Guardians' ace Bieber will not throw for 7 days after setback in comeback from Tommy John surgery

(AP Photo/Ashley Landis, file) CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians ace Shane Bieber will not throw for seven days and will have his right elbow rechecked next week after experiencing soreness during a bullpen session on Tuesday. Bieber met with team doctors and consulted with specialist Dr. Keith Meister on Friday. The right-hander was scheduled to make his second rehab start with Double-A Akron on Friday before the setback. Advertisement The seven-day shutdown started on Wednesday. He will be rechecked on June 13 before deciding the next steps. Experiencing soreness during rehab is not uncommon. Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in April 2024. He began his rehab Saturday by throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on his 30th birthday. The 2020 American League Cy Young Award winner faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five. Bieber pitched 12 scoreless innings in two starts last season, was limited to 21 starts in 2023 due to elbow issues and 16 starts in 2021 because of a shoulder strain. He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026. Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 136 appearances since debuting with the Guardians in 2018, when he was 11-5 with a 4.55 ERA. ___ AP baseball:

Kyle Manzardo also went deep for the Guardians, who scored three times in the first inning and turned a trio of double plays. Ortiz (3-6) allowed three hits and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings. Advertisement Martínez connected in the first on Clarke Schmidt's seventh pitch. Daniel Schneeman added an RBI double later in the inning to help the Guardians win for the third time in their last 11 regular-season trips to the Bronx. José Ramírez doubled in the first, extending his on-base streak to 30 games, and scored on Schneeman's double. Manzardo padded the lead with a solo homer in the eighth. ___ More AP baseball:

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki) CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez has shown he can turn a game around with one swing of the bat. On Monday night, the Guardians All-Star third baseman did it with his glove and legs. Ramírez made a nice play to get Milwaukee's Andruw Monasterio out at second base with the bases loaded for the final out. In the home half, he stole two bases after getting aboard with a single and scored on Gabriel Arias' double with the bases loaded to put the Guardians up 3-0. Advertisement Ramírez ended up with three stolen bases and moved into third on Cleveland's all-time list as the Guardians opened the series with a 5-0 victory over the Brewers. 'Try to find a way how to do damage any way I can. And today that was the case (with the stolen bases),' Ramírez said through an interpreter. 'So it's always the same focus with all the teams, try to do damage in different ways.' Ramírez is the fifth player in the majors to have three stolen bases in a game. It is the third time in his 13-year career he has done it, and first since 2021 against Texas. Ramírez's hit and aggressive base running also helped wake up a Cleveland offense that had scored only one run in its last 21 innings. Advertisement 'José knows when he needs to do that stuff. We're having a hard time getting offense going off (Freddy) Peralta. He gets on base, let me make something happen,' manager Stephen Vogt said. 'And that's so much homework that goes into knowing when he can go looking at the jump. He's a cerebral player. He knows when he needs to get us going, and boy did he, and it's just fun to watch him.' Ramírez has 255 steals and moved past Terry Turner, who had 254 from 1904 through 1918. Kenny Lofton is the franchise leader with 452 followed by Omar Vizquel's 279. Ramírez also has an 11-game on-base streak and is hitting .375 (15 for 40) with one home run and four RBIs during that span. He is sixth in the majors with 12 stolen bases. In the seventh inning, Ramírez got aboard again with an intentional walk, but had no thoughts about getting his first four-steal game. Advertisement 'You have to also take into consideration the score of the game, but also staying healthy because stealing basically is always a risk at that time. The game wasn't calling for that situation,' he said. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Nick Wass) WASHINGTON (AP) — Carlos Santana kick-started an eight-run sixth inning with a bases-clearing double, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Nationals 8-6 on Wednesday to win two of three at Washington in a 24-hour span. The Guardians sent 13 men to the plate in the sixth against Michael Soroka (0-2) and relievers Jorge Lopez and Andrew Chafin. The first seven reached, and all of them scored. Leadoff man Steven Kwan scored twice in Cleveland's biggest inning of the season. Advertisement Before the sixth, the Guardians had just two hits and eight strikeouts against Soroka, who made his second start for the Nationals after straining his right biceps in his March 31 debut. But Cleveland rediscovered the relentless offense that produced nine runs in each game while splitting a doubleheader a day earlier. After a rainout Monday, the first game of Tuesday's twinbill began at 3:35 p.m. and Wednesday's regularly scheduled matinee concluded at 3:03 p.m. Gabriel Arias had four hits for Cleveland, which has won seven of nine. Joey Cantillo (1-0) worked a scoreless fifth, and Emmanuel Clase pitched the ninth for his eighth save. Washington left 15 runners on base. Advertisement Key moment Guardians reliever Cade Smith, who gave up four runs in two-thirds of an inning in Tuesday's first game, entered in the seventh with a four-run advantage. He allowed Amed Rosario's two-run single, then loaded the bases before retiring Alex Call on a flyball to right to preserve an 8-6 lead. Key stat Soroka's last scoreless outing of five innings or more was on July 24, 2020, his debut in that COVID-19-shortened season. Up next Guardians: Begin a three-game series against visiting Philadelphia on Friday night with Gavin Williams (2-2, 5.06 ERA) on the mound. Nationals: Host St. Louis for a three-game series starting Friday night. Mitchell Parker (3-2, 3.48) is scheduled to start against the Cardinals' Erick Fedde (2-3, 4.78). ___ AP MLB:

Guardians' José Ramírez leaves game after being hit by throw and stumbling over first base

Cleveland Guardians' Jose Ramirez steals second base in front of Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette during the first inning of a baseball game in Toronto on Friday, May 2, 2025. (Chris Young/The Canadian Press via AP) TORONTO (AP) — Cleveland Guardians star José Ramírez left Friday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the third inning after being hit by a throw from pitcher Chris Bassitt and stumbling awkwardly over first base on an infield single. With Steven Kwan at first base and two outs, Ramírez hit a slow roller toward the mound. Right-hander Bassitt's throw to first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit Ramírez on the upper back, and the six-time All-Star stumbled over the base before hitting his left knee on the dirt. Advertisement Ramírez lay on his back for a moment before receiving attention from an athletic trainer, then stood and walked off the field. Daniel Schneeman ran for Ramírez and went to second base, with Gabriel Arias moving from second to third. Ramírez went 2 for 2 before departing, boosting his average to .274. He has five home runs and 15 RBIs in 31 games. A day earlier during a 4-3 win over Minnesota, Ramírez become the first primary third baseman to reach 250 homers and 250 stolen bases. He stole another base in the first inning Friday. ___ AP MLB:
