Civic workers in Kodagu launch indefinite strike seeking service regularisation
Madikeri: Civic workers in Kodagu district have launched an indefinite strike to press their various demands, including the regularisation of services. The strike involves more than 300 staff members, including sanitation workers, drivers, and data entry personnel.
"Despite drawing govt's attention to our various demands several times, there was no follow-up. In protest, district-wide garbage collection and office work, except water supply, were suspended from May 31. The protest will continue until the demands are met. If govt ignores our pleas, we will stop the water supply too," cautioned K Sathyanarayan, district president of the Civic Service Employees Association.
The workers are seeking equal benefits as state govt employees. Additional demands include service regularisation under the Daily Wages and Welfare Development Act, complete civic worker recruitment in municipalities, SFC salary payments, special recruitment status for water supply staff, access to Jyoti Sanjeevini healthcare facilities, and civil servant classification for IT staff, accountants, computer operators, drivers, and sanitary supervisors.

The strike by 300 workers has disrupted essential services, particularly waste collection and disposal across the district. The workers said they will continue the strike until their demands receive attention.
However, in Virajpet town, when MLA AS Ponnanna, also chief minister's legal adviser, personally operated a garbage collection vehicle and tried to carry the garbage himself, the workers withdrew the strike and did their regular duty.
Ponnanna took the initiative to address the town's cleanliness concerns by participating in waste collection with private workers.
When the workers declined Ponnanna's request to resume work, he personally operated a garbage collection vehicle. Ponnanna noted that while the state govt holds authority to resolve the workers' issues, he did not receive any formal petition from local municipal workers regarding their demands.
Virajpet Municipality president Dechamma said despite two days of negotiations involving municipal members and the MLA, the workers initially maintained their stance. However, following the MLA's personal involvement and assurances, the workers ultimately withdrew their protest and returned to work in Virajpet. During the discussions, Municipality chief officer P Nachappa was present.
