Chula Vista police cracking down on people not wearing seat belts
CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — Starting Monday, the Chula Vista Police Department will have additional officers on patrol to watch for people who are not properly wearing seat belts as part of its Click It or Ticket campaign. This includes vehicles where children are not secured in a car seat or the proper child safety seat for their age. New report warns California gas prices may soar past $8 a gallon by 2026 According to California law, all children under 2 must ride in a rear-facing car seat unless they weigh at least 40 pounds or stand at least 40 inches tall. Children under the age of 8 must still be secured in a car seat or booster seat and may not ride in the front seat of a vehicle unless it does not have a rear, forward-facing seat. Furthermore, authorities remind drivers that even after reaching the age of 8, children who are not in a booster seat are still required to wear a properly fitted seat belt. The Click It or Ticket campaign runs until June 1. Adults who are caught not wearing a seat belt in California may need to pay a fine of $162. A ticket for not properly restraining a child under the age of 16 costs $490. Nationwide, nearly 10,500 people killed in car crashes in 2023 were not wearing seat belts, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
