Car Deal of the Day: The Citroen C5 Aircross is a big car for a very small £208 a month

Spacious SUV with a very comfy ride Top-spec car; frugal diesel power Only £207.82 a month There's a new Citroen C5 Aircross on the way, so you know what that means – the outgoing version is an absolute bargain. It's so cheap, in fact, that you can drive off in a brand new, top-spec example for under £210 right now, which is stonking value for money. While the new C5 Aircross is getting all the fanfare, it won't be here until the end of the year. So, while it would normally make sense to wait for the new and improved version of a car, we wouldn't be surprised if you opted for this one purely on account of how cheap it is. Especially if you need a comfortable, practical and easy-to-drive family SUV that's powered by a frugal diesel engine. Advertisement - Article continues below This deal, from Lease Car UK, via the Auto Express Find a Car service, will set you back just £207.82 a month after a £2,841.84 initial payment. It's a three-year deal with a 5,000-mile-a-year cap; bumping this up to a more flexible 8,000 miles a year will cost you less than £18 extra a month. Diesel SUVs are becoming a bit of a rare thing, but for many families it's still the fuel of choice. The good news is that Citroen's 1.5-litre motor is a strong unit, delivering punchy performance thanks to 131bhp. Plus, it'll return 54mpg, so it should be light on your wallet. That frugal engine is mated to a comfortable car that's easy to drive. The C5 Aircross is fitted with Citroen's fancy 'Advanced Comfort' suspension, so it wafts along and has the ride comfort of a posh saloon. This deal nabs you a top-spec car, too. Max Edition gets you a black contrasting roof colour, full LED headlights, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors with puddle lights, roof rails, 18-inch diamond-cut alloys and a 10-inch touchscreen with in-built sat-nav and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto phone connectivity. The new-gen Jeep Compass is based on the STLA Medium architecture shared with the new Citroen C5 Aircross, allowing to get electric and PHEV powertrain options Jeep has taken the wraps off the new-generation Compass SUV, revealing the SUV in all its glory. The third-generation offering not only packs a more rugged and upmarket look but has also grown in terms of proportions, tech, and powertrain options. New-gen Jeep Compass: New Platform, Evolutionary Styling The new-gen Jeep Compass is based on the Stellantis Group's STLA Medium architecture, optimised to support multiple powertrains on the same platform. Visually, the new Compass looks evolutionary, borrowing cues from the smaller Avenger and larger Grand Cherokee in Jeep's stable. The model gets the iconic seven-slot grille with a front that's more upright. There are also trapezoidal wheel arches and rugged cladding, while the bumpers are said to be reinforced with the radar systems repositioned to avoid damage in tight spaces or when tackling obstacles. Jeep has made upgrades to the suspension setup with new springs, dampers, and an anti-roll bar, promising a good balance between handling and comfort. The model will be available in front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions. The AWD versions will have even better off-road credibility with more functional bumpers that allow 27 degrees of approach angle, 16 degrees of breakover, 31 degrees of departure angle, and improved ground clearance and water wading. The model will also come equipped with Hill Descent Control as standard on the AWD trims. The Jeep Compass electric promises a range of up to 650 km on a single charge, while the electric versions will make between 210 bhp and 370 bhp, depending on the variant New-gen Jeep Compass: More Space Furthermore, the new Jeep Compass is more spacious thanks to its new architecture. Jeep says the SUV now provides 55 mm of additional legroom, 34 litres of front interior storage space, and 45 litres of additional boot capacity, up to 550 litres. The cabin continues to be a five-seater with a 40:20:40 split for the second row. The Compass Electric promises a range of up to 650 km on a single charge and gets a fast charging time with 20-80 per cent chargeable in 30 minutes using a 160 kW DC charger. That's a big leap in price, and if you're not able to charge the plug-in regularly then there's no chance you'll make back the difference in fuel savings. However, thanks to its zero emissions range it attracts a Benefit-in-Kind company car tax rate of just eight per cent, compared to the 30 per cent you'd be liable for even with the full hybrid. For anyone earning over the 40 per cent tax threshold, that's a significant saving. Things kick off at £30,170 for the petrol-powered mild hybrid in base-spec 2 trim. The full hybrids are available on GT-Line spec and above, costing from £36,215. Plug-in hybrids attract a premium of around £5k with the cheapest priced from £40,685, although you can pay up to £45,885 for the full fat GT-Line S if you're so inclined. And that's before options. That starting price puts it competitively in the mix compared to rivals, with the Citroen C5 Aircross, Seat Ateca and Skoda Karoq coming in slightly cheaper, the Nissan Qashqai, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota C-HR on par, and the likes of the Ford Kuga, Hyundai Tucson, Peugeot 3008, Renault Austral, and (by some way) the Volkswagen Tiguan all starting over £30k. For private buyers, a two-wheel drive hybrid in 3 spec is probably the sweet spot of the Sportage line-up, setting you back £37,215. This gets 18in alloys, cloth and leather seats, heated steering wheel and front seats, smart cruise control, three-zone climate control, the 12.3in touchscreen and instrument clusters, a rear-view monitor and those handy extra USB-Cs. If aesthetics matter to you, you might be able to justify the extra couple of grand for the Shadow Edition, with its uber-cool, matte paint job (you can have it in grey, black or green) and fake-cow-bedecked seats. Aside from a few black gloss styling swaps though, you don't get much that isn't already on the '3'. Best stick with that. Kia's finance calculator can be tweaked depending on your preferred annual mileage and deposit budget, but stick £5,000 down on a hybrid '3' and you're looking at monthly repayments of £445 over three years, with interest at just over three per cent APR.

