DECK Q1 Earnings Call: Sales Miss Expectations, Margin Expansion and Cautious Outlook
Footwear and apparel conglomerate Deckers (NYSE:DECK) fell short of the market's revenue expectations in Q1 CY2025, but sales rose 6.5% year on year to $1.02 billion. Its GAAP EPS of $1 per share was 66.9% above analysts' consensus estimates. Is now the time to buy DECK? Find out in our full research report (it's free). Operating Margin: 17.4%, up from 16% in the same quarter last year Locations: 181 at quarter end, up from 164 in the same quarter last year Constant Currency Revenue rose 7.5% year on year (21.1% in the same quarter last year) Same-Store Sales fell 1.6% year on year (20.6% in the same quarter last year) Market Capitalization: $16.28 billion Deckers' leadership attributed quarterly performance to the continued momentum of its two largest brands, HOKA and UGG, which each saw growth across channels and regions. While HOKA benefited from expanded wholesale distribution and new product launches such as the Bondi 9 and Clifton 10, direct-to-consumer growth in the U.S. was tempered by higher promotions on outgoing models and some softness in new customer acquisition. For UGG, strong wholesale demand for transitional and spring styles underpinned growth, though limited availability of key products in direct channels constrained sales. CFO Steve Fasching noted that gross margin improvement was driven primarily by higher levels of full-price selling within UGG and favorable product mix. Looking forward, management emphasized that macroeconomic uncertainty and new U.S. footwear tariffs are likely to weigh on results in the coming quarters. Steve Fasching explained, 'We believe there is potential to see demand erosion associated with the combination of price increases and general softness in the consumer spending environment.' The company anticipates that international growth—especially for HOKA—will outpace the U.S., while wholesale channels will drive more incremental gains than direct-to-consumer. Deckers also plans selective price increases and cost-sharing with suppliers to partially offset tariff impacts, but expects gross margins to face headwinds as a result. CEO Stefano Caroti reiterated a long-term focus on innovation and international expansion to support both brands despite near-term challenges. Management pointed to model transitions, shifting channel dynamics, and external trade policy changes as major factors shaping the quarter's financial results and longer-term strategy. HOKA wholesale expansion: The brand saw continued growth in global wholesale distribution, with management highlighting that expanded retail partnerships and strong sell-through of new models like the Bondi 9 contributed to overall gains even as U.S. direct-to-consumer growth slowed. Product upgrade cycle: New iterations of key franchises (Bondi 9, Clifton 10) received positive feedback from consumers and partners, but transition periods involved higher promotional activity and lower average selling prices, especially in the direct channel. UGG's diversification and men's growth: UGG drove growth through new product categories, including men's-focused styles and hybrid products. Management cited successes with men's campaigns and higher sell-through of spring products in China, reflecting progress in broadening the brand's appeal and seasonality. Tariff and cost pressures: Deckers is facing incremental costs from new U.S. footwear tariffs and higher freight rates. While only a small portion of production is sourced from China, management expects partial mitigation through price increases and supplier negotiations but anticipates some margin contraction. Inventory and supply chain management: The company intentionally increased inventory levels compared to last year to navigate potential tariff timing and a European distribution center transition, aiming to avoid supply disruptions during key periods. Deckers' outlook is shaped by planned price adjustments, macroeconomic headwinds, and a continued push for international and wholesale-led growth. Tariffs and pricing strategy: Management expects new U.S. tariffs on footwear imports to increase costs, prompting a staggered implementation of selective price increases and cost-sharing with factory partners. However, they caution that not all incremental costs will be offset, and higher prices may impact demand, particularly in the U.S. International and wholesale momentum: The company projects that international sales, especially in Europe and China, will grow faster than domestic sales. HOKA's expanding presence in overseas markets and additional wholesale partnerships are seen as main avenues for capturing new customers and mitigating U.S. softness. Product innovation and pipeline: Deckers is prioritizing ongoing product launches and upgrades across HOKA and UGG, including new performance models and lifestyle offerings. Management believes this will help maintain consumer interest and support growth across both established and emerging categories, even as the environment remains uncertain. In the coming quarters, the StockStory team will closely monitor (1) Deckers' ability to offset tariff-related cost increases through pricing and supplier negotiations, (2) trends in HOKA's U.S. direct-to-consumer segment as new models gain traction and promotions normalize, and (3) the pace of international and wholesale channel expansion—especially in key markets like China and Europe. The success of upcoming product launches and supply chain adaptations will also be important indicators of execution. Deckers currently trades at a forward P/E ratio of 17.4×. In the wake of earnings, is it a buy or sell? The answer lies in our full research report (it's free). Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election sent major indices to all-time highs, but stocks have retraced as investors debate the health of the economy and the potential impact of tariffs. Hoka Clifton 10 Review: More Foam, Same Daily Comfort And Flow
