What are empty nesters supposed to do? Like, with their time?
JUST US Related : A. Things I would do if I had all the time in the world (and a little bit of money): 1. Take walks in new places. 2. Do cross-stitch, which I haven't done since I was about 7, but I'd find a pattern that makes something dirty or 3. Do a full day at a movie theater. Really, in winter, I could do three movies in a row. Advertisement 4. Volunteer. I'd pick two organizations and show up once a week for each. 5. I have a keyboard I never play. I would learn Christopher Cross's 'Sailing,' and I would perform it dramatically . Related : 6. Yes, I'd also join a book club. Or start one. Things I would do if I were married and wanted to connect with my partner as empty nesters? Most of the things on that list, but with company. Cross-stitch is the only solitary activity, and technically you can do that side-by-side. I'd also plan some day trips. Maybe I'd make a list of things we always wanted to do, but couldn't — and then start getting them done. As you consider all of this, ask how it's going for your partner. Know that for some, this is an easy adjustment. Regardless, it's nice to check in — and wonderful if the two of you can start making new plans. This is a great time to date all over again. MEREDITH READERS RESPOND: Consider that you've got an incredible opportunity to redefine yourself — perhaps for the first time in your life … but that in itself can feel overwhelming. Start by sampling activities to see what you like/don't like. Pursue existing interests (what are they?) and explore new ones. Local libraries are fantastic sources; I'm in two book clubs. I work out, I volunteer remotely for DCF and to support parents, I take classes, my husband and I go exploring. I participate in political phone banks/outreach/activism. I bead and I want to learn lapidary skills. You could volunteer to hold babies in the NICU or work in a food pantry. I could go on and on but … no one is going to lead you by the hand to do anything . The curiosity, motivation, and drive to find fulfillment need to come from you. Advertisement EACB I am divorced with adult kids, and since I don't want to sit home alone all the time, I have to make an effort to go out and find things to do. I still work full time even though I'm over 65. If I had a spouse or partner, I'd be happy to have someone who was available to do things with, although spouses don't always share the same interests. I love dancing, so I've been taking lessons for years. I like to travel. I like hearing live music, going out to eat, going to museums. There are so many things to do around Boston. Start looking for things. I think the big issue is that if your life has revolved around your kids, you probably don't even know what you want to do. LEGALLYLIZ2017 My kids have been out of the house for about a year and a half now. Of course I miss them, but this is the best thing ever. We go on vacation whenever we want. We go to shows all the time. We go out to brunch both Saturday and Sunday. Take naps. Watch TV with no clothes on. What's not to love about an empty nest? Advertisement JDROTTEN Related : 1. Have more sex!!!! 2. Travel. 3. Start a business or a new job. 4. Do volunteer work. 5. Join a protest movement. 6. Declutter your house. 7. Something else a lot of empty nesters seem to do is: remodel your house, add rooms onto it (for no apparent purpose), or refurnish all the rooms. 8. Sell the house and move somewhere else. 9. You could also start taking classes and improve your mind, take exercise classes, or join groups focused on an activity like bridge, mah-jongg, or golf. Is that enough to get you started? Seattle weather: Rain returning Thursday evening
It will be a bit cooler tomorrow with temperatures in the low to mid 40s. We will have a cloudy start, but the rain returns late in the afternoon, and will be very persistent through the evening hours. And as we look ahead to Friday and the weekend, we will start to see a wintry mix. The first sight of snow mixed with rain will most likely be Saturday…the biggest impact will be Sunday afternoon/evening into Monday morning. LOOKING AHEAD TO THURSDAY: Clouds to start the day, with increasing rain starting on the coast and up north. And by the late afternoon, everyone will see showers, and we will start to see some snow in the mountains. RECAP: Today Sea-Tac got to 47 degrees. The average is 49, and the record was 61 back in 2024. Sunshine and dry conditions continued today. Today is the 13th day in a row of no rain. But with rain in the forecast for tomorrow night and on Friday, we will not break the 15-day in a row streak that was set back in 1963. 7-DAY FORECAST: Rain in the evening tomorrow, and then off and on showers for Friday, with some breezy conditions. Saturday we will see a rain/snow mix, with more opportunity for the snow part on Sunday night through Monday morning. Things start to dry out on Monday afternoon, but those temperatures will stay really cold early next week. A fun weather week ahead! Buckle up.
