WATCH: Manhole explodes, narrowly missing grandmother and her 2 grandkids

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. (WTEN) – A family had a close call with a manhole explosion in Poughkeepsie, New York, on Saturday, according to the city's fire department. At about 1:34 p.m., the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department responded to a report of a manhole explosion on Academy Street with people possibly injured. At least two other manholes also exploded down the block and on the corner of Academy Street and Church Street, the department said. In a video provided by the Poughkeepsie Fire Department, three pedestrians — a grandmother with her two young grandchildren, who had just left an Easter egg hunt — appear to be walking down the sidewalk when a manhole explodes just feet behind them, sending the manhole cover, concrete and other debris in the air. Despite the narrow miss, no injuries were reported in any of the manhole explosions, according to the fire department. During the investigation, officials reportedly found high levels of carbon monoxide in multiple buildings. The occupants of all the buildings on the block were evacuated until the gas levels were mitigated, the fire department said. All units were clear by 3:48 p.m., according to authorities. The scene was turned over to the energy company, Central Hudson, and Academy Street remained closed for a number of hours. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Manhole explodes and nearly takes out woman with two grandkids on sidewalk

Lisa Davis was pushing a stroller with one of her grandkids and walking alongside the other one around 1.30pm on Sunday when part of the sidewalk behind her erupted with the cover and dust seeping out of the cracked ground. CCTV footage shows a frightened Davis and the children running away after nearly being taken out by the manhole blast on Academy Street between Church and Cannon streets in Poughkeepsie, New York. 'I was like, 'oh my God, I don't know,'' Davis told ABC 7. 'I didn't know where to go.' One blast wasn't all to it, though. Davis said that at least two more manholes exploded. 'I couldn't really run straight ahead of me to the corner because the manhole at the next corner blew up, too,' she said. Firefighters arrived at the scene minutes later and determined that the manhole explosions were caused by high gas levels under the pavement. The scene was clear by shortly after 3.45pm, News10 reported. Authorities investigating the incident also reportedly discovered high carbon monoxide levels in several buildings in the area and residents were evacuated until the gas levels were addressed, according to the City of Poughkeepsie Fire Department. When Davis watched the video shared by the fire department, she realized she was within 'one foot of losing my family'. More Trending The grandma remains traumatized by the incident and fearful of walking on the sidewalk. Meanwhile, her six-year-old grandson told the TV station: 'I'm kind of scared, but I wasn't that scared.' Poughkeepsie is about 85 miles north of New York City. It happened nearly eight years after manhole cover almost struck a woman amid a flash flood in Gloucester in the UK.
