Man charged in 1995 murders of Marine brothers from Cicero, Illinois

Police in Cicero, Illinois, said they've found the man who shot and killed two brothers – both Marines – 30 years ago. Daniel Flores, 49, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 22-year-old John Fields, and his 19-year-old brother, Michael Fields, on April 12, 1995. Police found the two young men lying in the street along 50th Court. They each had multiple gunshot wounds and shortly after were pronounced dead. "John Fields had recently completed his service with the United States Marine Corps, while Michael Fields, who had followed in his brother's footsteps, was actively serving in the Marines, and was home on furlough after completing a tour of duty in Japan," said Cicero Police Supt. Thomas Boyle. Their case went cold for years until 2013, when police located a key witness. They said she knew enough about what happened to help them make the arrest. "Previous detectives attempted for a long time to locate her, but she had a relationship with our person of interest at the time," said Francisco Diaz, deputy superintendent of investigations at the Cicero Police Department. In 2021, the men's sister, Angela Fields, spoke with CBS News Chicago . "It's very frustrating, because it's 26 years. It's like, okay, let's get him back here. Let's get this done," she said. On Friday, she and her family stood teary-eyed as police finally announced charges. Flores, a Mexican native, was arrested in Mexico in 2023, and after two years he was extradited back to the U.S. "We're happy. We're happy that this can finally help the family of Michael and his brother to get closure on their losses," said LaDon Reynolds, the U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Illinois. Police said the shooting stemmed from an altercation, but would not elaborate on a motive for the murders. Flores was ordered held in Cook County Jail while he awaits trial. He is due back in court on May 2 in Maywood.

Cicero Primary Election: Dominick, Rodriguez face off for town president seat

CICERO, Ill. – Tuesday was a busy day at the Cicero Public Safety Building polling location as voters headed to the polls for the town's general election. Among the positions up for grabs is Town President. Incumbent Larry Dominick is seeking a fifth, four-year term in office while Esteban Rodriguez runs against him. 'This year is a 20-year incumbent. In any world of politics, that's a very difficult opponent,' Rodriguez said. 'There have been years and years of the same issues. People have been complaining over and over. The selling point is actually quite easy. We're talking about hard work and good policies coming in with new ideas and people rooted in the community,' Rodriguez said. Dominick did not wish to do an interview with WGN News Tuesday afternoon, but WGN's Dana Rebik did meet up with his supporter and candidate for assessor Emilio Cundari. 'Larry Dominick has led our community for several terms now. He's done a great job. He has a lot of support not only from the seniors, but the younger community feel he's doing a great job keeping our town safe,' Cundari said. 'We were able to secure a $96 million grant that will help us with infrastructure and with being able to help homeowners with different programs that can help them out individually, as well as collectively throughout the town with infrastructure projects.' Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard on Tuesday ballot Dominick, a former 20-year member and deputy superintendent of the Cicero Police Department, touts a reduction in street gang activity under his leadership along with successful senior programs, offering free yard work, transportation and discounted water bills. 'Our team, the Cicero Voters Alliance Organization, has shown and proven we're leading the town into a great future,' Cundari said. In January, Rodriguez stepped down as executive director of Corazon Community Services, a Cicero youth-based nonprofit. He accuses the incumbent town president of making Cicero a hostile place for immigrants, not providing enough protection from ICE raids. He is also working to prevent flooding, which has plagued the town in recent years. 'So that's actually one of the No. 1 issues people in this community are constantly asking and what's the plan, right? Cicero has 100-year-old infrastructure, sewer system is completely broken and deteriorating. We need a solution that actually supports the community,' Rodriguez said. 'It's still under investigation. The update is it's a white Buick Envista, black rims. That's the same suspect in both my home and the office,' Rodriguez said. According to the last census, Hispanic and Latino residents make up nearly 89% of Cicero's population. Rodriguez hopes that works in his favor.
