What is the Combat Chest in Marvel Rivals and how to get it?
Image via NetEase Games. There's been a flurry of new content in Marvel Rivals right now. First, It was the Chrono Shield Cards. Now, NetEase Games has unveiled yet another brand new aspect in the game, which is the Combat Chest. This new in-game component is going to be similar to the Battle Pass. With Season 2.5 planned to be released on May 30, 2025, a lot of things are lined-up to be revealed via this mid-season refresh update. The main highlight of this update has to be the arrival of Ultron in the game as a playable character. This upcoming character is also getting a new outfit as well, along with Groot. Besides, a lot of characters are getting their respective buffs and nerfs. Combat Chest in Marvel - What is it and how to get it? The Combat Chest is a new reward system in Marvel Rivals which works almost exactly like the Battle Pass in the game. However, there is a significant difference. Unlike the standard Battle Pass which progresses by spending Chrono Tokens, the Combat Chest progresses by playing matches. Another interesting quality of this new rewards system is that it doesn't expire at all and players can continue digging rewards from it without any time restraints. Now the question is, how to get it? If you don't want to spend your money on the game besides the Battle Pass, then you can sit relaxed as the Combat Chest will still reward you, without spending a single penny. However, that's the free version of the Combat Chest, and the rewards will also be low-tiered, like the Emma Frost Make It Rain Emote. But if you purchase the Premium version of the Combat Chest by spending 690 Lattice, which costs around $7, then you can treat yourself with some Advanced rewards like the Storm Kingdom Savior MVP. Players need to keep in mind that the Combat Chest will be available until July 11, 2025. But if players activate the Combat Chest before that, then it will stay forever in their accounts and there will be no time limit to claim rewards through it. Players can progress through the Combat Chest even after it gets unavailable, but it needs to be purchased and activated before that. The Combat Chest in Marvel Rivals is going to be released on May 30, 2025 at 9 AM UTC on all platforms, along with the release of the Season 2.5 . Is Marvel Rivals making ranked play more casual?
Image via NetEase Games. Just like any other multiplayer shooter, ranked play is one of the most important aspects of Marvel Rivals. However, it seems the game is not getting rid of the harsh criticism it's facing because of its ranked mode. After the arrival of the Chrono Shield system , many people thought that this would benefit the ranked mode. But when NetEase Games launched Chrono Shield Cards , the whole scenario changed, and now it seems the ranked mode in the game is becoming a bit more casual. Marvel Rivals: Has the ranked mode become more casual? The Chrono Shield Card is only usable for Gold ranked and below players. | Image via NetEase Games. The purpose of Chrono Shield was to save players from being deranked after multiple losses. However, it was usable once and after that it needed to be recharged. Now the surprising part is that this shield gets recharged on the basis of defeats of the players, and more surprising is that it needs more defeats from the higher ranked players to be fully recharged. On the other hand, the number of defeats to recharge this shield in lower rank is less than what players will need in higher ranks. It's already a major buff for the lower ranked players. Then came the Chrono Shield Cards as a part of the Galacta's Gift event. This card can instantly recharge the Chrono Shield, irrespective of the charge left in it. People initially thought that it was going to be a 'pay-to-win' item from NetEase, but thankfully it's not. The company later on revealed that players can't purchase this card as this can be redeemed through the event only. It would have disrupted the ranked play structure totally if it was a 'pay-to-win' item, but the shocking part is that it will still disrupt the ranked play despite not being purchasable. Here is the reason for that: Just like the Chrono Shield, the Chrono Shield Card is beneficial for the lower tiered players. This card can only be used by players ranked up to Gold tier. Now, again this is another major buff for the lower ranked players. This is actually making things a lot easier for the players in Gold rank or below, but what will happen when they come out of that phase? It is going to be unjust for the players who have worked hard to achieve those higher ranks. This is actually a casual approach towards a game mode which is supposed to be serious, practical, and result-emphasized. Marvel Rivals' Galacta's Gift Event Makes Ranking Up Even Easier
There has been no shortage of criticism for Marvel Rivals' ranked competitive system since the game's launch in December. Players earn far more rank points from a win than they lose from a loss, leading players with sub-50% win rates to climb the ladder to Diamond or Grandmaster -- and in some people's eyes, the rank distribution has lost much of its meaning and prestige. Now, Marvel Rivals' latest event risks further muddling the skill divisions of the competitive mode when it launches on May 15. The Galacta's Gift event pass will include eight consumable Chrono Shield Cards, which will prevent players from losing rank points after a competitive match loss. Read More: Marvel Rivals Season 2: The 6 Best Heroes to Start Learning Now The decision to add further safeguards to the Marvel Rivals' ranked experience is puzzling. But it might be another way to retain high player engagement, especially as support players have gone on strike during Season 2. Steam player counts are a flawed metric to measure a game's success, as player count naturally picks up and drops depending on what is going on in-game, and these charts account only for