Warning to parents over 'sharenting' social media trend putting children at risk of danger

Social media is a great way to connect, but oversharing can be a risk for all involved Social media is inescapable in this day and age- around 1.3 billion photos are shared on Instagram every day, and there are around 600 million monthly users on X. But sharing pictures and information online can be dangerous, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence. It's vital to be careful about what you're posting online, particularly if you have children. And AI experts at AIPRM have shared some information on why you should avoid oversharing on social media. ‌ Here are five risks associated with posting pictures and information online, and what you can do to keep yourself and your children safe. ‌ 1. Dangers of oversharing about your child Often known as 'sharenting', it is becoming increasingly common for parents to share screeds of information about their children via social media. But Christoph advises parents to be vigilant: 'Cyber crime is rising rapidly, and exposing your child's details online could see them fall victim to fraud or other crimes. "If you want to share images or details on your child's activities, it is always best to do this in private group chats with people you trust. I would always advise avoiding sharing this information on social media, due to the risks involved." 2. Identity theft All social media pages and accounts host a gold mine of personal information for criminals such as names, date of birth, home location, places of work, and even the details of our family, friends and kids. ‌ Christoph advises: 'The host of readily available personal information on social media has made it even easier for criminals to carry out identity theft, and with the rise of AI's capabilities, this is even quicker to do. "By combining real data with fabricated details, AI can be used to generate realistic IDs, official documents, or utility bills. This makes identity theft much harder to detect. "That's why it's crucial to think carefully about what you share online - not just to protect your own privacy, but also the security of your family and friends, who could be targeted by a fake version of you.' ‌ 3. Social engineering and financial scams Social engineering often involves attackers creating fraudulent social media profiles and using these to impersonate a trusted or legitimate individual or organisation. Through this, they can psychologically manipulate victims into sharing information or clicking on links that are unsafe and contain malware or scams. ‌ Christoph states: "Always be cautious when engaging with people on social media, and if they claim to be someone you know, be sure to ask them personal questions that only they would know the answer to.' 4. Deepfakes and voice cloning Scammers need just three seconds of audio to clone a person's voice, and with so many videos available on social media, it is becoming even easier for criminals to generate voice clones. Similarly, the wide array of selfies on social media has fuelled AI- powered scams. ‌ From a single image of your face, fraudsters can use AI to create a full photo, complete with a natural looking background and other aspects that appear authentic. 'Deepfakes are becoming widespread, and with our voices and images often available on social media, millions are at risk of becoming victims," says the expert. "To protect yourself, make sure that those you follow on social media and allow to view your content are people you know and trust. Having a publicly open profile increases your risk of being targeted. ‌ "If you think you have been a victim of a deepfake, contact your local fraud centre as soon as possible to report it.' 5. Reputation damage Oversharing on social media also carries the risk of personal or professional reputation damage. Engaging with the wrong things on social media can create a negative image of the user. ‌ The AI expert says: "Many people have fallen into the trap of engaging with this content, whether it be an AI generated image, or a fake article. "Always fact check any news or sources you see on social media via trusted and reputable sites, as unverified online information could be fake, and may even include fraudulent links." Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph joins News 2 Today

