Berlin Conference Reaffirms Support for Libyan-Led Political Process

The International Follow-up Committee on Libya convened a high-level meeting in Berlin on Friday to assess the country's fragile political and security situation. Co-chaired by the UN's Special Representative for Libya, Hanna Tetteh, and German Special Envoy to Libya, Christian Buck, the meeting brought together key regional and international actors committed to supporting peace and stability in Libya. In their joint statement, participants reiterated full support for a Libyan-led political process under United Nations auspices. They reaffirmed their respect for Libya's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, and firmly rejected any foreign interference that could derail the path toward peace. The committee expressed growing concern over the stalled implementation of the 2020 ceasefire agreement and the deepening institutional and political divide. Delegates warned that continued delays in the political process, deteriorating public services, and the absence of unified governance threaten to undermine long-term stability. The recent escalation of violence in Tripoli, which claimed civilian lives, was strongly condemned. Participants called for an immediate end to the use of force in political disputes and urged all parties to respect international humanitarian law. The formation of two key committees, one focused on ceasefire monitoring and the other on security arrangements, was welcomed as a step in the right direction. The committee also praised the African Union's engagement in supporting Libya's national reconciliation efforts and emphasized the importance of holding accountable those who obstruct political progress. Looking ahead, the committee committed to regular follow-up meetings and the reactivation of the four international working groups focused on political dialogue, security reform, economic recovery, and electoral preparation. The shared goal remains a unified political process leading to free, fair, and inclusive national elections. Tags: BerlinConferencelibyaPolitical ProcessStability