Now in its 10th iteration, the Hoka Clifton has quietly become one of the most reliable and recognizable running shoes. I picked up my first pair—the Clifton 6—back in 2019, and I've logged hundreds of miles in every version since. It's the shoe you see everywhere because it meets so many needs, and while there's no official data that confirms it's the best-selling shoe, you wouldn't be wrong for thinking so. Expectations are always high when Hoka updates the Clifton, and after a few weeks of marathon training in the Clifton 10, I'm here to report it's as good as it's ever been. The Clifton is that go-to shoe in a runner's lineup that just works. It's not very fast, but it's not slow either. It's cushy without feeling mushy, soft yet surprisingly spirited. The Clifton 10 introduces some updates, like a higher drop, a new upper and more stack, but it feels like the many models that came before it. Essentially, it's a do-it-all style you can put on and forget about in the best way, and that's what makes it my favorite everyday running shoe. Here's what you need to know before you add it to your quiver. Price: $150 | Weight: 8.8 ounces (women's), 9.8 ounces (men's) | Drop: 8mm | Stack height: 42mm (heel), 34mm (forefoot) | Upper: Jacquard | Midsole: EVA foam | Outsole: Rubber Best for: Skip if: The reason runners fell in love with the Clifton when it launched is the same reason it's still so popular today: its cushioning. But to describe the Clifton 10 as this maximal, cloud-like shoe with a big stack implies it's clunky or even dull, when it's actually quite versatile. While training for a race, the Clifton 10 started as my shoe of choice for slow recovery runs, but over time it became my preferred option for long weekend runs and even the occasional tempo workout, thanks to Hoka's MetaRocker technology that helps with heel-to-toe transitions. For most workouts, the Clifton 10 was happy to oblige, though it's not the shoe I'd recommend for true speed workouts or qualifying races. And although this model has maintained a 5mm drop for years, the Clifton 10 increases that to 8mm—a 60% jump. Hoka says the change addresses how runners typically wear their Cliftons for hundreds of miles, during which repetitive impacts compress the foam and make it feel like a lower-drop shoe. By adding more foam, the Clifton 10 helps preserve Hoka's intended offset even after you've broken it in. During testing, I barely noticed the increased drop—and most runners probably won't either—but the added foam is a welcome upgrade that doesn't compromise stability. And in spite of the bigger midsole, it's still a lightweight shoe for what it offers. Mine weighs just under 10 ounces for a men's size 9.5. If this shoe's cushioning is its standout feature, the upper isn't far behind. It's one of the only shoes I can pull from the box, lace up and run in without issue. The new jacquard knit upper doesn't look or even feel all that different from the previous one, but it's breathable and seems to hold up well to daily use. According to Hoka, the forefoot is also slightly wider, which I can appreciate as someone with flat, wide feet. I've read a few reviews that suggest the redesign might rub if you have big toes or bunions, so keep an eye out for hot spots, and pack a Band-Aid if that's a concern. Material has also been added to the back of the shoe to make it softer and more forgiving in the heel. If anything, it feels ever-so-slightly more plush, but my heel still locks into the shoe and doesn't slip or move around. Again, this is a model you can lace up and run a half-marathon in without a second thought—the added padding doesn't change that. If anything, it just makes it that much easier to wear, especially if you need shoes for standing all day. The general consensus is that running shoes last between 300 and 500 miles, but it wouldn't be surprising if Clifton fans told me they push theirs well beyond those limits. That's not to say Cliftons are designed to outlast other running shoes, but in my experience, they hold up well to constant use. I've logged about 40 miles in my Clifton 10s, and they still feel as fresh and supportive as they did on day one. The uppers look great, and, in my experience, they're durable enough to resist ripping or blowouts (and I've never replaced a pair due to a lack of durability). All in all, I think the Clifton 10 is built to go the distance, literally and figuratively. While this is a well-rounded shoe from top to bottom, ultimately whether or not it's right for you depends on your needs. If you're after something truly fast and responsive, this isn't the shoe for you. And if you need a stability shoe for overpronation, it doesn't check that box either. Like any running shoe, it performs best when used as intended, and in this case, that means everyday training, long runs, walking and the occasional speed workout. There are a lot of other Hoka running shoes we recommend if you like the brand but can't find a spot for the Clifton in your lineup. The Clifton 10 checks every box I look for in a daily trainer. It's soft and plush yet surprisingly stable for a maximum-cushioned shoe. It offers just enough responsiveness when you need it and settles in when you don't. And it's easy to wear for hours on end. Its versatility makes it a great option for a lot of different runners. Whether you're lacing up your first pair of running shoes, logging miles for your next marathon or simply looking for supportive footwear for long hours on your feet, the Clifton 10 adapts to the task at hand. It stays true to what makes the Clifton so popular—and somehow makes it even better.

