Colorado Rapids return with renewed optimism
The Colorado Rapids will hope to build on a promising season that ended prematurely in 2024. The big picture: The team earned a post-season berth in November but was quickly eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the LA Galaxy, who went on to win the MLS Cup. Why it matters: Despite the disappointing 2024 finish, the Rapids' play vastly improved over their lowly 2023 season. What we're watching: To advance in the league playoffs for the first time since 2016, the Rapids will need to build on last year's success, including ensuring its best players show up for its biggest games. Context: Midfielders Cole Bassett and Djordje Mihailovic lead Colorado's squad, and both recently said they're feeling recouped after injuries last season. Brazilian forward Rafael Navarro led the team with 15 goals last season, followed by Bassett and Mihailovic, who represented the U.S. in last year's Paris Olympics. Zoom out: Rapids goalkeeper Zack Steffen earned a shutout for the U.S. men's national team last month in a 3-0 exhibition game win over Costa Rica. The game marked Steffen's first start for the USMNT since 2022. The intrigue: In addition to the MLS, the Rapids will participate in two international competitions: the Concacaf Champions Cup and the Leagues Cup. The team opened its Concacaf Champions Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against LAFC on Tuesday. What they're saying: Second-year head coach Chris Armas said during a season preview press conference last month he wants his team to get a shot at "every single" trophy: "We want to be playing in those decisive games." Improving the team's defense is a top priority for Armas after Colorado conceded nearly as many goals as they scored last season in MLS play. What's next: The Rapids open the MLS regular season 6:30pm Saturday at St. Louis City SC.
