‘Frankenstein' teaser: Guillermo del Toro's next monstrous creation unleashed

Three-time Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro's longtime passion project is showing its first signs of life. The Shape of Water writer-director unveiled his take on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein during Netflix's Tudum event on Saturday, showing off an eerie first teaser trailer. More from GoldDerby 'The impossible crime': 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery' sets release date - watch a sneak peek 'Squid Game' Season 3 trailer drops, teases tragic endgame: Everything to know about the final season of Netflix's biggest show Comedians get serious: how the personal lives, loss and growth shaped their game-changing Netflix specials The film stars Oscar Isaac as the titular mad scientist, Jacob Elordi as his signature creation, and Mia Goth as the doctor's fiancée, Elizabeth. Rounding out the cast are two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz and Game of Thrones alums Charles Dance, David Bradley, and Ralph Ineson. The atmospheric two-minute, 23-second clip features Isaac in voiceover recounting "the memory of my evils" amid shots of his Victor Frankenstein robbing graves and desecrating corpses to assemble his creature. "In seeking life," the scientist intones, "I created death." At the trailer's conclusion we catch a glimpse of the shrouded creature as it lays waste to a group of vigilantes and shouts, "Victor!" The project is one of two major Frankenstein film projects coming in the next year. Maggie Gyllenhaal's follow-up to The Lost Daughter, The Bride! starring Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, and Penélope Cruz, is set for release next March. Del Toro's adaptation, however, is one he has been talking about making for nearly 20 years, publicly declaring the Shelley novel to be his favorite book. Always a fan of monsters — especially those in the Universal canon — del Toro crafted an awards juggernaut riffing on The Creature From the Black Lagoon with The Shape of Water. More recently, he crossed over into the world of stop-motion animation with Pinocchio, another Netflix production, which earned him his third Oscar for Best Animated Film. Before that, he explored some of the more mystical corners of noir with Nightmare Alley, starring Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, and Rooney Mara. Guillermo del Toro's ‘Frankenstein' Has Its Creepy First Trailer

The world's next hot monster is here. At its big Tudum event, Netflix released the first teaser trailer for Guillermo del Toro's latest film, Frankenstein. In it, audiences finally catch a glimpse of Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster. A monster that is scary, but in a way that makes death seem okay. Thankfully, that's juxtaposed with the type of gore and scope one expects from Del Toro. The Oscar-winning director of The Shape of Water, Pan's Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, Hellboy and others has been wanting to make his version of the classic Mary Shelley story for years now, and with the help of Oscar Isaac, Christoph Waltz, and Mia Goth, he's done just that. Here's the first trailer for Frankenstein. Though Frankenstein was produced and will live on Netflix, we certainly hope audiences have a chance to see it on a big screen. Guillermo del Toro is one of those filmmakers whose work begs to be seen in a theater, and Frankenstein looks to fit the bill once again. It's all there in the trailer—incredible sets, beautiful visual effects, stunning costumes, gruesome makeup, you name it. We're also very curious about where Frankenstein is going to fit into the awards cycle at the end of this year. With a cast and crew like this, you'd imagine Netflix is expecting Frankenstein to be a contender for all the major awards. And, frankly, fans like you and I expect the movie to be good enough to do so. However, a project like this, one that seems so incredible on paper, often doesn't meet those expectations. How could it? This is the ultimate monster story from the ultimate monster filmmaker! After seeing this trailer, though, we think maybe this will live up to its potential Frankenstein, directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Jacob Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, and Christoph Waltz, comes to Netflix in November.

Everything we know about Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein adaptation

Guillermo del Toro describes his upcoming Netflix adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, set for release in November 2025, as an "emotional story" rather than a horror film. The film stars Christoph Waltz as Dr. Pretorious, who seeks out Jacob Elordi's Frankenstein's Monster to continue Dr. Victor Frankenstein's experiments. Del Toro emphasizes the film's exploration of themes like fatherhood and being a son, aiming for a lyrical and emotional score in collaboration with composer Alexandre Desplat. Del Toro has been interested in the story since childhood, moved by the creature's innocence and viewing Mary Shelley's book as a powerful exploration of isolation. While filming in Scotland in August 2024, Del Toro humorously shared on X about staying in a haunted hotel room in Aberdeen, experiencing odd occurrences.

Renee Zellweger debuts a VERY different style as she's seen for first time in Only Murders in the Building

When Renée Zellweger is not in front of the cameras she's normally seen sporting athleisure attire and her beloved, ratty Texas Longhorns cap. But the 56-year-old actress looked like every bit the English equestrian while clad in a beige-knit turtleneck sweater, dressage jodhpurs, and riding boots while filming Only Murders in the Building in Manhattan on April 29. Renée sat on her director's chair between fellow new cast members Logan Lerman and Christoph Waltz, whom she excitedly chatted with on the Arconia set. On April 23, OMITB creator-star Steve Martin shared a snap of the camera crew where Zellweger could be seen dressed in the same exact costume in the monitor. The two-time Oscar winner was costumed in a blue neckerchief and matching slacks with her hair coiffed in a sixties flip while posing with co-stars and a couple of crew members on April 7. Renée's first official day on set was March 26, but her polished character is still a mystery in the 10-episode fifth season of Hulu hit show centered on solving Arconia doorman Lester's (Teddy Coluca) murder. Selena Gomez, Steve Martin, and Martin Short are said to earn well over $600K/episode to produce and star in the critically-acclaimed who-done-it. Martin Short's rumored girlfriend Meryl Streep is set to reprise her role as his onscreen girlfriend's Loretta Durkin as well as Michael Cyril Creighton as Arconia resident Howard Morris. Téa Leoni, Keegan-Michael Key, Beanie Feldstein, and Jermaine Fowler have also joined the SAG Award-winning ensemble for season five. Zellweger hasn't done a lot of work on TV aside from NBC miniseries The Thing About Pam in 2022, a failed Lifetime pilot Cinnamon Girl in 2012, and one episode of Fox animated sitcom King of the Hill in 2001. Earlier this year, the Big Picture Company co-founder reprised her role as the accident-prone TV producer in Michael Morris' four-quel Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which amassed $134.9M at the global box office. The prior trilogy amassed a combined $756.4M at the global box office. Renée was previously attached to produce and star in Peacock's WWII Air Force series Avenger Field as well as star in Michael Patrick King's revenge flick The Back Nine, but both projects appeared to have stalled.