Our favorite launches (so far) this month: Hoka, Garmin, JBL and more
This story is part of NBC Select's New & Notable column, where we highlight our favorite product launches. We will continuously update this article throughout the month with new releases we think you should know about. Apparel and footwear launches Hoka Clifton 10 Hoka released its Clifton sneaker 10 years ago, and to make the occasion, the brand debuted its latest iteration. Compared to the 9, which is still one of our top picks for walking and running, the Clifton 10 has a thicker, softer and more stable layer of plush cushioning, as well as a sleeker shape, smoother feel and better overall fit. The shoe also has reflective details, a durable rubber outsole, a breathable upper and a double lace lock to prevent laces from moving or untying during wear. You can buy the Clifton 10s in men's and women's sizes. Bombas Compression Calf Sleeves If you want the benefits of compression socks without the foot coverage, try Bombas' new Compression Calf Sleeves, which extend from your ankles to just below your knees. They offer 20 to 30 mmHg of compression — it's a moderate amount that's comfortable to wear during exercise or recovery, according to the brand. The compression calf sleeves can support muscles and reduce soreness, and you can also wear them with or without socks for workouts like yoga or pilates. You can buy them in men's and women's sizes. JBL Headphones and Speakers JBL launched new over-ear headphones and Bluetooth speakers this month. The two new speakers, the Flip 7 and Charge 6, have improved IP68 dust and waterproofing, longer battery life and newer features like JBL Auracast, which pairs multiple JBL speakers together. NBC Select associate SEO reporter Ashley Morris has been using the Flip 7 for about a month, and loves how loud and clear the speaker sounds, despite its compact size. It's become her go-to shower speaker. Garmin Vivoactive 6 Garmin makes some of our favorite smartwatches and fitness trackers, and its Vivoactive series strikes a great balance between price, features and looks. This latest version adds more fitness features than before. The Garmin Pace Pro feature has more advanced running metrics and customizable route pacing. For workouts, there are dozens of new exercise profiles, guided animations for certain exercises and a new mobility activity focused on strength and flexibility. Like the previous version, it gets up to 11 days of battery life. The Google Pixel A-series smartphones aren't the flashiest, but they are great value for the features — I've used the Google Pixel 8a phone for almost a year, and most of the time, I barely notice that it costs half as much as my iPhone 15 Pro. Despite all the news about tariffs, the latest Google Pixel 9a still starts at $499, and has a new internal processor, brighter screen, longer battery life, improved IP68 dust and waterproof and a macro camera lens. Samsung is one of the best TV brands, and its The Frame TV has a matte screen that makes it look like wall art when turned off. The brand launched the 2025 The Frame TV, but the more interesting announcement is the new The Frame Pro series TV. The Frame Pro models use mini-LEDs to enhance contrast and brightness compared to the original version, according to the brand. Withings BPM Vision Withings is known for smart health-focused devices like smart scales and smart watches. This FDA-cleared blood pressure monitor is an evolution of the brands previous Withings BPM Connect. It comes with a tablet that gives you step-by-step instruction on how to get a proper blood pressure reading, then shows you your results in a colorful and clear manner, according to the brand. The monitor connects to the Withings app, which keeps track of your readings over time and can provide trend analysis. Professional digital cameras tend to look and feel similar to each other, says NBC Select reporter Harry Rabinowitz. The Sigma BF bucks the norm in nearly every way. It's an ultra-minimal, all-metal digital camera with a sleek, striking design, and it takes excellent photos. The minimal interface and simple buttons makes it almost feel like a smartphone-camera hybrid. Rabinowitz tried out the Sigma BF and an accompanying new Sigma 50mm lens for about a month ahead of the launch and had mixed feelings. On one hand, he admires the bold design and streamlined interface, plus the camera takes excellent pictures, with razor-sharp details, pleasing colors and impressive autofocus. But the boxy shape, lack of a camera strap (it can only fit a wrist strap), lack of a viewfinder, fixed screen and heavy lens makes the camera a pain to hold. Aura Frame Aspen Aura recently released the Aspen digital frame, which has a 12-inch HD, anti-glare screen with paper-textured milling around it. It's half an inch deep along the