Putting the fun in maths

Polymath founders have their game being used in half of New Zealand's primary schools. Sophie and Christian Silver were looking for a solution to kids' anxiety to try doing maths work when they landed on creating a game. Polymath is a website and app game that lets kids control a character and explore a virtual world, with their own island. Players interact with and build new objects, but to continue the game there are maths questions that need answering along the way. It's spread to schools largely through word of mouth, and as it is free, teachers do not need to make a budget request to get their classes started on the game. As well as New Zealand schools, Polymath is being picked up by schools as far as the US, UK and Canada. Sophie and Christian Silver speak to Kathryn about the inspiration behind the game and where they want to take it. Photo: Supplied by Polymath

CT man allegedly going 80 mph in a 35 mph zone in Litchfield charged with DUI

A man was charged with DUI after he was pulled over for allegedly going more than double the speed limit in Litchfield early Friday in a pickup truck with the wrong license plate on it. The traffic stop occurred on Bissell Road after troopers at 12:48 a.m. spotted a driver speeding and followed the vehicle, reportedly clocking it at about 80 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to Connecticut State Police. Once the driver pulled over, troopers found that the license plate on the Chevy Silverado was registered to a Ford F-150, state police said. They also noticed the vehicle's tail light was not properly functioning. The driver was identified as 24-year-old Christian Silver of Morris, according to state police. Troopers alleged that his eyes were bloodshot and glossy and that the smell of alcohol emanated from the vehicle, state police said. According to state police, Silver told troopers the vehicle was his and that it was not properly insured. He was asked to take field sobriety testing, which he reportedly failed, state police said. Silver was arrested on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle without minimum insurance, improper use of registration plates, traveling unreasonably fast and improper rear lamps. He was released on a $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Torrington Superior Court on Feb. 13.