I can't believe how close the new Citroen C5 Aircross is to the original concept

Usually when a car company takes the wraps off its shiny new concept, my first thought is 'the production version won't look anything like it'. Well, Citroen just proved me wrong with the new C5 Aircross. The second-gen crossover aimed firmly at family buyers almost exactly matches the original concept showcased at last year's Munich motor show. The beefy crossover sits on the Stellantis STLA Medium architecture, which also provides the basis for the Peugeot 3008 and Vauxhall's Grandland (to name just a few. Seriously, Stellantis is huge). However, the Citroen C5 Aircross looks and feels much more imposing. That's partly down to it being a bit larger than the outgoing model, but it's the dramatic styling that really sets the tone. Citroen has increased the wheelbase by 60mm, which is immediately apparent on the inside. This is a very roomy car, with oodles of space in the front and in the rear. The effect works even more impressively thanks to a remodelled interior layout, which Citroen fluffily refers to as the 'C-Zen Lounge'. Naturally the seating – as with any Citroen – is an obvious highlight, but the fit and finish of the interior is premium, quirky and cool, just as we like it from this legendary French brand. There's lots of tech on offer too, with the middle area of the dashboard being dominated by an expansive touchscreen infotainment panel that's very tempting to prod and poke. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard too. The dashboard layout looks particularly well executed and comes complete with a healthy array of features and functions that can be customised to suit individual needs. The 10in display and larger head-up display in front of the driver is nicely done too, while there's a big emphasis on voice control options this time out, including a dollop of AI from ChatGPT. This is a family-focused crossover so, as expected, space levels are better than ever. The Citroen C5 Aircross offers 651 litres of load space in the back. Knock down those sumptuous back seats and that rises to an impressive 1668 litres. In terms of powertrain, Citroen is placing a big emphasis on the hybrid models, with a mild and plug-in edition catering for different customer needs. The latter should be good for around 53 miles of electric-only range, making it very school-run friendly. Even more interesting is the all-electric C5 Aircross, which will be available with a 73kWh battery offering 323 miles of range. A bigger 97kWh battery option delivers up to 422 miles, meaning range anxiety is firmly pushed aside. It's too early to say what the official pricing will be, but those in the know suggest the EV should land at around the £40K mark and those hybrids potentially £5K or so less. The base level mild hybrid might come in at just over the £30K mark. That's a lot of comfort and range for relatively small beans, I think.

