Former Las Vegas police officer denied parole in woman's 1997 killing
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Nevada's parole board denied parole for a former police officer who is in prison in connection with the murder of a woman in 1997, the 8 News Now Investigators have learned. Arthur Sewell, 58, will continue to serve time in prison for Nadia Iverson's death. Sewell began serving a six-to-15-year prison sentence in 2023 after entering a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon enhancement. Sewell also received credit for time already served in jail. A parole hearing was held on May 5. Iverson, 20, died of a gunshot wound in May 1997. Her body was found inside a home under construction in downtown Las Vegas. An investigation revealed that Iverson may have been sexually assaulted. Marie Coker, Iverson's sister, who lives out of state, traveled to Nevada for the parole hearing to speak against Sewell's release from prison. 'So he gets to see me and my sister,' Coker said in a previous interview. 'Every chance I get up there to stand to be a voice for her.' The crime was unsolved until 2018 after the state of Nevada tested decades-old rape kits. Sewell's DNA was found to be a match in Iverson's killing, police said. While Las Vegas Metro police said Iverson was a sex worker who struggled with a drug problem, Iverson's loved ones told the 8 News Now Investigators she was not a sex worker. Coker said that she had only been in Las Vegas for a short period and had been going through a tough time after a failed relationship, and her mother was in a serious car accident. In a video obtained by the 8 News Now Investigators, two cold case detectives interviewed Sewell and told him a gun that he owned was connected to the crime scene. For more than an hour, Sewall denied involvement before admitting to killing Iverson. 'I went out with the intention of sexual gratification, and when my .357 went off, it freaked me out and I bolted and panicked,' Sewall told the detectives. A Clark County District Court judge later determined Sewell's confession could not be used in the murder case because detectives kept questioning Sewell without an attorney. The judge also determined that his Miranda rights were violated. Months before Iverson was killed, Sewall resigned from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. He was convicted of abusing his power as a law enforcement officer after he was caught on video exchanging favors for sexual acts. Sewell is serving his time at Ely State Prison. According to prison records, Sewell has used both Sewell and Sewall for his surname. Coker said the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners initially informed her Sewell would be up for parole in 2026. A victim services coordinator later informed her that this was incorrect and confirmed a May 2025 hearing. Sewell will not be eligible for parole again until October 2027, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections. Records show he will finish serving his sentence in May 2028. Judge says case against Las Vegas police sergeant should move forward
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A judge said a criminal case against a Las Vegas Metro police sergeant should move forward. Clark County District Court Judge Ron Israel denied a motion to stay, or temporarily halt criminal proceedings, in the case against Kevin Menon Monday. Menon, 43, is charged with 13 counts, including three felonies and 10 gross misdemeanors, in his first case. Prosecutors said he abused his power as a police sergeant by creating fake scenarios that resulted in citizens, mainly Black men, being detained on the Las Vegas Strip. Menon is charged with an additional 33 counts, including five felonies and 28 gross misdemeanors after police said they found child sexual abuse material on his electronic devices and cameras installed in Menon's private bathroom. Prosecutors allege Menon used the cameras to watch two family members use the toilet without their knowledge. Las Vegas police sergeant's bail raised to $1 million 'I see no reason for a stay to prolong what has already been almost a year since the first case was filed,' Israel said. 'So I'm denying the stay.' Menon's legal team had argued for Israel to be removed from overseeing his criminal cases, in part due to allegations of abuse from his adult daughter. Clark County District Court Judge Mark Denton ruled against Menon's request. 'The Court cannot find the defendant has met his burden to establish actual or implied bias or lack of impartiality warranting disqualification of Judge Israel,' Denton wrote in his order. Menon's legal team asked the Nevada Supreme Court to disqualify Israel on May 14. Las Vegas police sergeant fails in effort to get judge removed from cases His attorneys alleged 'implied bias' from Israel, asked Nevada's high court to command Denton to order the disqualification of Israel, and questioned why there was no police investigation into Israel's daughter's claims in a petition for writ of mandamus. A jury trial is scheduled for Aug. 18. Menon has claimed in court documents he tried to expose racism within the police department and he is being retaliated against. Las Vegas police sergeant fails in effort to get judge removed from cases
