This gram panchayat was selected for the award for successfully implementing various green initiatives to reduce carbon emissions. According to the PDO, they took up the task of shifting to renewable energy sources for daily needs three years ago. "Ours is a small village with an annual revenue of Rs 12 lakh. Our population is 4,145," he said.
"Our work started with the installation of a solar rooftop on the panchayat building. Through this, we were able to bring down the monthly electricity bill from Rs 1,500 to Rs 600-700," he said. Currently, everything from the rain gauging centre to the fence, CCTV, internet, and post office in the village runs on solar power. Twenty solar high mast street lights and 190 solar lights have been installed to reduce electricity usage," he said.
"Our next goal is to power the hospital and anganwadi with solar energy," he said. The village also banned single-use plastic to keep the environment clean. Other green initiatives, like the plantation of 1 lakh saplings, garbage segregation at the source, and scientific waste disposal, have now made the gram panchayat eco-friendly, explained officials.
