The security hall in Manchester Airport's new Terminal 2 is part of a 10-year, £1.3billion project that is now nearing its completion. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Manchester Airport's new security hall has opened as part of a major renovation The new scanners will eventually mean that travellers will not have to remove liquids from their bags. The airport is currently preparing for a busy week as families flee the country for the May half-term. Over one million passengers are expected to fly into or out of the airport during the school break. The airport's transformation project started back in 2015, with the first milestone being hit back in 2021 when the new extension to Terminal 2 opened. Since, the older part of Terminal 2 has been redeveloped. The new security hall also follows new check-in desks that opened a few weeks ago. The Terminal is expected to be fully open by the end of this year, when a new departure lounge, shops and bars open - in addition to pier 2, which will house extra gates. Manchester Airport Managing Director Chris Woodroofe said: "Seeing the first passengers go into the new security hall is very exciting for everyone here, as it was one of the major milestones we have been working towards since first announcing the transformation 10 years ago "Here at Manchester Airport, we are proud to connect the North to the world and as we take these huge steps towards completing our £1.3bn transformation it means we're connecting those passengers via an airport terminal that can rival any across Europe. "The new security hall is opening just in time for the May half-term break which is one of the busiest weeks of the year for us – I'm looking forward to hearing what our passengers think of it." Belfast Airport £100million upgrade In total, the security hall houses 10 new lanes, five of which are already open. Currently passengers do still need to remove liquids from their back when going through security and this is because different airports are introducing the scanners at different rates. Therefore, to avoid confusion, the old rules of taking liquids out of bags remains in place. Manchester Airport also recently announced a multi-million pound investment in Terminal 3, which will free-up space and improve the passenger experience. The project includes remodelling the entrance to the terminal, the security hall and the departure lounge, which will create extra space for passengers and for new retailers. There will be a new 500 seat bar area with airfield views and an expanded dining area with 200 extra seats too. The new T2 has replaced T1 which will eventually close. Once the renovation work on T2 is complete, which is likely to be this year, T1 will close completely and merge into T3. T3 first opened in 1989 and mainly operates for domestic flights. Another major UK airport, multi-billion-pound expansion was also recently approved. Plus, a tiny UK airport gets new 1-hour flights to stunning British Isle that's warmer than UK with Caribbean-style beaches.

Major UK airport's £1.3bn mega upgrade will transform 'hated' terminal
As part of an epic 10-year programme to transform its hub, one major UK airport has revealed its latest multi-million pound investment plan to turn around a controversial terminal One of the UK's busiest airports has finally revealed plans to transform its terminal which Brits have branded 'truly abysmal'. Handling around 30 million passengers every year, Manchester Airport is the largest of its kind in the north of England - with around 261 flights leaving the hub daily. However, last year the airport came bottom in Which?'s league tables, after the consumer brand analysed responses from almost 7,000 members. Manchester Airport's Terminal 3 received a measly 37 per cent approval rate - with travellers giving it just two stars for queues at the checkin-desk, bag drop, and passport control. The tiny terminal, which mainly deals with low-cost airlines like Ryanair, only managed to scrape one star for queues at security, level of seating available, staff, and prices in shops, bars and restaurants. On social media, it's clear the terminal's reputation isn't much better. "Manchester Airport Terminal 3 is the depths of hell," one person moaned on X (formerly Twitter). Another agreed, scathing: "Manchester Terminal 3, you are awful." A third added: "Terminal 3 at Manchester Airport is truly abysmal," while a fourth dubbed it the 'worst' terminal in the UK. However, last week (May 13, 2025) Manchester Airport revealed a huge multi-million pound investment to revamp Terminal 3, as part of its £1.3 billion transformation programme. The mega face-lift, which aims to free-up space and improve the passenger experience, will see a new entrance with 'more space, easier access and better facilities'. The terminal will also welcome brand new security equipment and 40 per cent more seating capacity in the departure lounge, along with new shops and food and drink outlets, located both airside and landside. Grabbing a pint or meal pre-flight will also get a whole lot easier, as the terminal revamp will include a new 500-seat bar area with airfield views, as well as a dining area expansion that will see 200 extra seats. Terminal 3's expansion will see Terminal 1 (as it currently is) close for good as it merges together. Terminal 2, which has already had a major revamp, will also double its size as part of the 10-year investment plan. "The work we've done in Terminal 2 is there for all to see – and we've already won the prestigious Prix Versailles award for its architecture and design. But until now we haven't talked about our plans for Terminal 3," said Manchester Airport managing director Chris Woodroofe. "Moving to a two-terminal airport is giving us a great opportunity to use some of the existing Terminal 1 space to increase the footprint of Terminal 3. We're doing that as well as making some all round improvements to Terminal 3 – so passengers will enjoy new security technology, more space, more seats, new retail and food and drink, and more. It's another exciting step towards delivering an even better experience for our passengers and I can't wait to see it progress." External work on the new pier on Terminal 2 – the second pier – has also taken a significant step closer to completion. The piers on the terminal are structures that extend from the main building and are home to the gates where passengers embark and disembark.

IndiGo's first ever route connecting Mumbai to Manchester
MUMBAI: IndiGo has announced its first-ever long-haul route connecting Mumbai with Manchester, United Kingdom, on July 1 and Mumbai to Amsterdam, Netherlands, from July 2. The airline will use its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to operate three weekly flights on the route. This will make IndiGo the only airline offering direct connectivity between India and the Northern UK. Erstwhile Jet Airways operated the Boeing 777 on Mumbai to Manchester route before its operations were shut down in 2019. At present, the passengers must break their journey. The Mumbai to Manchester flights will operate on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Mumbai to Amsterdam flights will operate on Wednesday Friday, and Sunday. Pieter Elbers, chief executive officer of IndiGo, said the airline's long-haul foray marks a pivotal moment in their global expansion journey. 'The Netherlands and India share a strong and thriving bilateral relationship, and this new non-stop, thrice-weekly service between Mumbai and Amsterdam will only deepen the growing ties between the two nations. We are closely working with Schiphol Airport to provide customers with our quintessential seamless and hassle-free travel experience.' This service by IndiGo will thereby further enhance connectivity between India and the UK, fostering stronger economic, educational, and cultural ties.