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A Metro police sergeant's attempt to get a judge removed from overseeing two criminal cases against him has failed. Attorneys for Kevin Menon, 43, filed a motion to disqualify Clark County District Court Judge Ron Israel, citing allegations of abuse from his daughter. Clark County District Court Judge Mark Denton denied Menon's motion in an order Wednesday. Menon is charged in three separate criminal cases. In his first case, the Clark County District Attorney's Office alleges Menon abused his power by creating fake scenarios that resulted in citizens, mainly Black men, being detained on the Las Vegas Strip. Detectives said when they seized Menon's electronic devices for the investigation, they found child sexual abuse material, also known as child pornography. This resulted in a second criminal case against Menon for child pornography-related charges. As a result of an additional search warrant, police said they found hidden cameras in bathrooms Menon's home. This resulted in the third criminal case. Israel is overseeing the first two criminal cases. 'The court cannot find the defendant has met his burden to establish actual or implied bias or lack of impartiality warranting disqualification of Judge Israel,' Denton wrote in his order. Menon's attorneys, Dominic Gentile and Austin Barnum, filed a 644-page document on March 10 arguing for Israel's disqualification. 'Judge Israel is publicly accused of criminal conduct by his daughter,' they wrote. The motion included links from YouTube and TikTok where a woman, identified as Israel's daughter, Sarah, claimed Israel abused her. 'My dad has stalked me and terrorized me at my house to the point where I developed agoraphobia, because, like the last time I saw him at his house, he tried to pull a gun out on me, and I had to run for my life,' the woman claimed. 'I am scared. I am scared, beyond belief.' Israel responded in a court filing on March 11, stating he should not be disqualified, he does not have any personal bias or prejudice toward Menon, and he was unaware of any active investigations regarding his daughter's claims. 'If an agency wants to investigate the matter, they are welcome to; I am unaware of any facts that would even remotely create any bias,' Israel wrote. 'I cannot comment on my daughter's mental health issues based on the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.' Menon has claimed in court documents that he tried to expose racism within the police department, and he is being retaliated against. According to the motion to disqualify Israel, Menon tried to report his superior for being 'overtly racist and using the 'n-word' freely,' but a detective and sergeant turned the investigation against Menon and accused him of being untruthful and refused to look at text messages to verify his allegations. The motion included copies of text messages about the individual Menon reported. 'I do believe he's playing the system to get you fired,' one text, which appeared to be from another officer, read. 'None of us will lie to protect him.' 'He targeted me, he spread lies about me, and he said racist, offensive about Indians, and black people (knowing my wife is black),' Menon texted, according to the court filing. Menon is currently in custody after Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus, who is overseeing the third criminal case, increased his bail to $500,000 cash on April 14. A jury trial in the third case was scheduled for June 2. A jury trial in the second case was scheduled for Aug. 18. Hearings with Holthus and Israel are scheduled for May 5 to address Menon's 'indigent status,' which has been filed under seal, according to court records. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Ex-boyfriend who killed Las Vegas mom while kids slept sentenced to life in prison
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man who stabbed and killed his ex-girlfriend while her young children, who found her body the next morning, were in the home, could serve the rest of his life in prison, a judge ruled Thursday. In January 2024, David Perry, 35, killed Breyanna Sotomayor, 33, at a short-term rental property near Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive. When police arrived, they found Sotomayor with multiple stab wounds to her back, neck and chest, documents said. Last January, Perry took a plea deal on charges of murder with the use of a deadly weapon and child abuse, records said. As part of the deal, Perry agreed to serve a life sentence with parole eligibility after several decades. In court Thursday, Clark County District Court Judge Tierra Jones sentenced Perry to life in prison with parole eligibility after 30 years. Shortly before police arrived, Sotomayor's children used an iPad to FaceTime Sotomayor's mother, who was in California, documents said. The children told their grandmother that Sotomayor wouldn't wake up and there was 'blood all around her.' Sotomayor and Perry dated for several months in 2023, but records show Perry was arrested for domestic battery strangulation against Sotomayor in September. According to police, the case was dismissed due to a 'lack of cooperation' from Sotomayor, and Perry was released from custody in October 2023. Police in Kentucky arrested Perry a week after the murder. For a list of local and state resources for domestic violence and abuse victims, . Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