edge, making it the brand's thinnest frame yet. You can display the digital frame horizontally or vertically, and it has a 4:3 aspect ratio to match smartphone cameras. Its light sensor adjusts the screen's brightness as needed, as well as turns the frame off when your home's lights are off at night. You can upload an unlimited number of photos and videos to the frame via the Aura app. Additionally, Aura launched two software updates, which are available on all its devices, including those currently in homes. You can now add text captions to photos and videos through the brand's app, and search for specific people while selecting content to upload. Beauty and wellness launches R+Co Bleu Air Dry/Blow Dry Crème R+Co Bleu (a capsule collection from R+Co) recently released this multitasking styling cream for air- or blow-dried hair. It makes air-dried hair softer, more manageable and improves texture, , according to the brand. On blow-dried hair, it adds bounce and helps create smooth, sleek and frizz -free styles. Regardless of when you use it, the lightweight cream, which doubles as a heat protectant, will help reduce breakage and protect hair up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit, according to R+Co Bleu. Supergoop 's Play sunscreens are some of our favorite family-friendly options, and now the brand has a stick version and a hydrating face lotion, both of which have SPF 50 to protect the skin from UVB rays. The latter is a lightweight, non-irritating, sweat- and water-resistant lotion suitable for all skin types and tones since it doesn't clog pores or leave a white cast/residue behind, according to the brand. Its formula has glycerin and sunflower extract to support the skin barrier while simultaneously hydrating, conditioning and protecting the skin. This lightweight tinted moisturizer, available in 16 shades, hydrates the skin and gives light coverage that evens out your skin tone and reduces redness, according to the brand. Reviewers say it's as moisturizing as non-tinted facial creams, is great at blending into their skin and love that it's not cakey, heavy or oily after wearing it all day. Kérastase expanded its lineup with this four-piece collection that includes a shampoo, conditioner, smoothing leave-in spray and a hair oil. Each item has the brand's Hydra-Glazing technology (a combination of wild rose oil, hyaluronic acid and glycolic acid), which targets the hair cuticles by plumping, hydrating and tightening them for a sleek, shiny, frizz-free finish. This essence uses three molecular sizes of hyaluronic acid to hydrate the skin, zinc PCA and natural sugars to retain moisture and sakura flowers to help firm, protect and improve skin texture, according to the brand. Reviewers say this instantly absorbs into the skin and is gentle enough that it doesn't irritate their sensitive skin or trigger any acne breakouts. Apply a small amount of this sculpting serum twice daily to your face and neck to tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines, while also improving the skin's elasticity, according to the brand. This is possible because the gel serum has peptides and lactic acid to target sagging skin and horizontal neck lines from tech neck, according to Alpyn. Supply The Single Edge Max Supply designed The Single Edge Max for those who are new to shaving with a safety razor. It has a magnetic pivoting head that automatically adjusts to the contours of your face, giving you a close shave while minimizing the potential for nicks and razor burns, according to the brand. The razor has a durable, lightweight design with a sleek glossy finish. It comes with a wall mount, a reload cartridge and eight blades. You can buy additional replacement blades separately. Travel launches Calpak Baby Collection Calpak expanded its Baby Collection with two new products: the Baby Weekender Duffel and the Baby Crossbody Bag. Both are made from recycled, water-resistant materials. Calpak Baby Weekender Duffel The Baby Weekender Duffel is an overnight bag that doubles as a hospital bag. It has a roomy main compartment, an internal organization system, exterior pockets and a separate shoe compartment. The duffel is also made with a luggage sleeve and a removable, adjustable shoulder strap. Calpak Baby Crossbody Bag The Baby Crossbody Bag is a mini diaper bag. It has exterior and internal pockets, including one for baby wipes. The crossbody bag also has D-rings so you can attach it to a stroller, and an adjustable shoulder strap. Béis The Getaway Collection Béis is introducing new colorways, luggage and accessories with their summer capsule. The Getaway Collection is a line of sleek and timeless classics for convenient summer packing and travel. The products in the collection are available in black as well as new colors including Flame (an orange-red shade) and Camel (a neutral tan-brown shade). The collection also includes a travel tote, a mesh beach bag , a garment duffle bag and classics such as the rolling suitcases. Smaller items include a new makeup brush and AirTag pouches, a travel crossbody, cosmetic pouches and a mirror charm. The Evolution X is Cabeau's most supportive travel pillow yet, according to the brand. It's built to prevent your head from tilting more than 10 degrees in any direction, keeping it stable so you sleep comfortably and don't wake up with pain. The pillow has an adjustable neck strap and front closure, and you can shift the top and bottom lobes outward to customize their heights. The Evolution X is made with anti-microbial fabric and it has a machine-washable cover. Home launches Swiffer Sweep + Mop Deluxe Swiffer completely overhauled its wet and dry mop for the first time in over 25 years. It now has a collapsible pole, letting you shrink it down to half its original size when it's not in use. The pole is also more durable compared to the original mop's, according to the brand. Swiffer redesigned its wet and dry mop pads to more effectivelymorework more effectively pick up debris like pet hair, too. Pura Mini Many members of the NBC Select staff swear by Pura's plug-in scent diffuser, and the brand now sells a mini version for smaller spaces like bathrooms, entryways and home offices. You can insert any of Pura's compatible scent vials into the Mini, which lasts for up to four weeks if you use it for about 8 hours a day, according to the brand. The device connects to the Pura app, which lets you adjust settings, including fragrance intensity, schedules and timers. Tulip Kids Tulip is one of the best boob light covers available, and the brand's new collection is designed with kids in mind. It includes nine light shades, and you can choose from six colors and patterns, as well as the brand's Gem and Drum styles. Two patterns, Drum Stebbins and Gem Stebbins, were created in collaboration with New York artist Pauline de Roussy de Sales. Like all of Tulip's shades, you install those a part of the kids collection over existing light fixtures by adhering them to the ceiling using the included sticky strips. Kitchen launches Caraway recently launched stackable storage containers to help you organize your pantry or refrigerator while keeping food fresh. They're made from non-toxic, dishwasher-safe borosilicate glass and have air-tight seals you activate by pushing a lever down on the lids. The containers, which come in small, medium and large sizes, are sold individually, as well as sets with organizers, a metal scoop and a measuring cup. 'Because these containers look so nice in my kitchen, I'm more inclined to actually tidy up my pantry and pour random bags of chocolate chips, pretzels, flour and chips into them,' says Malin, who received a courtesy sample from the brand. 'I love the locking mechanism on the lid, which totally prevents air and moisture from getting to food. I never worry about anything getting stale or losing flavor.' Coleman Pro Coolers These coolers are Coleman's most durable options — you don't have to worry about beating them up while traveling, camping, tailgating or bringing them to the beach. They have oversized rubber wheels that glide smoothly across rough terrain, sturdy steel latches, oversized drainage holes, non-slip feet and tie down slots. The coolers' thick, insulated walls, lid and gasket can keep ice cold for up to five days, according to the brand. The hard coolers, which are strong enough for you to sit on, are available in three sizes (25, 45 and 55 quarts), and the soft coolers in two sizes (16 and 24 cans). Oddbird's latest nonalcoholic wine is an orange variety made from organic grapes that are gently pressed for over a week, which lets their skins soften to give the beverage a golden hue and silky, smooth, round flavor. Then, the wine is aged for 12 months before it gets to customers. It has notes of orange peel, fresh fruits, herbs and spices. Oddbird recommends pairing it with foods like sheep's milk and blue cheese, as well as grilled meat and vegetables. Figlia Sole Figlia makes one of the best nonalcoholic spirits, and this month, the brand debuted Sole, its first new aperitivo flavor since it launched in 2021. Sole is a blend of lemon, peach, black tea and botanical extracts like elderflower, basil and peppercorn, giving it a bright, crisp flavor. 'Figlia's Sole aperitivo is exactly what I want to sip during the warm months with a splash of seltzer,' says Malin, who received a courtesy sample from the brand. 'It's so refreshing, and the color is a beautiful golden color that makes it even more appetizing.' Smash Kitchen Smash Kitchen is a new condiment brand co-founded by actor Glen Powell. It currently sells staples like ketchup, yellow mustard, mayo and BBQ sauce, all of which are made from organic ingredients. In addition to classic flavors of each condiment, you can buy flavors like Hot Honey Ketchup, Spicy Mayo, Dijon Mustard and Hot Honey BBQ Sauce. You can currently shop the sauces and dips at Walmart, and it's expanding into additional retailers soon. Why trust NBC Select? Italian Sustainable Shoe Company ACBC Sells Majority Stake to Swiss Fund
