Man was pretending to be a Clarksburg police officer while high, troopers say

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — A man has been arrested and is facing misdemeanor charges after troopers with the West Virginia State Police say he was impersonating a Clarksburg Police Officer while under the influence of drugs. According to a criminal complaint, on April 14, troopers with the West Virginia State Police patrolling East Main Street in Clarksburg noticed a silver Dodge Caliber with a red headlamp hanging from the mirror, which was 'flashing as an emergency light.' When troopers approached the vehicle, they said that the driver switched off the mirror and slammed on the brakes. Troopers said they then pulled over the Caliber and made contact with the driver, Estel Bennett, 58, who told troopers that he was a Clarksburg police officer who also assists local law enforcement. Man charged with attempted murder in Morgantown stabbing After troopers found Delta 9 THC and handcuffs in Bennett's possession, he admitted that he 'had smoked marijuana' and taken non-prescribed valium earlier in the day, the complaint said. He also showed signs of impairment during a sobriety test. Troopers were also told by the Clarksburg Police Department that Bennett was not an officer or an employee with the agency. Bennett has been charged with impersonating law enforcement, possession of a controlled substance, DUI and illegally possessing a restricted lamp—all misdemeanors. He is being held in the North Central Regional Jail. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

3 men charged after officers find fentanyl and loaded gun during Clarksburg traffic stop

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Three men, including a key witness in an ongoing murder trial, were charged after officers found a loaded firearm and fentanyl during a traffic stop in Clarksburg. On Feb. 25, officers with the Clarksburg Police Department observed a vehicle in the area of E Main Street 'with a break light that was not functional,' according to a criminal complaint. When the vehicle turned onto Monticello Avenue, officers initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the vehicle's occupants, identified as Robert Rehnert, 45; Richard Dodd, 42; and Branden Landis, 25, officers said. A K-9 unit was deployed to perform a free-air sniff in the area of the vehicle which resulted in a positive indication for the presence of narcotics and led to officers performing a search, according to the complaint. CAMC sued after data breach may have impacted more than 67,000 people In the search, officers located a loaded firearm, which had a round chambered and the hammer back, as well as methamphetamine, a substance which field-tested positive for fentanyl, Xylazine and cash 'in denominations consistent with the sale/delivery of controlled substances,' officers said. Rehnert, Dodd and Landis have been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. They are each being held in North Central Regional Jail. Rehnert, who is a key witness in the murder trial for Allen Schaffer happening in Harrison County this week, testified at the trial less than 24 hours after his arrest.
