, said he had considered leaving the sport altogether in frustration, but was ultimately inspired to act for the sake of the young athletes he mentors – including his own children. "I've been involved in athletics for nearly 20 years and, in recent years – particularly the seven years under Sello Mokoena and the last four under Steve Mkasi – things have gone from bad to worse,' according to 42-year-old White. 'I reached the point where I contemplated leaving the sport. 'But I have children who love athletics, and it's difficult for me to sit by and tell them, and the other young athletes I coach, that we must act with integrity, while the very people I work with in the federation appear to lack it.' White explained that he originally approached several clubs in the province to suggest candidates for the upcoming elections, with an eye on unseating Mkasi. 'The clubs came back and said, 'Chris, we want you to do it'. I agreed, but only if others would also stand for positions. "No single person can save a province – it's going to take a major collective effort. Thankfully, many said they would.' Video Player is loading. He is also a facilitator and moderator in the national coach education programme run by SASCOC. 'I've spent my career building systems that work,' White stated. 'KZN is home to extraordinary talent, but we need consistent structures that retain athletes and support coaches at every level.' 'Coach education is the backbone of national success,' he added. 'You can't expect world-class results from environments that are under-resourced and unsupported.' Beyond coaching, White plays a leadership role within the KZN Sports Confederation Coaches Committee. Meanwhile, KZNA president Mkasi, now completing his four-year term, also confirmed his intention to run for re-election. "I congratulate White and everybody else who is nominated to contest the upcoming KZNA elections. Elections are about choice and people who are the constituency of KZNA will vote for their board and commissions as they believe will take KZNA forward," Mkasi said, in a statement. He praised the collective efforts of the current board that has "worked tirelessly to improve the financial status of KZNA from a negative bank balance to four years of financial stability". "I cannot find what is bad to worse between the era prior to me becoming president and this current election cycle. I strongly believe in the idiom that you don't change anything that is not broken," Mkasi continued. "The board that I lead and I could be victims of our own successes. Our financial position as KZNA is known by all our members. "I have a feeling that some may be tempted to stand for positions with ulterior motives for the financial reserves. I would, therefore, urge the clubs to consider where KZNA was in 2018 to where it is in 2025 ... "I am standing and ready to propel KZNA forward from the foundation we have laid." The KZNA elections will take place a week after the Comrades Marathon on June 8. KZNA confirmed that the nominations list will be released on May 23.

Immigration enforcement leaves Massachusetts nonprofit concerned and staff members frightened

As the deadline for an estimated 500,000 Haitians with Temporary Protected Status looms, the future for employees at a Marshfield, Massachusetts nonprofit hangs in the balance. "We are looking at the potential of losing 84 of our staff — that's 11% of our workforce," explained Chris White, President and CEO of Road to Responsibility. The nonprofit supports adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Staff members afraid to drive to work Anita Goncalves, a hiring manager, told WBZ-TV some of her staff "are afraid of even driving to work." On Aug. 3, the Trump administration has plans to end TPS, the deportation protection program for Haitians that allowed them to seek refuge in the U.S. due to unsafe conditions in Haiti. "These are folks that our government allowed to enter the country, have vetted and have multiple-year work authorizations," said White. Impact on nonprofit could be devastating If their legal status is revoked, White said the impact on his organization could be devastating because he said these are not just employees. "They provide the consistency and dedicated support that our members need to thrive," said White. "The way that our staffing works with our individuals is like family," Goncalves added. But now, fear has silenced some of those voices. And though some are hesitant to speak out, White is clear: "For me, it's not political. What it is, is it's human. The issue is too big and too important to just be silent about it."

Piedmont Triad fire departments help fight western North Carolina wildfires

ARCHDALE, N.C. (WGHP) — Across western North Carolina, wildfires are raging as all 100 North Carolina counties remain under a burn ban. Crews from East Side Fire Department in Randolph County shared a video of their efforts to put out the flames in Polk County over the weekend. Polk County and Henderson County leaders are calling for everyone living in the affected areas to evacuate their homes. Nearly 3,000 acres burned with no containment recorded by the forestry service. Now, it's all hands on deck to help put out those fires. 'It's really hard work … They need all the help they can get,' Guil-Rand Fire Department Assistant Chief of Operations Chris White said. The GRFD got a notice from the Office of State Fire Marshal on Monday asking for more manpower and resources to help fight the fires in western North Carolina. The GRFD said they quickly responded. They sent a lieutenant and a firefighter up the very next day to Polk County along with a truck with tools to help fight the fire. White said the Black Cove fire is burning on extremely steep land, which makes it hard to contain. 'The low humidity is contributing and the … high winds also … The terrain … makes it difficult to take care of,' White said. Another fire department from the Triad also went to help. A team from the East Side Fire Department was deployed over the weekend, working a 25-hour shift. Fire Chief Eric Hoffman said the destruction left behind by Hurricane Helene last year is making firefighting even harder. 'The forest floor is littered with downed trees and heavy debris, which, coupled with the steep terrain, makes navigating the woods and firefighting extremely difficult. It also provides a seemingly unending amount of fuel for the fire to burn hot and fast. We saw this firsthand,' Hoffman said. 'We ask that you keep the firefighters and residents of Polk County in your prayers. They have had a tough several months with Hurricane Helene and now the wildfires. What we observed while there are tough and resilient people who are doing their best to support each other and make the most out of a bad situation. Hopefully, some significant rains will come to the area to help douse the fires and lower the danger to lives and property.' GRFD firefighters are committed to staying in Polk County through March 31. They may have to send additional crews if conditions don't improve. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