Italian sustainable shoe brand and consultancy ACBC — known for its modular sneakers engineered with a zipper system that ties together the sole to several variants of the upper part — has found an investor. The company said Thursday that it has sold a majority stake to Gyrus Capital, a European investment firm operating in the healthcare and sustainability sectors. More from Footwear News EXCLUSIVE: Autry Opens First Flagship Store in London's Soho Hoka Drops Clifton 10 With Updated Design, Features Financial details of the deal – expected to close in the second quarter of the year – were not disclosed. ACBC cofounders Gio Giacobbe and Edoardo Iannuzzi will remain on board as minority investors and in their executive roles of chief executive officer and chief innovation officer, respectively. A Circular Science Company and B Corp enterprise, since 2020 and 2021, respectively, ACBC had carved a three-pronged business model in the years since its founding in 2018. In 2023, the most recent financial figures available, ACBC's overall business generated sales of 15 million euros. Sustainability consultancy operations for fashion brands represented about 50 percent of yearly sales, the Made in ACBC third-party manufacturing business amounted to 45 percent of revenues, while the remainder was generated by the owned shoe brand's operations. It is understood that the latter division is to be wound down, although the company did not elaborate further when asked about it. Signaling an acceleration in its sustainability consultancy business, last year ACBC linked with RTG Consulting Group on a strategic partnership to set up operations in Asia, providing the clients of the Singapore-, Shanghai- and Paris-based firm with eco-leaning advisory. 'ACBC is a clear industry leader, combining visionary leadership, deep technical expertise, and a strong commitment to transformation,' said Raffaele Magliocca, principal at Gyrus Capital. 'We are excited and proud to partner with such a driven and talented team, and we believe ACBC is uniquely positioned to shape the future of sustainable innovation and drive the circular transition across the fashion sector and beyond,' he offered. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, Gyrus Capital invests in businesses with a strong sustainability commitment through transactions in the 50 million to 500 million range. ACBC marks the firm's first investment in the fashion sector. 'This partnership with Gyrus Capital is a defining moment for ACBC,' said CEO Giacobbe. 'We are proud to join forces with a firm that shares our values and long-term vision. Their international experience and focus on people, services, and sustainability will be key in scaling our impact and accelerating the shift towards more responsible and forward-thinking fashion and lifestyle industries,' he offered. ACBC has evolved from a start-up relying on capital increases, including Kickstarter crowdfunding, to a self-sufficient business over the past four years. 'This new investment marks a pivotal milestone in ACBC's development, empowering the company to accelerate its growth trajectory through a combination of organic expansion and targeted acquisitions. The focus remains on diversifying the service offering and expanding in new markets, driving continuous innovation, and reinforcing ACBC's position as a global leader in sustainability,' the company said in a statement. The Best Hoka Shoes For Walking, Tested For Comfort And Support
Recently, I conducted an impromptu survey by asking friends and family about their favorite walking shoes. The brand that came up more than any other? Hoka. And so, I set out to find the very best Hoka shoes for walking that blend comfort, support and stability. Based on my findings, the Clifton 10 is the best shoe overall because it's lightweight and versatile. I also like the Bondi 9 for more cushioning, and the Anacapa Breeze Low if you prefer to walk on trails. Walk down the block or across town in comfort with the best Hoka shoes for walking. Known for its colorful, max-cushioned trainers, Hoka kicked off the chunky footwear movement over a decade ago, and while its catalog of shoes caters to running, hiking and even recovery, a lot of these styles are also easy to walk in. To properly evaluate Hoka's best-selling shoes, I compared specs like stack height and weight in addition to midsole support and cushioning, stability, traction and overall