Watch: Crowds flee as burglar triggers smoke grenades at Claridge's Hotel in £190k jewellery heist attempt

This is the moment passers-by fled as a man set off smoke grenades in an attempt to steal £190,000 worth of jewels from London's iconic Claridge's Hotel. Clad in a balaclava and crash helmet, Jay McGinty, 37, arrived the hotel in Mayfair on a Vespa scooter and set down a smoke grenade, covering a hallway in thick black smoke, before attempting to break into a jewellery cabinet with a sledgehammer in March this year. However, the raid was thwarted when security staff held a revolving door shut, trapped McGinty inside, until police arrived. McGinty was sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated burglary at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday (29 May).

Sledgehammer-wielding burglar used smoke grenades in attempted jewellery heist at Claridge's

A sledgehammer-wielding burglar who used smoke grenades in an attempt to steal jewels worth £190,000 from Claridge's Hotel in London has been jailed. Jay McGinty, 37, pulled the pins out of the smoke grenades after arriving at the Mayfair hotel riding pillion on a Vespa scooter in March last year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said. CCTV showed McGinty, of no fixed abode, entering Claridge's through the revolving doors at the side entrance on Davies Street and placing the smoking grenades in the hallway. He then used a sledgehammer to smash a display case containing several jewellery items as dark smoke billowed out around him. McGinty, who was wearing a balaclava and a crash helmet, was later detained by hotel security staff, who waited with him until police arrived. He was sentenced to six years' imprisonment on Thursday after pleading guilty to aggravated burglary at Southwark Crown Court, the CPS said. Monica Oluwole, senior crown prosecutor at the CPS, said: "Jay McGinty tried to use a smokescreen to cover his brazen attempt to steal highly valued items of jewellery. "He was caught red-handed thanks to the quick actions of the hotel security and staff who prevented him from escaping and called the police. "This heist, although it had all the hallmarks of planning and reconnaissance work, didn't work, and we were able to make sure he was brought to justice."

Kate Moss puts on a leggy display in a floaty yellow mini dress as she struts her stuff during fashion photoshoot

Kate Moss put her best foot forward on Sunday as she posed up a storm for a fashion photoshoot in central London. The model, 51, showed off her toned pins in a floaty yellow £320 mini dress during the shoot for brand Self-Portrait at London's Claridge's Hotel. Kate looked on fine form as she went braless beneath the summery outfit, which she teamed with a pair of black flats and a straw clutch bag. At one point the stunner added a black velvet blazer over the broderie anglaise dress, which smartened up the look for the shoot. Kate highlighted her radiant complexion with a minimal make-up palette, while her blonde locks were left to cascade over her shoulders. After shooting stills in Mayfair, the photoshoot then continued at a house in West London. Ever the professional, the veteran model looked in good spirits while surrounded by crew during her day's work. She was seen sharing a giggle with the staff amid the shoot on the London street. Kate's photoshoot comes after Rita Ora reportedly parted ways with her modelling agency after seven years, becoming the latest celebrity to exit the firm. The Poison singer, 34, joined her friend's agency in 2018 but is now said to be moving on as she shifts her focus toward securing global brand deals. According to The Sun, Rita is preparing to expand her reach internationally, having signed with major US firm Range Media back in October. An insider told the publication: 'Rita and Kate are still pals, but the time has come for them to do their own thing when it comes to business. 'Rita recently signed with Range, which handles all areas of her career — including music, film, TV and brand deals. 'It made sense for Rita to part ways with the Kate Moss Agency and have all of her deals in one place.' MailOnline had contacted Kate and Rita's representatives for comment. Prior to signing with Kate, Rita was signed to Next models, who she had been with for six years. Meanwhile, Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards' granddaughter, Ella Richards, has also vanished from Kate's agency's website. Ella, who is Kate's goddaughter, is currently dating photographer Sascha Von Bismarck - the brother of Kate's ex-boyfriend, aristocrat Nikolai Von Bismarck. Kate has banked millions in profits though her modelling agency which looks after the likes of her daughter Lila. The supermodel founded her talent agency in September 2016 and her 2024 accounts revealed the huge amount Kate's firm has raked in. Fashionista Kate's company brought in £4.3million in profits, including £831,000 earned in 2023. For the year ending July 31, 2023, the agency held £5.9million in assets which included £2.6million in cash. It owed £1.5million in bills but just £13 in bank loans and overdrafts. The net assets rose from £3.5million in July 2022 to £4.31million. A source told The Sun: 'Kate started the business at the time Lila was starting to model. 'It was also at the time Kate herself was changing her lifestyle and stopping her renowned partying. 'So it has been a roaring success and she has other high-profile stars on the books. 'Kate has so much experience in the industry and has been able to apply it to what she knows best — modelling.'

The Biggest Song Of 2024 Makes History Yet Again

Teddy Swims's "Lose Control" breaks Billboard's all-time record for most weeks in the Hot 100's top ... More 10, passing The Weeknd's "Blinding Lights." LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 01: Teddy Swims arrives at the Warner Music Brit awards after party at Claridges Hotel on March 01, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by Neil P. Mockford/Getty Images for INEOS Automotive ) Teddy Swims first made a real name for himself with 'Lose Control,' the single that didn't just catapult him to stardom, but which became one of the most successful tracks in American chart history. The tune has been going strong for nearly two years now, and this week, it manages to make Billboard history once again, as the masses are still enjoying listening to it however they can. 'Lose Control' lifts slightly on the Hot 100, advancing from No. 8 to No. 7. But it's not the small rise that's really the story — it's the amount of time the track has spent inside the competitive top 10. As of this week, Swims's breakout hit has now spent 58 weeks ranked as one of the 10 most-consumed tracks in the U.S. That figure is staggering, and previously unheard of. With this latest frame, Swims passes The Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights,' which for years had held this specific record with 57 weeks spent in the top 10. 'Lose Control' now stands alone. Beyond that milestone, 'Lose Control' is also currently making history when it comes to total time spent on the chart. The tune has now racked up a total of 87 weeks on the Hot 100, tying it with Imagine Dragons' 'Radioactive' as the third-longest-running hit in the ranking's decades-long tenure. Swims still trails two other massive smashes: Glass Animals' 'Heat Waves,' which holds the top spot with 91 weeks, and The Weeknd's 'Blinding Lights,' which once led the all-time list with 90 frames. If 'Lose Control' manages to hold on for just a few more frames — and at this rate, it very likely could — Swims might soon leap even higher on this historic roster. Several years ago, Billboard implemented a policy stating that once a track racks up 52 weeks on the Hot 100 — a full year — it must stay inside the top 25 or risk being removed permanently from the ranking. Thankfully for Swims, 'Lose Control' isn't in danger of dropping below that threshold anytime soon. The song remains safely within the top 10 for now, and unless its numbers drop away sharply, it could very well remain on the tally for weeks, if not months. Despite all its history-making success, 'Lose Control' only spent one week at No. 1 on the Hot 100. But that lone frame, paired with its non-stop presence inside the top 10, was enough for Billboard to crown it the top-performing single of 2024 on the Hot 100. The song has been certified six-times platinum in the U.S., a number that is sure to grow again soon. Thanks largely to the runaway success of 'Lose Control,' Swims established himself as one of the hottest new names in music and even earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, and this tune is even outpacing many newer tunes from a recently-released album.
