East side under boil water order for 48 hours
Eastsiders, you're under a boil water advisory until noon Saturday. Driving the news: A water main break near 22nd Street and Dr. Andrew J. Brown Avenue Thursday morning caused water outages and prompted the precautionary advisory from Citizens Energy Group for a swath of the east side. The affected area is bounded by Fall Creek Parkway North Drive to the north, CSX railroad tracks south of Southeastern Avenue to the south, Shadeland Avenue, Arlington Avenue and Edmondson Street to the east and South Arsenal Avenue and Spruce Street to the west. The big picture: Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation (including coffee). Don't forget your pets — they should only be given boiled or bottled water, too. Yes, but: Unboiled water can be used for showering, laundry, cleaning and flushing — just be careful not to get it in your mouth while bathing. How it works: Water should be boiled for three minutes and then cooled before using, according to Citizens. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms that could be present in the water. This applies to all water lines, even those that are filtered. You'll need to throw out any ice made with tap water after the order was issued. Because water filters collect germs from water, those need to be tossed after the advisory lifts.