a subset of PC players among the broad console-inclusive playerbase. Even so, Marvel Rivals reportedly had more players at the end of Season 1 than at the beginning of Season 2. This event could be a quick way to scrape back some of those lapsed players, even if it harms the game's competitive integrity. Whether the Chrono Shield Cards will be detrimental to the game's competitive environment, they're here to stay. Here's how to get them -- among the other rewards included in the new Galacta's Gift event. Chrono Shield Cards are the new consumable items that protect your ranked points. NetEase Games/Screenshot by CNET Chrono Shield Cards will protect your rank points Completing event challenges during the Galacta's Gift event will level up a free event pass, containing seven tiers with different rewards. At tiers two and four, players will earn separate bundles of four Chrono Shield Cards. That means you're able to earn eight total Chrono Shield Cards during the item's debut. Once you activate a Chrono Shield Card, it will remain active until you lose a competitive match. Upon that loss, your Chrono Shield Card will be consumed -- but you won't lose any rank points for that defeat. You can have up to 20 Chrono Shield Cards at a time, and they are cleared from your inventory at the end of the season. This seems to suggest that the consumables will be plentiful enough for you to stack up on, though we don't yet know how players will be able to earn more outside of this event. Regardless, it's healthy to be skeptical about the new addition to the game -- especially if these items are moved into paid bundles sometime in the future. Chrono Shield Cards will not remove the existing Chrono Shield system for Bronze, Silver and Gold players, which charges as they lose ranked games. After enough losses, lower-ranked players gain a Chrono Shield -- protecting them from a rank demotion for a single game. Since this system protects ranked points in the lowest ranks, I'd recommend saving your Chrono Shield Cards until you reach at least Platinum rank on the competitive ladder. The costume coins are used to unlock premium skins for launch characters -- including Jeff's Incognito Dolphin skin. NetEase Games How to get a free costume during the Galacta's Gift event The Chrono Shield Cards are likely going to be the most controversial event rewards in Marvel Rivals to date, but the juiciest prize in the new event is the costume coin on the final tier. This special currency has only been obtainable during one other event -- the paid Hyper Orange Venom Pick Up Bundle. If you have a costume coin, you're able to trade it in for a premium skin from the costume shop. Many of these skins cost 1,600 units, the standard premium currency in Marvel Rivals, which is roughly equivalent to $16. Spending $3 to earn the costume coin in the Pick Up Bundle was a very good deal. Being able to earn a costume coin for free during the new event is even better. There are a number of caveats to the costume coin exchange, however. Only costumes for Season 0 heroes are available -- that means you can get a costume for a hero that was available at launch. That means costumes for the members of the Fantastic Four and Emma Frost will not be available in the costume coin exchange. Once you have your costume coin, you can trade it in by navigating to the Exchange tab located under the Store menu. I highly recommend you nab the Incognito Dolphin skin for Jeff the Shark, so you can look cute and cuddly while you harass the enemy backline. Want to get your hands on more free costumes? Marvel Rivals is releasing a possible pay-to-win item which prevents rank loss
Image via NetEase Games. Just like any other multiplayer title, ranked mode is an essential part of Marvel Rivals . Hardcore players put their hearts and souls to win the ranked matches to save their ranks. However, on the occasion of the new Galacta's Gift event , it seems fans don't need to worry about their ranks anymore. NetEase Games is going to launch a new item called the Chrono Shield Cards which will prevent rank points of the players even if they lose Competitive mode matches. This is going to be a huge treat for the ardent Ranked match fans, but this new item comes with a catch. Marvel Rivals introduces Chrono Shield Card Players now don't need to worry about getting deranked. | Image via NetEase Games. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Scarlett Johansson, 40, Shows Off Her Real Size In A New Vacation Photos 33 Bridges Undo In January this year, Marvel Rivals brought an interesting component in the ranking mechanism of the game. This new feature was Chrono Shield which was introduced as an aid for the Competitive Queue players in the game. So, what does it do? As the name suggests, if any player is in a losing spree, it will guard him from getting deranked. However, this shield can be triggered only once, and after that it needs to be recharged. Now here comes the tricky part. Winning matches doesn't put any influence on the recharging process of the Chrono Shield. The Chrono Shield will recharge automatically when a player starts losing matches again. Now comes an even more trickier part. The Chrono Shield recharges quickly for the lower ranked fans as for them less number of losses is required. Whereas, as players climb up the ranks, the losses required to recharge the shield increases. So, basically this feature is for the fans who are new to the game. However, players now don't need to be concerned about recharging the Chrono Shield anymore because NetEase is going to launch the Chrono Shield Card on May 15, 2025. This new item will instantly activate the Chrono Shield, irrespective of the amount of charge it has. However, the catch is that these cards will be cleared at the end of each season. In order to acquire these cards, players need to complete the Galacta's Gift event missions in Quick Matches, Competitive Queues, and Practice Vs. AI modes.
