Bicyclist severely injured in collision with pickup truck in Santa Rosa

A bicyclist was severely hurt after getting hit by a pickup truck in Santa Rosa Monday morning, authorities said. The collision happened at about 8:10 a.m. near the intersection of Sebastopol Road and Laurel Grove Circle in the southwestern part of the city. The Santa Rosa Police Department said in a social media post that dispatchers received a 911 call about the crash. Officers and other first responders arrived to find a woman down and needing immediate medical attention. She was taken to a trauma center for injuries that were described as life-threatening. The driver of the vehicle that hit the bicyclist, a gold Ford pickup truck, remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police said the driver did not display any symptoms of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and that speed did not appear to be a factor in the collision. Based on the driver's statements and those of a witness, police said the bicyclist entered a crosswalk at the intersection when she was struck, riding from the north side of Sebastopol Road to the south side. The pickup truck was headed west on Sebastopol Road at the time of the collision. The injured bicyclist is a 55-year-old Santa Rosa resident, while the driver of the pickup is a 59-year-old resident of Cloverdale. Westbound lanes of Sebastopol Road near the Laurel Grove Circle intersection were closed for several hours during the investigation. Anyone with information about the collision was encouraged to contact Officer J. Meteyer at jmeteyer@

Surrey home gutted by Monday night fire

A Surrey home was gutted by fire Monday night, displacing six people and sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. The blaze began around 9 p.m. in the 18000 block of 66A Avenue in Cloverdale. Video shows the multi-storey, single-family home ablaze, with heavy damage to the facade and roof. A white vehicle in the driveway is also in flames. Greg McRobbie, assistant chief of operations with the Surrey Fire Service, said the fire was centred around the garage and main living area, and then spread upward toward the second floor. He said there were no injuries and all five residents of the main-level home were evacuated. One person in the basement was also accounted for before firefighters entered the building, he said. George Mah, who lives next door to the affected home, told CBC News his family heard a loud explosion Monday night. "My daughters were up in the bedroom just behind me here, and they heard like a pop, glass shatter. And they looked out the window and they saw the flames coming up the garage," he said. "It was a very intense fire." McRobbie said the neighbouring homes suffered some damage, but it was "mostly exterior" and those residents were allowed to return Monday night. Mah said the side of their home has some fire damage, but he considers himself fortunate. "I feel more for the family, like we're fortunate that the fire didn't jump." Surrey police told CBC News Tuesday morning that fire officials had advised them the fire's origin could have been an electric vehicle in the driveway, but that investigators were still working to determine the cause. McRobbie said "everything was on fire" when crews arrived and that he didn't want to speculate on what started the blaze.

Long live the Middle Ages: Meet the Bay Area group that's been playing dress-up for 60 Years

CLOVERDALE — In a scenic meadow just beyond Cloverdale, California, lies a kingdom you won't find on any map. There's a king and queen, and thousands of loyal subjects — living like the Middle Ages never went out of style. "It's fun. I can't put it any other way. I love this, this is where so much of my free time goes into," said Marcus Powell-Ford. Monday through Friday, Powell-Ford is a 25-year-old biologist. But on weekends, he becomes Xavier Miguel Castillo de Guzman, Master of Defense for the Kingdom of the West. "Ultimately, the goal is to learn a little bit more about what it would have actually been like to live in that period," he said. Welcome to the Society for Creative Anachronism, or SCA for short — a global fellowship dedicated to reliving the Middle Ages, minus the plague and poor plumbing. From food prepared using medieval recipes to hand-stitched embroidery, nearly everything here predates the 1600s. But unlike, say, a Renaissance fair, you won't find anyone selling turkey legs or trinkets. It's more immersion than entertainment. The SCA, which started in 1966 in a Berkeley backyard, now spans more than 20 kingdoms and 50,000 participants worldwide. And if you meet their king, you don't have to bow, but it is recommended. The main event of the weekend: a fencing tournament — medieval style. Powell-Ford, fighting as Xavier Miguel Castillo de Guzman, advanced round after round. By day's end, he was named champion. "It is a big honor!" he said.

Perth man allegedly ordered teen an Uber before sexual assault

A man has been accused of ordering an Uber to bring a teenager he met on social media to his home and sexually assaulting him. Police allege the 30-year-old man from Cloverdale, in Perth's southeast, started a conversation with a boy he did not know on a social media platform. The man allegedly lured the boy to his home, sending a rideshare vehicle to pick him up and bring him to his address last month, police said. The boy's family contacted police when they realised he had gone, with officers launching an investigation and even liaising with international counterparts in an attempt to track down the boy and his alleged abuser. Police allege they found the teenager with the man a short distance from the man's home. The 30-year man was charged with sexually assaulting the teenager and was remanded in custody to appear in the Perth Magistrates Court on July 31. The Serious Offender Enforcement Squad reminded people about the potential dangers of meeting people online. A police spokesman said online child sexual abuse could happen very quickly, even at home, without parents or carers knowing. 'Young people often don't understand the danger or that what happened to them amounts to a serious criminal offence,' a spokesman said.
