NASCAR star Alex Bowman suffers frightening crash during Michigan race: 'That hurt a lot'

NASCAR Cup Series star Alex Bowman took a hard hit on Sunday during the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The driver of No. 48 was driving behind Cole Custer and Daniel Suarez on Lap 67 when Custer got loose and hit both Suarez and Bowman. Suarez and Custer spun while Chase Briscoe got loose trying to move past the carnage in front of him. Austin Cindric was at the bottom of Custer and appeared to have avoided disaster. Bowman hit the wall head on hard and bounced back down the track. It took a brief moment, but Bowman was able to exit the vehicle under his own power. The red flag was waved and the race was briefly put on hold as emergency crews worked to clean up the wreck and make sure each driver involved got off the track. Bowman talked to Amazon Prime Video after he exited the infield care center. "Yeah, that hurt a lot. Probably top of the board on hits I've taken," he said. "Looks like the 41 got loose, or the 2 got into him or something. At that point, I was just along for the ride, I couldn't do anything. Just, 'Oh s---, this is about to hurt really bad.' "Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a really rough two months." The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished 36th last week in Nashville and will finish 36th at Michigan. He's finished outside the top 20 in four of the last five races. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.

Alex Bowman unhurt after massive hit that red flags Michigan Cup race

In the second stage of the NASCAR Cup race at Michigan, drivers were scrambling on a restart as they battled three and four-wide for position on track. Alex Bowman was deep in the pack, running 29th when his race came to sudden and violent end. Bowman was in the middle of a tense battle with a four-wide situation directly in front of him. Cole Custer got loose and shot up the track, spinning Daniel Suarez. At the same time, he hit Bowman as well. Bowman's No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports shot to the right, slamming the outside wall head-on in an impact that managed to left the rear tires off the ground. Advertisement Bowman was going about 150mph when the car slammed the wall. Pole-sitter Chase Briscoe was also collected, spinning at the exit of Turn 2. "That one was really f****** big," radioed Bowman as he put the window net down and climbed the car. It was a relief to see, as Bowman has been sidelined due to both a back injury and concussion in recent year. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," said Bowman after being released from the infield care center. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken and unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits. I hate that for the #48 team. Obviously, (sponsor) Ally is from here. Looks like the #41 [Custer] got loose or the #2 [Austin Cindric] got into him or something. At that point, just along for the ride. Couldn't really do anything except think about oh shit this is about to hurt really bad. Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a rough two months. Advertisement Suarez and Briscoe were able to continue, while both Custer and Bowman fell out of the race. This continues an unfortunate run of races for the No. 48 HMS Chevrolet, finishing 27th or worse in seven of the last nine races. The race was red-flagged on Lap 68 of 200 as Bowman's car came to rest in the middle of the track. The stoppage lasted about 13 minutes. Read Also: Who's next? Watch Alex Bowman's Massive Hit That Triggered a Red Flag in Michigan NASCAR Race, Driver OK

The NASCAR Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway was red-flag after a four-wide battle on a restart resulted in Alex Bowman's No. 48 Chevrolet taking a hard hit into the SAFER Barrier out of turn two. Bowman was running in 28th at the time. Bowman hit the barrier head-on, but luckily his car stayed down on impact. Chase Briscoe, Cole Custer, and Austin Cindric were also involved. The race was quickly red-flagged on lap 88 of 200 to ensure the safety team could reach Bowman and check on the driver; Bowman was okay after the impact. It lasted 13 minutes as the track crew cleaned up oil and debris from the track. "Yeah, that hurt a lot," Bowman told NASCAR on Prime after being released from the infield care center. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and unfortunately, I've taken a lot of hits. I hate that for the No. 48 team, obviously, Ally [Financial] is from here. Looks [Custer] got loose or [Cindric] got into him or something. At that point, just along for the ride. Couldn't really do anything except think about oh shit this is about to hurt really bad. Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a rough two months." Bowman entered this weekend about 40 points above the cutline, this DNF will serve as his eight finish in ten races with results outside of the top-20. The red flag led to a flurry of cautions as drivers gambled with fuel strategies before, ultimately, everyone came down pit row for gas on the fifth caution to set up a seven-lap shootout to the end of stage two. Alex Bowman on Michigan crash: 'That hurt a lot'

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Alex Bowman walked away after he suffered one of the hardest hits in his career when his car slammed the SAFER barrier head-on in Sunday's Cup race at Michigan International Speedway. Bowman was running outside the top 25 when Cole Custer and Austin Cindric made contact, sending Custer's car into Bowman's car. That contact turned Bowman and sent his car head-on into the SAFER barrier. Advertisement "That hurt a lot," Bowman told Prime's Kim Coon after exiting the infield care center. "That was probably top of the board on hits I've taken, and unfortunately I've had a lot of hits. So I hate that for the 48 team. Couldn't really do anything except think about 'Oh (expletive) this is about to hurt really bad.' Hate that. Hate that for our team. "It's been a rough two months. I mean, honesty, we were pretty decent (in practice), I was pretty optimistic to start today. We got super loose and just had a long pit stop trying to make an adjustment to make it better and never really got a chance to race again after that. "Confident that my guys would have gotten the car better, and we could have gotten back up through there, but unfortunately, when you get in the back like that, shit gets pretty crazy, and stuff like that happens." This marks the seventh time in the last nine races that Bowman has finished 25th or worse. He entered Sunday's race 12th in the points but will score only one point at Michigan with a 36th-place finish.

Alex Bowman hits wall at Michigan as his rough stretch continues in NASCAR Cup Series

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Alex Bowman hit a wall with the front end of his No. 48 Chevrolet as part of a multi-car crash in the NASCAR Cup Series race at Michigan on Sunday. Bowman got out of the car on his own and walked to an ambulance that transported him to the infield for an evaluation, which he passed. Advertisement 'That hurt a lot,' he said. 'I've taken a lot of hits.' Austin Cindric's No. 2 Ford made contact with Cole Custer's No. 41 Ford and Daniel Suarez's No. 99 Chevrolet, leading to Bowman colliding with the wall on lap 67 of the 200-lap race. Bowman, who drives for Hendrick Motorsports, came to Michigan 12th in points and will drop in the standings after this latest setback. He has finished 27th or worse in seven of his last nine starts and didn't finish for a third time during the rough stretch. Bowman was in the top 10 in five of the first six races this year, including a runner-up finish at Homestead-Miami in March. He earned his eighth career Cup Series victory last year at Chicago. ___ AP auto racing: Larry Lage, The Associated Press