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCBD) – Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph is trading in the weekend weather to deliver the Lowcountry's morning forecast. Christoph has been anchoring the weekend weather at News 2 since joining the team in June 2023. During that time Christoph has kept the Lowcountry safe during multiple severe weather events such as dangerous tornadoes, flooding, tropical systems that threatened the coast, and even a rare winter storm. He now joins longtime morning anchor Octavia Mitchell as they deliver the day's top headlines and weather outlook on News 2 Today. 'I'm looking forward to many wonderful mornings ahead as we begin a new chapter on News 2 Today,' said Mitchell. 'Jed is a focused and experienced meteorologist with a wealth of weather knowledge to help keep our viewers informed and safe.' A native of the Lowcountry, Christoph grew up watching News 2 and learning, even at an early age, from Storm Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler. He understands the region's landscape, the dangers severe weather can bring to the area, and what it means to get the forecast right every time. 'I knew from the first time I saw Jed's work that we had to have him on our team,' said Fowler. 'He brings so much to the table. He grew up here, knows his meteorology, and is an amazing photographer and videographer. He also is an avid surfer. Jed is the perfect person to get you out the door in the morning with what you need to know when it comes to weather.' Christoph's passion for weather and beautiful photography often come together during his weekly series, Jed's Journals, which highlights the Lowcountry's beauty while offering a new view to areas people around the community can explore themselves. You'll also see his timelapse video and stunning images during his daily forecasts. 'I am so thrilled to join the morning team and bring some fresh energy to the start of everyone's day… in the city I grew up in! It's an honor to step into this role. Filling Josh Marthers' shoes is no small task… He set the bar high, creating an incredible legacy here. My approach is to deliver the reliable weather forecasts that the Lowcountry expects from Storm Team 2, with a twist… Surf reports and forecasts when the waves are rolling, tailored forecasts for the outdoor lovers, and some of my best photography to highlight what really makes this place special. I want everyone to feel informed, inspired, and ready to tackle the day ahead!' Wake up with Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph and the News 2 Today team every morning from 4:30 a.m. until 7 a.m. on WCBD and at 7 a.m. on The Lowcountry CW. Severe storms, strong wind possible Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A strong cold front will sweep across the southeast this weekend bringing severe weather to much of the region, including the Lowcountry. 'The storm system impacting many of the Gulf Coast states will impact us Sunday,' said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph. 'Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected, with the main threat being gusty straight-line winds.' Forecasters with the National Weather Service in Charleston said winds 60 mph and higher, isolated tornadoes, and hail are possible for some areas of the Lowcountry; however, the risk for hail, tornadoes, and heavy rain is low. Christoph said high winds and the potential for wind damage are the main concern Sunday morning and into the afternoon. 'The rain should clear the coast late Sunday, leaving us day and cooler on St. Patrick's Day,' he said. 'Storm Team 2 will be monitoring the radar trends for Sunday.' Maresca on coping without Jackson, first-choice Jorgensen and Brighton

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been speaking to the media before Friday's Premier League game away at Brighton (20:00 GMT).Here are the key lines from his news conference:Nicolas Jackson, Romeo Lavia and Benoit Badiashile will likely be out until after the March international break. Marc Guiu will be out for "a while" with a hamstring injury. Reece James missing the 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton last weekend was planned and the defender is "OK".Maresca spoke on whether Christopher Nkunku can replace Jackson, stating: "Christoph could be one of the solutions but he's not the only solution. I consider Christoph a very important player. He can try to help us."Asked what the other solutions are, Maresca said: "We are trying to find different solutions, can be Christoph or a different kind of player. When you don't have a proper nine who can be a threat always you have to change. Pedro [Neto], Noni [Madueke] or even Tyrique [George] can try and maybe be the solution. Jadon [Sancho] maybe with different skills."Maresca confirmed Filip Jorgensen is Chelsea's Premier League goalkeeper "at the moment", adding: "The Filip solution was also to give Robert some time to recover mentally and physically. The idea is not to go game-to-game. I spoke to Robert before West Ham. They know in this moment the situation."On the Blues' dip in form and cup exits after a fine start to to the season: "Our journey in the Premier League and Conference League has been fantastic. We will try and finish in the best way we can. Don't forget in the last two years Chelsea have not been top four and this season all the time in the top four. This shows everyone we are in the right direction. This club belongs in the Champions League."Maresca reasserted the club did not specify a target for this season, stating: "The club never said the target was top four. When I arrived the target was in two years we play Champions League."On facing the Seagulls for the second time in a week: "I expect a similar one. In all the games they try to be quite aggressive. I expect a very similar game. It's fresh in your mind the way they attack and defend. You know what they do and try to do. It's probably better to face them immediately."
