More info King Charles affectionately refers to his wife, Queen Camilla, with a charming one-word nickname, which reportedly he inadvertently revealed during a recent engagement. While planting a tree with Sweden's King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, King Charles tenderly addressed his wife as "darling". Guiding Queen Camilla on where to place soil around the newly planted tree, His Majesty gently instructed: "On this side, darling, this side." The sweet moment gave the public a glimpse of the affectionate moniker he uses for her. It is well known that in their early romantic days, King Charles amusingly called Camilla 'Gladys', while she reciprocated with 'Fred'. These nicknames may have been inspired by characters on BBC Radio's The Goon Show. The Royal couple, alongside King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, came together at Windsor Castle's Home Park earlier this month to plant a Swedish oak tree, reports the Express. This special tree — a symbolic gesture from the Swedish monarch — commemorates the Coronation of The King and Queen, which took place at Westminster Abbey back in May 2023. The use of pet names, as demonstrated by the King, is said to highlight their significance in fostering intimacy within relationships. Charlotte Butt, Senior Marketing Manager from Coca-Cola Trademark, shared with Hello! Magazine that nicknames are more than just labels; they're a shorthand for shared history, inside jokes and personal connections. (Image: (Image: WPA POOL)) According to research by Coca-Cola, "darling," the term of endearment used by King Charles, is deemed old-fashioned, much like "sweetie" and "duck." However, the study highlighted that nicknames play an important role in personal relationships, with 42 per cent of people reporting they feel happy and loved when addressed by a nickname and one in ten feeling a sense of security. His Majesty himself isn't short of affectionate monikers. Notably, he's called 'Grandpa Wales' by Prince William and Princess Kate's children, while his sister, Princess Anne, fondly refers to him as 'old bean'. The latter was first revealed in a documentary covering the royal's 2023 Coronation, drawing a hearty laugh from King Charles, indicating his approval of the humorous label bestowed by his sister, The Princess Royal. Following King Charles's ascent to the throne, Princess Anne has been a crucial figure by his side, providing steadfast support. During the Coronation ceremony, she even assumed the historic role of Gold-Stick-in-Waiting to her brother – a ceremonial bodyguard position. Princess Anne has also become increasingly prominent in Royal duties following the King's cancer diagnosis which was revealed in 2024, taking on more engagements to assist Charles during this period.