comfort. I also spoke with Caroline Bermel, head shoe tester and content marketing specialist at Fleet Feet for helpful buying advice. Here's how to shop for a pair that meets your needs. Hoka Weight (per pair): 19.6 ounces | Cushion: Plush | Stability: Neutral | Drop: 8 millimeters For years, the Clifton has served as my go-to running shoe because it's light, plush and versatile. But over time, I've started wearing it even when I'm walking—it's just that comfortable. The breathable upper is lightweight and perfectly snug to prevent overheating, but doesn't sacrifice durability. Padding around the ankle is soft and flexible to minimize rubbing. And while the Clifton has long been praised for its cushioning, it doesn't feel like you're sinking into the ground with each step. Rather, it's supportive and supple to absorb impact. Hoka considers the Clifton a neutral shoe, which means it isn't designed for stability, but it does contain the brand's Active Foot Frame technology that supports landings. If you need even more cushioning, you might consider the Bondi 9 and for a more responsive ride, the Mach 6 is also easy to wear. Hoka Weight (per pair): 21 ounces | Cushion: Plush | Stability: Neutral | Drop: 5 millimeters Think of the Bondi as the Clifton's bigger sibling. Technically, it weighs less than the Clifton 10, but more of its girth is found in the midsole, which increases the stack height. (By comparison, the Bondi 9 measures 42mm at the heel versus 38mm on the Clifton 10.) Hoka completes it with a breathable mesh upper, and the collar is soft to reduce friction. Active Foot Frame technology supports landings, and that's a welcome feature—a shoe this tall might otherwise feel unstable. Hoka devotees will know that the Bondi isn't the brand's cushiest shoe. That honor goes to the Skyward X—a model with a stack height of 46mm at the heel. If you try the Bondi and it's not cushioned enough, you've got options. But for most people who prefer more foam that doesn't muffle the walking experience, it's the way to go. If you're torn between this and the Clifton, read up on how they compare. Hoka Weight (per pair): 19.8 ounces | Cushion: Balanced | Stability: Stable | Drop: 5 millimeters If you overpronate (meaning your foot collapses inward as you step and puts strain on the muscles surrounding it) or suffer from flat feet, the Arahi 7 is designed to provide additional stability. Made with Hoka's 'J-Frame' technology, it features a firm strip of foam along the inside of the shoe that prevents inward rolling, but it won't overcorrect your gate. Instead, think of it as a gentle helping hand that keeps your foot upright and the surrounding muscles engaged. Beyond stability, the Arahi 7 is lighter than many other stability running shoes we've covered, but it's still fairly heavy at 9.9 ounces per shoe (men's). It probably won't be the style you reach for to get through speedy walks, but it's still comfortable thanks to balanced cushioning and a gusseted tongue. It's also a bit firmer than its predecessor (the Arahi 6) and other stability shoes like the Hoka Gaviota 5, so keep that in mind if you prefer more cushioning and flexibility. Otherwise, this is a great option if you're rebuilding your foundation due to overpronation or injury. Hoka Weight (per pair): 21.8 ounces | Cushion: Plush | Stability: Stable | Drop: 6 millimeters The Gaviota 5 is a stability shoe designed for longer walks or extended periods of time on your feet. Stiffer foam along the entire edge of the shoe keep you foot in place while softer foam in the middle maintains comfort. It's finished with a breathable upper, plush collar and MetaRocker—a design element that adds a slight curve to the base to help with heel-to-toe transitions as you walk. If you don't need a stability shoe, the Bondi or Clifton should meet your needs because they also come with added cushioning. And if you ultimately need less cushioning but want the stability and support, you can move down to the Arahi. Otherwise, this is a solid, balanced shoe that should meet your needs for long distances. Hoka Weight (per pair): 24.8 ounces | Cushion: Balanced | Stability: Neutral | Drop: 6 millimeters Most of Hoka's walking shoes are versatile enough to handle flat gravel roads, but if you need more grip, the Anacapa Breeze Low is a solid option. It features a layer of nubuck leather along the top for added durability, and receives a PFC-free DWR treatment to keep moisture at bay. But the star of the show is the outsole—it features 5mm lugs and Vibram MegaGrip rubber for best-in-class traction. That might be overkill if you're walking on a dirt path, but it really comes in handy around roots, rocks and wet obstacles. Keep in mind that what you gain in toughness, you lose in comfort. The shoe feels chunky and rigid, almost like a hiking shoe, so assess when