Two Chinese nationals killed, six injured in Kuantan highway crash
KUANTAN: Two Chinese nationals were killed and six others were injured after their vehicles were involved in a crash at Km234 of the East Coast Expressway near here today.
The deceased in the 2pm accident were identified only as Zhengtai and Chunhua.
At press time, there was no information available about their ages.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz and a Nissan X-Trail, both travelling in the same direction towards Terengganu.
"The Mercedes-Benz front-seat passenger was identified as Zhengtai, a male, while his female companion, Chunhua, was in the rear passenger seat.
"Both were killed, while the vehicle's male driver, also a Chinese national, sustained bruises and cuts.
"Five people were travelling in the Nissan.
"The 30-year-old female driver, along with her passengers aged between 23 and 69, are receiving treatment at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital," he said in a statement yesterday.
He said initial investigations revealed the Nissan was travelling from Kuala Lumpur towards Kuantan when the driver is believed to have lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the metal guardrail in the middle of the road.
"The Nissan came to a halt on the emergency lane before the Mercedes, which was travelling on the same lane, crashed into it.
"Two passengers in the Mercedes were killed on the spot," he said.
Wan Mohd Zahari said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction.
