Highway 178 closes as fire crews attack Democrat Fire from above

LAKE ISABELLA, Calif. (KGET) — Multiple fire crews scrambled to the scene of a wildfire in the Kern River Canyon Sunday after reports of a pick-up truck crashing into the mountainside. Authorities say the fire started shortly after 3:30 p.m. At last report, the Democrat Fire has burned 450 acres with zero containment. No word yet on any injuries. The fire quickly spread up a hill near recent road construction and burned up the ridge, consuming more than 400 acres in four hours. Firefighters, including hand crews with the U.S. Forest Service, are working on containment in difficult terrain. Luckily, they have a helicopter. Flame retardant is used to try to slow the fire's progression while the helicopter pilot tries to steady the chopper in heavy winds, making it difficult to hit the target — but the pilot hits his mark. CityServe hosts Volunteer Day to aid Southern California fire victims Air attack has requested two large air tankers, two type three tankers and three type one helicopters be deployed to the fire. One very large air tanker is reported to be en route from Arizona. The canyon was closed to traffic at 4 p.m. Sunday, and Melly Mel was stuck at the roadblock. 'I was off to sell some merch. You know what I'm saying, some business, some clothing,' said Mel. 'I got a clothing line called, 'Inkimore.' I-N-K-I-M-O-R-E, it's on Instagram. You can check it out. So, usually I come over here. I got some dealings in Kernville. So, I be out there and stuff.' Video from a Cal Fire feed shows the fire burning between 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., increasing in size. The Kern River Canyon remained closed overnight, according to the California Highway Patrol. Mel said he is going to try for Kernville again Monday. 'Probably go back home and chill,' said Mel. 'Watch Netflix or something.' The cause of the fire is under investigation. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. CityServe hosts Volunteer Day to aid Southern California fire victims

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — CityServe in Bakersfield, hosted Volunteer Day Friday in an effort to gather clothing for fire victims, because the need is still great. It's been over four months since the historic wildfires ripped through Los Angeles killing 30 people, and leaving thousands of homes in ruins. The families who survived nature's fury are still struggling to get the essentials. {Pastor Will Gutierrez/ CityServe disaster response} Sot: 'You're seeing the complete devastation. Businesses that were once standing, gone. Homes that were once there, gone. Families weeping in front of what was once their home…their children's home,' said Pastor Will Gutierrez, apart of CityServe disaster response. Pastor Will Gutierrez is CityServe's disaster responder. He says the fire victims in Southern California have been forgotten. 'You know, a lot of the coverage is not there anymore with those families that have lost their homes, lost their resources. So, for churches and organizations come together and continue to serve them and help rebuild their lives is important,' said Gutierrez. Gutierrez says big box stores like JC Penney have donated thousands of brand new clothes to the cities of Altadena, and Pasedena. Now, volunteers at CityServe headquarters in Bakersfield are donating their time to sort them. 'We're just helping with the community,' said Vicky Mendoza, with New Advances for People with Disabilities. 'We love it.' 'I want help more, yes,' said Michelle Apodaca, a volunteer. 'Help them, yes.' 'It's gonna put Shafter on the map': Residents react to this weekend's Luke Bryan's Farm Tour concert Members with the New Advances for People with Disabilities are helping fire victims one shirt at a time, and so is Ernie Sanchez. 'It's like a double-whammy to them, you know. First the fires, then the insurance loss. So, you know, they can use all the help they can get, and I have time on my hands, and I figure I've been blessed all my life,' said Ernie Sanchez, a volunteer. 'Why not help others that need help. That's why me, and my wife come out and support whenever we can.' Gutierrez says CityServe has donated millions worth of products from food, water, and hygiene products to air purifiers, toilets, and sinks. 'They need, and I believe we need our community to continue to come together, and serve them,' said Gutierrez. SNAPS! — Mayor's Ball

The Mayor's Ball held Feb. 22 at CityServe headquarters in downtown Bakersfield wasn't just an evening of elegance — it was a fundraiser that brought in about $1.9 million to continue transforming lives in Kern County. "The Mayor's Ball this year was monumental and historic for CityServe, as well as for Kern County," CityServe spokeswoman Crissy Cochran said by email. "We are so grateful for the support of this community. This is what the CityServe collaborative network is all about — working together!" CityServe is part of a global organization called CityServe Network, also based on F Street in Bakersfield, that unites churches to get donations and discount supplies to people in need.

Fifth annual Mayor's Ball provides hope to those who need it

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — It's the only black tie event where you walk a black carpet, pose and then take the escalator — the Mayor's Ball is back, and it's bigger than ever. The event kicked off at CityServe in Downtown Bakersfield on Saturday, celebrating five years with the mission to provide hope to those without any. The goal is to raise money to help the broken. 'The people that are here are all about just creating a community where we're flourishing, and we know the only way to get there is if we work together,' said Crissy Cochran with CityServe. This year, to honor CityServe's half decade milestone of changing lives, a generous donor is doubling every dollar donated to support CityServe's mission aimed at helping those who need it most. The Bakersfield College Drumline was there to help motivate the crowd. 'February is the best': It's not spring yet, but it really looked and felt like it in Bakersfield 'We're all about mobilizing the local church; bringing the local church to the table along with other non-profits and community leaders, to really just hone in on how can we help individuals go from dependency to sustainability,' said Cochran. 'I'm so proud of this organization, and everything that it does to help this community,' said State Senator Shannon Grove. 'I'm excited about Elevate Apartments and the wrap around services, and it's my honor to be here.' Every year at the Mayor's Ball, CityServe shares powerful stories. This year, it's the story of a Bakersfield woman who was thrown into human sex trafficking at 12-years-old by her own mother. 'When you have individuals that get up there that were either trafficked, that were foster youth. All these stories that you will hear about these incredible individuals where their lives were changed, and that's my favorite part — the living testimonies,' Grove said. Never miss a story: Make your homepage Of course, it wouldn't be the Mayor's Ball without the mayor herself. 'It's such a joy to lend my name to the Mayor's Ball for CityServe benefitting the needy, the broken, bringing transformation to those that are hurting the most,' said Mayor Karen Goh of Bakersfield. Hope is powerful, and it was on display at the Mayor's Ball in Bakersfield — a community full of helpers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