and where you walk before deciding if it's worth sacrificing some of that support (it's also available in a low-top with Gore-Tex or a mid-top with a higher cuff.) Otherwise, the Clifton 10 should get the job done more often than not. Hoka Weight (per pair): 28 ounces | Cushion: Plush | Stability: Neutral | Drop: 6 millimeters On paper, the Bondi SR looks a lot like it's sibling, the Bondi 9, but unlike the classic Bondi, the SR adjusts key details to make it more suitable for the workplace. The upper, for example, is crafted with a water-resistant leather, and the collar has memory foam for long-lasting comfort. Underfoot, a slip-resistant rubber keeps you on your feet, and the tread pattern is designed to improve traction. Overall, this shoe is safe for kitchens, hospitals, warehouses and other workplace environments. The Bondi SR isn't as light as the Bondi 9, nor is it as breathable. And while you can technically exercise in it, it isn't a true athletic shoe. That said, it's a comfortable, durable style for professional use that keeps your feet happy, even if you're standing for hours at a time. The Forbes Vetted gear team consists of editors, writers and staffers who rely on everything from equipment to apparel to make the most of each day. Our footwear coverage includes not only Hoka walking shoes, but Hoka running shoes, workout shoes and even shoes for standing all day. We took many steps—both literally and figuratively—to find the best Hoka shoes for walking. Here's how we made our picks: At the heart of any good Hoka walking shoe is a cushioned midsole for long-term comfort, but the degree of cushioning varies from one shoe to the next. As Bermel notes, the right shoe "depends on the individual's preferences.' While it's difficult to gauge just how cushioned a shoe really is until you wear it, Hoka designates shoes as either responsive, balanced or plush based on the amount of cushioning they provide. Responsive cushioning uses firmer materials and foams to help your feet push off with efficiency; plush cushioning absorbs impact to create a forgiving ride; and balanced cushioning sits in the middle to deliver protective cushioning that maintains some responsiveness. If you prefer truly plush cushioning, consider the Bondi, Hoka's tried-and-true max-cushioned shoe. For balanced cushioning that supplies a best-of-both-worlds experience, models like the Clifton and Transport will better meet your needs. And if you're after responsive cushioning for faster walking, the Mach series and Mafate Speed 4 are great options, though both are a bit more aggressive. A walking shoe's stability refers to how it supports your foot through the gait cycle. While even neutral shoes contain some stability elements, true stability shoes are designed to address overpronation, which occurs when your foot rolls inward as you step. Not all walkers need a true stability shoe, but if you overpronate, it can really help. Again, Hoka classifies a shoe's stability as either neutral, moderate or stable. Neutral shoes feature a symmetrical bed of cushioning but don't add stability elements; stable shoes contain some form of intervention, like "J-Frame" or "H-frame" technology—forms of construction that prevent excessive inward rolling; and moderate shoes contain features that make the design inherently stable, like a wide base, to support neutral gaits. Understanding your natural gait can help you find a walking shoe that meets your needs. The Arahi, for example, improves stability because it contains a strip of foam along the medial side to prevent overpronation. Similarly, the Gaviota features 'H-Frame' technology that weaves firmer foam around the entire shoe. Other models, like the Clifton and Bondi, are neutral shoes, meaning they provide basic support via a symmetrical footbed. Most people use their walking shoes on hard, dry surfaces like concrete or asphalt, but that doesn't mean you should overlook traction. Again, Hoka makes different shoes for different purposes, so it's important to consider your needs. If you use your shoes to run errands, take the dog on a walk or travel, models like the Clifton, Bondi and Gaviota are great because they're made with a basic, durable rubber outsole for longevity and versatility. If you prefer to walk on local trails or dirt roads that require a bit more traction, consider the Anacapa Breeze Low or even the Speedgoat—both feature Vibram MegaGrip rubber to boost traction. And the Bondi SR has a true slip-resistant outsole, which is great for the workplace. Ultimately, the best Hoka walking shoe for you comes down to how you'll use it. A plump, squishy trainer like the Bondi isn't really suitable for trails, while the Anacapa Breeze Low isn't necessary for sunny sidewalks. Consider when and where you prefer to walk and narrow down your options from there.