Feeling stressed? This new family SUV claims to be a zen lounge on wheels

Famous French car brand Citroen is finding its own niche in the battle with an onslaught of cheap Chinese rivals – relaxation. The new Citroen C5 Aircross claims to be the most comfortable electric mid-size family SUV you can buy, with a focus on wellbeing and a new 'advanced comfort zen lounge' interior. The cabin features Citroen's 'sofa design' with a dashboard that's been designed like a piece of living room furniture. The lower part of the dash has a piece of foam-backed fabric stretching all the way across the dash and onto the door panels. Ambient lighting is also customisable to give the interior a welcoming feel. Big squishy seats feature thick, textured foam elements with the upper part said to surround passengers' shoulders like a shawl. The side bolsters can be adjusted electrically, while heating and ventilation for the seats is also available. The rear seats get a similar treatment, can also be heated and recline for added relaxation. Citroen claims best-in-class rear space too, with 51mm more knee room than in the previous C5 Aircross and 68mm more headroom. Rear passengers also get smartphone charging via USB-C sockets and benefit from a large panoramic sunroof that opens to bring fresh air inside. Further back, Citroen claims to have the biggest boot space in the class with a huge 651 litres of capacity and an extra 40 litres of space dotted around the cabin. Citroen has worked to reduce driver stress by optimising the ergonomics of the new C5 Aircross with a customisable 10in digital driver display and optional full-colour head-up display that beams information onto the windscreen in the driver's eyeline, while matrix-beam LED headlights give a greater view of the road ahead in darkness. The central portrait-style infotainment screen is the biggest ever in a Stellantis-family model. It's customisable and features some fixed keys for easier access to important functions, while there are separate climate control buttons neatly integrated into the bottom of the screen. Citroen calls it a 'cascade touchscreen' due to the way the screen flows down towards the centre console where there's wireless smartphone charging plus gear and drive mode selectors. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. If you want to use voice control, 'Hello Citroen' will control many of the car's functions, while ChatGPT is also integrated to answer more difficult questions. The wellbeing mantra should extend to the way the car drives. The new C5 Aircross gets progressive hydraulic cushions in the suspension to offer what Citroen claims feels like a 'magic carpet ride'. These fancy shock absorbers work well in other latest-generation Citroens so we'd have high hopes for the bigger C5 Aircross, even on the biggest 20-inch wheels, another first for Citroen. The latest Stellantis group STLA-M technology underneath the new C5 Aircross is a multi-energy platform meaning the car is available with fully electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid power. The plug-in hybrid offers an electric-only range of up to 53 miles (more in town) alongside a 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine giving a total possible range of 403 miles. The all-electric e-C5 Aircross will be available with either a 73kWh battery with a potential range of 323 miles or a 97kWh battery with a maximum claimed range of 422 miles. A heat pump to boost cold-weather efficiency isn't standard on all models, though. The maximum charging speed with either battery is 160kW, meaning a 20 to 80 per cent charge of between 27 and 30 minutes depending on battery capacity. Next year, the C5 Aircross will get faster charging and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, enabling the car to power external devices. The usual array of driver assistance and safety features are all on board, such as adaptive cruise control that also features semi-automatic lane changing, which moves the car into a clear lane once the driver has clicked the OK button on the steering wheel. The look of the new C5 Aircross favours bold, chunky lines rather than the curves of its predecessor, and features Citroen's new three-point lighting signature. Despite the bigger proportions and squarer lines, the car boasts excellent aerodynamics and can be personalised with interchangeable colour clips on the front and sides of the car to give a unique look. The new C5 Aircross is expected in UK showrooms towards October this year, with prices likely to start at under £38,000 for the all-electric model and £36,000 for the plug-in hybrid.
